@@MaryCherryOfficial 0:06 well he is Bond, James Bond! ;D
@@MaryCherryOfficial Merry, did you know that the gambler with the big smile was Jack Nicholson too? He plays 2 different characters in this movie
Mary, please educate yourself. We have as many genders now as we always had - two. Either you're a man or a woman. There's nothing in between. Mental Illnesses are not genders.
That's Annette Bening not Nicole Kidman😝
That one line of Nicholson's gets me every time. "Tell the people they've still got two outta three branches of the government working for them, and that ain't bad!"😂
“Don’t run, we are your friends” haha
Fun fact: the reason the translation from machine didn't make sense was because it was a LITERAL translation, which in any language would sound funny. If you add synonyms and correct word placement, the actual translation is: "
"Martians, 800,000 years ago. We created the human hybrids. We fight for the right to control the cosmos. The power of the Martians, fighting under the dark swayed flag, will mow your people down like a harvest of wheat"
New lore unlocked lol. This makes so much sense!
I don't know if you picked up on it or not but the grandma in this is the actress that helped Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis in the afterlife of Beetlejuice
That's right. She's the "newly deceased" case worker.
"Stop calling me coach! HE survived!"
Slim Whitman’s Indian Love Call being the counter to the aliens is hilarious and it’s actually a great song if you can tolerate or like country music from back then
I love how unexpectedly silly it is. This amazing cast, which gets killed within minutes.
Verrrrrry unexpected
From the first time I saw him, Brosnan, I said he should be Bond. I watched him in a program called Remington Steele a long while back.
What a crazy silly movie, I remember seeing it on TV a lot back in the day, one of those things you watch because there’s nothing else on, seen it way too many times.
This coincidentally released around the same time as Independence Day
Ack Ack this I saw in theatres people loved it
6:31 Annette Bening
The film is actually inspired by a set of collectible cards from Topps Co. which were included in packs of bubble gum and many of the shots (such as the stampede of burning cattle) are reproductions of specific cards in the set.
Not to mention zapping the dog!
@@kpobuibo and the destruction of Big Ben and the Las Vegas saucers too
Wait, they were in packs of gum and not the other way around?
The original cards were MUCH more gruesome than even this movie shows.
@@emilmlodnicki3835 I had a lot of the originals ( as well as the Civil War series Topps did but they are long gone). I did pick up a complete reprint of the Mars Attacks series though.
Silvia Sidney, who played the grandma in this and the afterlife social worker in Beetlejuice, said that Tim Burton was the best director she had ever worked with. And she worked with Hitchcock.
She’s wonderful ❤
Hitchcock was a dope visionary but I remember reading he was a nightmare to work with.
She was Fantine in the 1952 Les Miserables. The one with B movie legend Cameron Mitchell as Marius. She really had a long and awesome career.
Yup! Sylvia Sidney started her career in the 1920s. She was a highly paid star in the 1930s! She worked on stage as well as screen fairly steadily for seven decades. "Mars Attacks!" was her last film role. She died in 1999, at the age of 88.
@@TSIRKLANDThere are some glamorous pictures of her in the 1930's that are very nice. I also didn't realize what a big, headliner, star she was for so many years. Here in this movie, I can't help but bust out laughing when she cracks up saying, "They blew up Congress!" Lol!
Aliens weren't based on any Tim Burton design, they came from Topps Trading Cards. I love this movie so much.
and VERY faithful to those gum card designs. How many movies go go way "off model"?
@@Redfern42 Just about all of them these days, it's all about the people making the film and not the actual subject.
Fun fact: the executive producers gave Tim Burton orders not to kill off Jack Nicholson’s character so Tim made a second character for Jack just so he could kill him twice.
"Don't tell me what to do, now I will kill him extra hard."
That is some serious spite and I am here for it.
That's Tim Burton for ya
@user-rl7mt4gh3oand most of the actors still living are still acting.
I've heard that originally Tom Jones was going to be killed off, but after meeting him, the filmmakers were like "we can't kill him".
The Martians first landing spot was an Easter egg. It was near Pahrump, Nevada, which was home to famous radio personality, Art Bell. He hosted the #1 late night show, Coast to Coast Am that talked about spooky stuff like aliens, UFOs, Area 51, bigfoot, ghosts and other tinfoil hat conspiracy type of things. It was very popular among truckers, security guards and anyone else that worked long boring overnight hours to 3am.
Mary: Watches "Mars Attacks"
Also Mary: Surprised when they attack.
This movie was a massive lost in box office, with only 100 million made worldwide. Critics were mixed between love and hate with just a 56% in Rotten Tomatoes. Maybe the problem was Independence Day that went out just few months before and some people accused Burton of exploiting the success of it.
For me it is genius. While Mars Attack is inspired in the 1962 trading cards with the same name, Burton wanted to make a tribute to old invasion movies as Plan 9 from Out Space (1959), Erath Vs the Flying Saucers (1956) or The War of the Worlds (1953) and other classics like Kubrick's Dr Strangelove (1964).
For the longest time I thought I fever dreamed this movie because when I would talk about it, nobody knew what I was talking about and when I would say all the stars who are in it, people would look at me like I was crazy and I could never remember the name so I’m glad to see it’s having a bit of a renaissance lol
Exactly, I still don't believe this was an actual movie I saw lmao.
Now Natalie Portman has three boyfriends you’ve seen:
- Anakin Skywalker
- Thor
- The Boy from Mars Attacks
Also, V in 'V for Vendetta', as well
Hahhaah yes!
The boy is played by Lucas Haas, who played his first role as a little Amish boy in the 1985 movie "Witness" by director Peter Weir. Harrison Ford played the leading role. A highly recommend movie btw.
@@chrisb.2178 I'll always remember him from the Black Parade music video 😂
@@seattlecryptid Almost forgot, that he was in this one too 😅👍
This was just a Silly movie with the best cast and everybody is so funny 🤣 the Aliens are hilarious too always loved this Iconic Classic!❤️
Jack Nicholson clearly had a great time doing this movie. Speaking of which, I highly urge you to check out his 3 Oscar-winning performances when you get the chance (Best Actor for ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (1975) and AS GOOD AS IT GETS (1997) and Best Supporting Actor for TERMS OF ENDEARMENT (1983)). Fun fact: all 3 of the movies that he won Oscars for also won Best Actress as well, and CUCKOO'S NEST and TERMS OF ENDEARMENT both won Best Picture as well.
I don't think anyone has reacted to Term of Endearment, which won the Best Picture Oscar. I think it's held up quite well.
you should look up at least one roger corman film he did, the raven. starring boris karloff, peter lorre, and vincent price. jack nicholson in tights.
The actress you mistook for Nichole Kidman is Annette Bening (she won two Golden Globes and was nominated for multiple Oscars). Probably most recognized for American Beauty.
Annette Bening played Mar-Vell/Wendy Lawson in the MCU's Captain Marvel.
She seems older than when she played that cheerleader.
Twice when Annette Benning was nominated for Best Actress, Hilary Swank won.
also love thora birch in american beauty
And the woman who managed to get notorious playboy Warren Beatty to finally settle down.
Haven't seen this since it was released, and completely forgot that Pam Grier played the bus driver!
Truly an all star cast.
Love Jim Browns character. It was so cool he survived the ultimate boxing match...
Fun fact: the hotel that gets destroyed is not a miniature, that's footage of its actual demolition. It was a Vegas landmark for decades, and Tim Burton was rather fond of it. So when he heard it was being demolished, he asked the wrecking company if he could put it in his movie. They agreed, and so, the demolition site was rigged with flashpots where the death rays hit the building, and so that the hotel would split in half when the implosion charges detonated. This was then spliced into the backdrop of burning Vegas.
Mary, was that a total "whoosh" on the "do the aliens have two sexes" joke? 🤣
Funny thing is, this film is based on a series of trading cards. Not even a comic book.
"They Blew Up Congress!" .... If Only!
Natalie Portman had the best lines in this movie. I like how Pierce Brosnan and Sarah Jessica Parker managed to get ahead in this movie.
Maybe, but then again it would seem Sarah Jessica Parker would be living a dog's life.
This cast is stacked! Not the greatest movie, though. I enjoy it for being a farce of classic science fiction films. Also, for a wonderful movie starring Jack Nicholson please give As Good As It Gets a chance. He won Best Actor at the Oscar’s that year for the role.
Agreed. I don't outright despise Mars Attacks, but there's no denying a lot of aspects are plain dumb to say the very least. Taking that into full consideration, I feel the cast did well enough. There are far worse things I've seen over the years that would rightfully be part of my personal list of most horrendous movies I've ever seen.
Strongly second the recommendations for As Good as it Gets.
I wonder if all the cast has a love for old black and white space invader movies. I could see that being the reason such a stacked cast would want to be in a mindless invader flick.
@@digidv85 isn't that the point?
Yes, As Good as it Gets is a forgotten movie unfortunately. But it is a great movie
I think I saw some drool from Mary every time Pierce Brosnan came on the screen...lol
This is probably my favorite Tim Burton movie because it's a lot of fun and lacks the self-indulgence that I tend to associate with a lot of his other films. The farcical take on 50's sci-fi features, the star-studded cast and the ridiculously over the top acting just make this one of the most fun science fiction comedies out there. I put it up with Galaxy Quest as far as being a surprise comedic hit with an unexpectedly high profile cast, both for people who were currently stars at the time of release and those who became bigger stars later on (in particular in this movie Jack Black and Natalie Portman).
such a classic
"They blew up congress!" LOL
Not a classic it just terrible

@@salbro5985 omg. Head on a stick. I’ll never forget. 😂

I like watching Mary’s reactions HOWEVER, she does say certain things. Certain things that reminds me that’s she very much from Australia lol
I’ll leave it at that
I know exactly what you mean 😎
I'm glad you enjoyed Mars Attacks. Classic sci-fi comedy. By the way, the Martians weren't negatively affected by all music - just one song. There is a scene at the casino where they are clearly enjoying Tom Jones' singing.
I think it’s actually anything by Slim Whitman.
@@stephenkehl7158 Good point!
It was a poke at Slim Whitman and his yodeling singing style. Whitman was really big in the 1980s, largely through direct sales via TV commercials.
no martians were harmed making this movie
Grandma is played by Sylvia Sydney. She was great in Hitchcock's films.
Tim Burton liked her. She was also in Beetlejuice!
@@minnesotajones261 yeah, she was Juno the case worker
Mars attacks, low key one of my favorite memories of all time was when I was younger, and I got to spend time with my big brother, watching and laughing at the weird noises the aliens made, that and watching Godzilla together
You can't stop Jim Brown. In a lot of people's minds (mine included), the greatest running back in NFL history. He turned to acting after his football life.
Heavyweight champion of the world!!!!💪NFL legend!🙏❤️ RIP.
You mentioned nothing (wars, aliens) ever seemed to happen in Australia in the movies, but there is a very serious version of the end of the world that involves Australia: On The Beach (1959). It’s a classic. Star-studded cast. Very dark, but an extraordinarily good movie. Peace.
Mad Max is in Australia though it's post apocalypse. Farscape was shot in Australia which I loved that show. It's in space so very few episodes actually are in Australian cities and beaches. Only like 8 episodes out of four seasons. It's kinda like Star Trek if the writers were on crack but has some pretty good serious moments as well as a lot of comedy.
That's a real "Downer" of a Movie .... But everyone should see it once!
Mad Max? Or is it supposed to place place somewhere else?
@@Moctop Yep. Mad Max takes place in Australia. Although, because it takes place after World War 3, the Mad Max movies concentrates on the survivors, not the war itself. So you could say it half counts.
Based on the novel by Neville Shute.
12:17 - no, that's still a thing, just some people denying basic biology and scientific method to make themselves feel better. Wish someone would explain to them that denying reality had never ended well for deniers.
Agreed
Don't forget the actress who played the grandma was in Beetlejuice.
This movie basically trolls the audience. It has an all-star cast, and then kills most of them off in intentionally stupid or anti-climatic ways. Danny DeVito gets really prominent above-the-title billing, only to play a character named Rude Gambler who's in two scenes.
One of my favorite Tim Burton movies! It's so much flippin' fun with an ENORMOUS cast made up of veterans alongside future big stars and of course those memorably insane Martians.
Great reaction as always, Mary 👍👍
Not a lot of RUclipsrs have reacted to this Tim Burton movie. So glad you decided to Mary ❤🍒
Gotta keep the business going. According to the list of her reactions, she has not seen any movie in existence.
This has so many actresses and actors that were popular at the time that weren't big names yet but you know who they are because of later in years but this is one hell of a troll movie The aliens are such trolls so funny so funny so evil and funny at the same time such an awesome movie❤
It took me a few times watching this movie to realize that I liked it as much as I do. I was completely bewildered by it the first time in the theater though.
Cool that you got to see it in the cinemas though :)
it traumatized me as a kid
"What the heck is this? This is cursed!"
I guess by this part of the film Mary had forgotten that Tim Burton was involved.
It was a really fun movie! It's very 1950s SciFi, and based on a series of collector cards that Tops made in the early 1960s. It features some of the best of Tim Burton's awesome stop motion, and the ensemble cast is a nod to disaster movies of the 1970s.
Yes, it has this 50's vibe. The martian spaceships look almost the same as those in the 1956 movie "Earth vs. Flying Saucers". Even some scenes, as the destruction of the obelisk and the Capitol, seem to be taken right from this movie
The general with the sunglasses was the smartest guy in the whole movie.
I am pretty sure, that he is a parody of General Schwarzkopf (easily recognizable by the audience in the late 90s). I don't think he was meant to be clever but over-aggressive. The other one, telling about making career by just standing around, was playing on General Powell.
One of Jenna Ortegas favorites. She wanted to be one of the brain aliens.😂
It's fun farce movie poking fun at Scifi alien films. A goofy good time.
Mars Attacks came out the same year as Independence Day. I'm convinced they are both basically the same movie. Only one KNOWS it's funny. 😏
They both obviously know they're funny.
Ira just that one is funny like Rick and Morty meets Dr. Strangelove meets War of the worlds. And the other is funny like Buffy meets avengers, but not as effectively.
Don't like this movie. The Martians are terrific creations but everything else in it stinks
I hadn't seen this movie since I was a kid, and I didn't remember there being so many celebrities in it. But it was a lot of fun to watch with you. :)
This was inspired/based on a set of bubble gum trading cards from 1962. It's on YT.
This was A Lot of Fun!!!
Mary: This doesn't make sense
Its not supposed to make sense. Its just silly movie. With so many Great Actors. So glad you liked it.
The music that ended up killing the aliens was the 1952 Slim Whitman yodeling version of "Indian Love Call," originally written in 1923.
The song is from an operetta, re-made in film format several times, about a Canadian mountie who falls in love with a young woman. He tells her the story, supposedly from Native American culture, how "Indian braves" would sing this song down the mountain valley to their beloved. The whole thing is really not P.C. in terms of its representation of Native American culture, but the song has held a certain popularity through the decades. Slim Whitman's country yodeling style must have been popular with enough people (including the lovely grandma in this film), but is also considered an assault on the senses by others (apparently including Tim Burton), and especially the Martian ne'er-do-wells who were out here causing all kinds of mischief. The sonic frequency of Slim's yodels must have played havoc with those extra-terrestrial noggins, with explosive results!
This is why we need to preserve this version of the song and start developing into sonic weaponry.
Much better than "Independence Day", and if you don't like that, ACK! ACK ACK! ACK ACK!
"it's NO2, it's how it could breath in our atmosphere"
We DO have Nitrogen and Oxygen in our atmosphere, that's a joke many people miss
Independence Day got released July of 1996. Mars Attacks got released December of 1996. Interesting timing, don’t you think?
Jack Black was also in the Jim Carrey movie the Cable Guy the same year
In the original Batman by Tim Burton with Jack Nicholson as The Joker, at the end, Joker says "Let me give you a hand" and offers his hand to Vicki Vale. When she grabs, it comes out of his jacket, a fake hand. Similar to the alien giving him a hand at the end of this movie.
Jack black was Hilarious in this. Even though he had a small roll🤣 love these reactions Mary💗
Australia, Mary? Have you not seen any Mad Max films - lol . . . As for the unexpected cast list - the same occurred in Galaxy Quest, too . . .
The movie is easy to understand when you understand everyone, on both sides, martians and humans, are a-holes. Except the grandmother, grandson, and president's daughter.
Unfortunately, this movie depicts politicians accurately today. Total morons. Lol
But it is a great satire movie.
As I recall, this film served as inspiration for a video game called "Destroy All Humans". I never got to play, but it looked fun. For a good Michael J. Fox film, I'll advise Peter Jackson's "The Frighteners".
If you liked this movie your LOVE playing the video game "Destroy All Humans"
The song that killed the Martians, "Indian Love Call", was sung by Slim Whitman, a country performer who started performing in 1948. He was known for yodeling. He had some success in the US before going to the UK and developing a large following. By the 1980s, however, he was a largely forgotten entertainer until a marketing company leased the rights to his Capitol Records songs and started promoting a collection of them on late night television. The ads ran incessantly after 11p.m. along side ads for Ron Popeil's Veg-O-Matic, Pocket Fisherman, Seal-A-Meal and Mr. Microphone. Slim Whitman's appearance was a vision in rhinestone-encrusted costumes and one of the world's cheesiest mustaches. He toured with Elvis Presley in the 1950s.
This movie is one of my favorite tongue-in-cheek comedies! I've always believed that Tim Burton made the move as a humorous homage to the 1950's sci-fi movies genre......most of which were made for teenage fun back in the day (that was my growing up time and coming of age). The movie is an amazing parody with hilarious performances by the all-star cast......and your reaction is awesome. I am a subscriber and I always enjoy watching all your reaction videos !
Yes, it has this 1950's vibe. The marsian spaceships even look almost the same as those in "Earth vs. Flying Saucers" from 1956
This freakin movie was traumatic for me as a little kid, but now I just can't stop laughing about everything 😂 Such a classic!
Same. I was at my grandparents house for a week in the summer. They had gone to bed and I was up late watching this. The death rays were just horrifying. But now I love this movie. ACK ACK!!!!
Okay Mary HAS to react to 'GoldenEye' now - peak Pierce Brosnan! 😄
The aliens in Mars Attacks! were actually based on artwork from a series of Topps trading cards released in 1962. That's why they have that hokey 50's B-movie look to them.
You should check out On the Beach. It may have been the first movie where Australia was okay. At least at first.
News flash for you millennials out there: There always has been and will always be two sexes.
👽👍 It's always fun watching you go "Oh, look how young (insert name of celebrity here) is" when you watch older movies. For this reason alone, you'd probably get a kick out of watching any movie with Kurt Russell in it from the 1960s or any movie with Jodie Foster in it from the 1970s. 😎👍
This is probably my favorite Burton flick. It's the only one I've seen that doesn't have his weird, gothic aesthetic smeared all over it that I don't care for. I haven't seen Big Fish yet, but I'll get to it.
Don't forget Tom Jones survived too!!!! lol
Slim Whitman and his yodeling was the real hero of that movie lol.
Jack Nicholas wanted to play like 10+ roles in this movie and tim Burton talked him down to two
Fun fact: the ammount of genders in humans has remained constant all trough history
We dont have 2 sexes anymore because the martians really won. Lol
Who else started doing "The Carlton" when Tom Jones appeared in this movie?😂
It is the song specifically and not music in general that kills them
gotta see Martin Short in Clifford..Martian Short..
2:43 burning horses 😂😂😂
This was a some kind of parody of Sci-Fi movies from 50s and 60s. The star power in this movie is just one of the many golden traits of this movie. Imagine in the future is Jack Nicholson actually runs for President
Yes, Mary. People do sleep on their backs
So do vampires 🧛♂️
I almost always fall asleep on my side and wake up on my back.
That's talent
I'm glad you immidiately considered they were lying from the start and not a translation error or the Dove. They were just trolls
My favorite part was the Godzilla cameo.
When I was younger I this was average; now I’d give it 4 stars…pretty good film 😅. The flying saucers are inspired by Ed Wood’s Plan 9 from Outerspace and also Earth vs the Flying Saucers 😅. Mary: react to 1994’s Ed Wood; guaranteed to please 😊
Congratulations on 200k 🎉
Thank you, man!

Might be my favourite Tim Burton movie - and I'll defend it to the hilt every time it comes up. So much fun. Sylvia Sidney was wonderful as Grandma, she's my favourite - it was her last role as well I believe. And Tom Jones standing outside that cave with an eagle landing on his arm - just perfection.
This movie for me is a classic, and is in my top 10 favorite movies. Ever. I agree, the story isn't much, it's literally about Mars attacking Earth lol, but it's just so ridiculous and over the top, for me in a lot of ways, it has similar vibes to tremors, the movie gives you everything it promises in pretty much the perfect way it can. This movie could have easily taken itself seriously and turned out similar to Independence day or something, but really stands apart, plus, holy crap what a stacked cast, and yeah Jack Pulled double duty playing Art Land. I love that the Martians are just little asshole trolls lol. " Don't run, we are your friends" gets me every time lol.
Check out the old game "Destroy All Humans".
I'm sure there is a political message behind this seemingly goofy looking movie!
F'n great movie. Shame they never made another . This is cult classic at its best. 1950s b sci fi grade fun. Great react, great video. Surprising how long its been since this came out . Wow.
Ok... This is one of my favorite movies because it's so bizarre and fun. I'm glad you reacted to it.
Have you ever seen Journey to the West. It's a bizarre and fun movie also. It's on par with Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer, but with demon hunting. I suggest you watch it if you haven't already
The aliens weakness to song and the singer was a call back to The Attack of Killer Tomatoes. Not a spoiler because I’m not exactly telling people exactly happens just saying it’s a call back.
