And unlike many extremists who believe that philosophy denies the truth of God, both religion and philosophy are taught in our schools. Since then, French and Russian have also been taught as secondary languages, with Arabic always being the first and foremost as it defines our heritage and unites the many ethnicities in our country..We have a shot at reviving our beautiful land and making it more developed than over..I trust that with help from Allah and through working together, Syria will propser and flourish once again..

Actually Damascus is quite safe, especially the regions within the Arab Syrian Army full control. But there are of course some kind of instability in the area as a whole. Economical problems ( high to extremely high prices). The lack of water and electricity during long periods of the day (depending on the district)... etc and such issues are common. *Source: My parents are living in Damascus.

I can't but shed tears watching this , i was in high school when the documentary was been made, I never wanted to leave my country but i was forced to, but even with that i guess we are the lucky few who made it, it's devastating to have the life stolen from you and i wouldn't wish upon anyone , please be kind to people and try to understand what they've been through, a little smile can make the all the difference.
I think it is remarkable that BBC have done such a documentary - it is worth so much especially now that the past years have changed everything. Having been to school in Syria as a child myself, I can honestly say that this is the most 'real life' documentary I have ever seen, it is true and it shows various facets of school & society at the time. Outsiders often have a 'black & white' sort of opinion of countries they don't know, and this is a real eye-opener, because nothing is just black or white. As you can see, yes it is mixed, you can see extremes to either side, but you can also see open-minded people and a great thirst for knowledge. I have experienced this first hand in 2009-2010 when I co-ordinated a German-Syrian exchange project for university students, with students from both sides visiting the other country. There has never been a greater movement towards opening to Western countries, especially in education & research, than what was happening in that time. It was slow, yes, and it was within the restrictions of the political system, but nonetheless it was happening and it was positive & moving forward. It is unbelievable that all this has been destroyed and set the country backwards to a level that is now worse than 20 years before. Thank you BBC, from the depth of my heart!
I love Syria and Syrians. I am not Syrian myself, I am from Saudi Arabia but we have so many Syrians living here and they are a prosperous community and have done so much. I just hope that things get better for the good, not only in Syria but in the entire Middle East. But dont worry the future is bright :)
It is a shame that BBC turned into a war propagating media outlet, that supported the destruction of your country with anti Assad, pro jihadist/terrorist propaganda.

Thank you Hannah it's motivating. Please try to convey the message that those who started radicalism and terror in our country are Qatar, Saudi and Turkey. These three countries are supported by USA, UK and Israel. A Small online search will confirm what I say. It's devastating that a country such as Saudi with the worst human rights record wants to start democracy in my country. I appreciate every word you may convey.
🙃when anything changed drastically without the pressure of government or with the government , you have to admit that ,they adopt what is very inner nature of human being . the culture you are refering perfect as taken by the west didn't come drastically it took hundred of years to reach to the naked beach.
According to the video title this was in 2011 so if the toxic and destructive arab spring bandwagon/fad hadn't started it was on the brink of doing so.
Yeah, after a decade of leading a modernizing movement, promoting Syrian cultural resources to the world and providing education and health care to everyone for free (including the 3 million refugees Syria had taken in), suddenly Bashar al Assad "became a dictator" just as jihadist nut jobs started murdering police and postal workers, burning libraries and government buildings and demanding the imposition of Sharia law with the slogan "Death to the Alawis, Send the Christians to Lebanon." Interesting coincidence. You wrote the above a year ago. Hopefully you've since then educated yourself better on the propaganda we in the West have been fed since the year after this documentary was filmed. Of course, the Syrian government had opposition All governments have opposition. But Syria was a beacon of modernity and inclusiveness in the region before Operation "Regime Change" went operational in March, 2011.
Mr Caesar islam is peaceful, in the quran its said if you kill one person that mean you kill 10 people. Why do u judging the religion with out you know anything about it. Frist go and read about islam and then come to talk. People who do all this problems are not muslim they just use the name if islam
@fatimar6558 same goes to you, read about what people actually criticize about islam before having a confident opinion about it just because you grew up with it peacefully

Tawfik bakro what about others??? You mention only terrorist and forget who made them and were did they came and how did they came?? who's the main responsible for that?? and that government was killing it's own people before 2 years and 7 months of establishing isis!!! That besides the government there were countries that help the government for doing that and there were countries who help isis, first one who helped isis and the main one is ass ad, that fake president who you guys talking about him like he's a god or something!!! He helped isis very will along with other countries for 5 years and now he's buying petrol from them and live a happy life by the protection of Russia and their allies, USA and their allies also help him and help isis and they use media to appear like they are enemies, because USA has a lot of advantages of this war so they keep it as long as they can... All thos politicals are the main responsible and the most one who start all these bullshit that what you worshipping him *ass ad* and yet you retarded worshipers of ass ad claims it terrorist group that have no heavy weapons nether planes to do such a things and with members that doesn't make more than 70 thousands of uneducated and weak to be the main artery of this problem??? For god sake are you talking from your heart or lying? For nothing or for your life?? Or you just a member of ass ad electronic and media armies?!?!?
I am from this beautiful, old city. It doesn’t sadden me to watch this. On the contrary, it makes me proud and happy because I believe in us Syrians. It is the oldest city in the world and has been through more and more wars and disasters throughout history but it is still alive. And will get back to life in the end and build new memories and history. I might not see that in my life but I know that one day this will happen. That alone makes me relieved ❤️
❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉💜💙🌹🎉🩵so beautifully said Yes Deema Your words have given me hope Your words shine with love joy faith ❤️ Such light enlightens not just Syria but the whole universe I am Palestinian Syrian I was there living in Daraa city but studied in Damascus university and now in Germany Your words carries to me the perfume and the light of Jasmin rose of Damascus of Daraa of Syria ❤🎉
Thank you SO MUCH for saving and posting this documentary. I can't wait to watch the other segments. It's amazing how radically Western media presentations of Syria changed after Operation Regime Change went operational the year after this was filmed.
Excellent, Dua'a!!! Your attitude and learning of the negative aspects you were suffering at your old school has done a turn for the best. I wish you great success in your life and endeavors.
Evan Salmon The city is not longer there. Neither are most of the children. It's a depressing truth, but it's likely there is nothing to left to track down.
The city is not destroyed, however the countryside and its suburbs are. If I have to guess I would say many of these people are now scattered indifferent countries
Ayham 003 No they are much likely in a neighbouring middle eastern country, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, Jordan and gulf countries whom all have a lot more than 95% of syrian emmigrants while all europe share 5% and want to cry
@@joeswift9452 Where are you from? We Arabs, at least in the Levant, believe that we are the people who have the most respect for each other's religions and beliefs. Whether you are a conservative Muslim or a Christian (we even have some Palestinian Jews in Palestine), we all respect each other's religions and beliefs. If there is a case of disrespect, then this is one individual and does not represent the entire society. If you want to look at countries and peoples that do not respect religions and beliefs, look to the West and take a good look at the laws of their governments.
will turn out to be not so much of a unity {syrians} ..... the one who killed 750 thousand syrians was also syrian and you know why ?because they were sunni "99%of the refugees are sunni"ruclips.net/video/XBQXuzCpwtk/видео.html. so cut me some slack. i am all for accepting other culture and faith but the doesnt mean deny ur own in the process .
Whenever I miss Damascus I go back to such pre-war-made documentaries, our youth were were such talented boys and girls full of life and laughter, now they are all depressed somewhere in the exile..
I see in this video a sense of closed-mindedness and rigidity from the principal herself. Human freedom does not stop at the Muslim girl and the way she chooses to present herself. The veiled girl is open-minded and accepting of others. How long must we continue to adopt the West's views on openness? The West understands nothing about religions and has no values to defend. I have witnessed their moral decay despite their progress during my time among them. It does not bother us to see someone different from us who has principles, faith, and beliefs.
How messed up is that. Little did they know, that year everything was going to change for the worst. And that kid had to go through hell again. Most of these kids are probably dead now.
I really had to comment this it touched my soul personally…. At 32:00 😥😥😥 I felt her so hard , the trauma she’s gaining publicly, the way he speaks to her I’ve suffered this my whole life you feel your not good enough despite of what you are good at .. I’m not doubting that you do not love his daughter. It’s just a generational circle and a way to lead your own children, but with irreversible mark in their personalities.
32:04 😅 Poor girl, got called fat in school by her dad😅, and tge headmistress' reaction... "Is it necessary to eat everything on the table?" Ohh, cracked me up.
I love how they spoke openly about their different opinions no insults all friends and classmates that have different opinions it doesn't cause you to hate each other. They both speak with conviction and love for one another not from hate and wanting to tear each other down😔it could've been such a diverse country and very developed in their own unique way it hurts to see 💔
If a woman truly wears a hijab for herself and her own religious beliefs, then I have no issue with it. But the problem is that many do not. As the sharia-schooled girl in the video showed, her arguments are that the hijab helps a woman avoid harassment. First of all, that's is factually false, as even in countries where women are fully covered, they still face harassment and usually on levels higher than in countries where women are free to wear what they want. But most importantly, the girl acknowledged that she wears the scarf for _others_ (i.e. men). She covers herself so that men have an easier time not harassing her. Well dear girl, that is a shitty shitty reason. If men can't stop harassing women without hijabs, then men should be treated. It is not the duty of women to cover themselves up to help men behave like normal human beings.
Afghan you're fucking lair. Many women who don't cover get raped because of their own actions. If we girks dress well then there's no way we would have raped . So the hijab is the best way to protect yourself and it was the orders of the one who create us who knows what's better for us and that's why he commanded us to wear the hijab . Dumb head .
I myself wear the hijaab and disagree with her. I personally wear it because God knows what is best for me and so I can show my Muslim identity through it, that was the purpose of it in the Qur'aan that Allah mentions right after ordering the believing women to draw their jilbaab. @Moon Light No way! Rape isn't anyone's fault except for the one who does it..am I supposed to wear a full burqa because this one guy finds hands attractive and rapes any girl he sees not fully covered? Sorry but please don't think this way.
Moon Light how come then that Syria has higher rape stats than secular atheist countries even with all their covering ? its the religion itself which is sickening and poisoning men from disrespecting women no matter if they cover or not...women are seen and written as below men or simply sex slaves in all your coran ...I could wear a short skirt in a secular country and feel safe but I would feel unsafe even to show my face in Syria , sick men would claim its my faulth for being beautiful and not covering my face
stop worship pagan democracy. why western man worship women high heel boots, ass and women strapon pegging their man and called them while pegging that who is whore? who is bitch now? and man reply : yes. is this really modern? happyness?. Isa/jesus (pease be upon him) was Muslim and prophet and mother marry was also Muslim & also wear hijab. why western women don't want to look like prophet mother marry? and listen to this lecture, don't believe western media about IS: yadi.sk/i/Y0LDQ_iS3TBCqV
first lastname LOL! So there's something as to "sound like a Syrian" I'm Syrian from Damascus (living in Germany, specifically in Bavaria since a year and a half now) and I condemn both Israel AND Hamas! Oh and I'm an atheist, so that doesn't "sound syrian" to you at all, right? Bullshit.
Mrs. Amal Hassan, the headmistress, is correct when she states that she wants women and girls to be free. This does not mean you are faithless. It means you are still muslim, but have the freedom to wear the hijab or not wear it. She is older and has experienced a vast amount of life and teachings, so she is very aware about freedom and women's rights. She is highly intelligent, well educated and very articulate. I would follow her example.
All the girls have freedom to wear it or not. That's why some and do and some don't in that school. She is not intelligent at all. She is trying to force this generation to become like hers, that's not progressive. She is brainwashing girls into her ideologies that she thinks is correct but are very incorrect.
@@hassankhokhar204 you're the reason countries like syria that where about to become fully working democracies with a stable society fall. You are backwards, incredibly misinformed and lack any sense of intelligence, but you refuse to think for a second that you might just be wrong. The mindset you have, is what keeps middle eastern countries in wars and poverty.
I feel sad for Sara, her father was so rude...how can he talk like this to her. I hope she will not pay much attention and accomplish her dreams in life. On Syria, I have visited it many times before the war and it was a really nice place...I hope it will return to its prewar state ...peace
I don't know much of jack shit about how things really are in syria right now. All i know is that i tutored one refugee who didn't talk much about it at all, so i didn't ask. I hope everyone in this video is alright.
For me the most significant segment is at 43m47s Here the first Lady faces the challenge of the call to prayer but continues her talk encouraging women to play a part in the commercial life of the country. She stresses the importance of technology especially computers. Most chillingly she correctly forecasts "Tomorrow will be too late"
Super documentary , its not just content its good spirit content , diversity in syria is so mooii , beautiful n colourful at the same time , terima kasih(thx) for share this content , greetings from jkrta
Sorry to tell you but this isn't the Palestinian flag, this is the Ba'th flag, it looks a lot like the Palestinian but the red arrow is smaller. Nevertheless most Syrian supports Palestinians and pray for them with all of their hearts.
in tunisia too we study philosophy and islamic studies in the same time...generally philosophy teachers are atheist leftist....we have a balanced educationwe have baccalaureat system like france and the exams are much harder than that in france .i had math branch baccalareat ..we studied math physics chemistry bioilogy philosophy and sports
I wish we can see of more like this in Syria and not just all the bombings. People deserves to live and all has a right to life. We're still praying that they can regain the way of living that they once have.

Syria is a secular country and was very modern even under one party regime ,I'm very sad for what happened to Syria because of the Wahhabi golf states ,,,secular Syria will be back like before and stronger ,,,from Algeria ,we are very sad for what happened to our Syrian friends because of Wahhabi terrorists .
First of all I have never heard of "golf states". If you are referring to Gulf countries, I would like to correct you. All Gulf countries are officially Sunni Muslims. Second, the reason behind what is happening in Syria is a mixture between a rotten government, citizens who simply cannot fellow rules, and some racist groups and countries who interfere in the events only to help citizens who share their beliefs, or for simply gaining control over the rich resources of Syria. Arabs should really stop blaming Gulf countries. As an Arabian citizen (who is not from the gulf) I believe that most Arabian countries are merely jealous from the Gulf because of their wealth and achievements. One last thing, I am sure that Syria will probably rise. However, it will never achieve anything with its one party regimen. Syria has (or had) enough oil money to make it as modern as Dubai. Nevertheless, that "Glorious Regimen" kept all the money for them selves.
Chaoui Russikada Sorry for the miscommunication, I have never meant to disrespect you, I thought you were using "golf" is some kind of sarcasm. Having lots of money does not mean being able to host refugees. Some official in Kuwait (I can't remember who it was) have honestly announced that they are only willing to give residency to people who could work. Plus, the only gulf country that could take refugees is Saudi Arabia (in terms of space). I'm talking sectarian? you're the one that started claiming that all gulf countries are Wahhabi! Also, could you please tell me why would gulf countries supply terrorists? I've been living in a gulf country in the past few years; and there was at least 10 donation campaigns to provide supplies for Syrians. Why are you so full of hate?
bhu nji Congratulations, you have just demonstrated how ignorant people comment immature comments. The original comment at least contained some information, your comment is purely *hate* *speech* (I am not Saudi, I don't even like Saudi Arabia)
well said! it's a shame what is currently happening in Syria. All over the world, people are starting to realize that Saudi Arabia , the US (and their western allies) and Israel are behind this conflict that has already killed so many people. They manipulate everyone for their own selfish interest: sickening! When will it stop? When are they going to let Syrian people live in peace like they had already been doing for so many years? When are they going to let the rest of the world live in peace without trying to create chaos? This got to stop otherwise we're heading to a 3rd world war.
Inshallah it will be back. I'm sure everyone in the video want the old Syria back. Allah is watching, my brother/sister. Do a dua and stay safe! There will come a time when Syria will be stronger then ever! Don't give up the hope! Greetings, your Iraqi brother living in The Netherlands.
Yusif was a refugee from Iraq to Syria.. but in Syria he has to face the same thing all over again. Would he have to return to Iraq again? Watching this in 2018 and God this breaks my heart. It’s been 7 years since the war started, when will Syria find peace again...?
kim taeyeon first off this is Damascus the one and only save City in Syria which hasn't been affected by War Yusuf probably moved back to Iraq since their war against Isis has recently ended and it is much more stable now

I just hope that things get better for the good, not only in Syria but in the entire Middle East. But dont worry the future is bright :)

so devastating to see how Syria has changed drastically... ..... my heart goes out for the Syrians and country itself.
Thank you Hannah it's motivating. Please try to convey the message that those who started radicalism and terror in our country are Qatar, Saudi and Turkey. These three countries are supported by USA, UK and Israel. A Small online search will confirm what I say. +Nabeela Williamson if I understand well : Bachar suddently became a dictator in 2011, but before he didn't seem to...
What happened?

Where are you from? We Arabs, at least in the Levant, believe that we are the people who have the most respect for each other's religions and beliefs. Whether you are a conservative Muslim or a Christian (we even have some Palestinian Jews in Palestine), we all respect each other's religions and beliefs.
If there is a case of disrespect, then this is one individual and does not represent the entire society. If you want to look at countries and peoples that do not respect religions and beliefs, look to the West and take a good look at the laws of their governments.

Amen!
Moon Light how come then that Syria has higher rape stats than secular atheist countries even with all their covering ? its the religion itself which is sickening and poisoning men from disrespecting women no matter if they cover or not...women are seen and written as below men or simply sex slaves in all your coran ...I could wear a short skirt in a secular country and feel safe but I would feel unsafe even to show my face in Syria , sick men would claim its my faulth for being beautiful and not covering my face
stop worship pagan democracy. why western man worship women high heel boots, ass and women strapon pegging their man and called them while pegging that who is whore? who is bitch now? and man reply : yes. is this really modern? happyness?.
Follow her example? Please. Become a muslim first, then talk about what muslim should and shouldn't be doing

Really enjoyed this when it first came out. I was so impressed with the country. I despair at what has happened ed to these people.

I watched this documentary when it was first released, it's incredibly sad to now think of all the awful things these people have gone through
48:15 that speech breaks my heart, because it give a clou on how Syria was and how it is now.
Poor Yusif, where is he now? Has he gone back to Iraq? Or joined the forces of refugees?
+chavandposh If I remember rightly in episode 5 he and his family are allowed to move to Canada.
+Lee Walsh where can i find that episode
+Alvz422 Hello, I've just uploaded the final episode. Enjoy.
+chavandposh stop please
ok at least good happened to him
Yusif was a refugee from Iraq to Syria.. but in Syria he has to face the same thing all over again. Would he have to return to Iraq again?
Watching this in 2018 and God this breaks my heart. It’s been 7 years since the war started, when will Syria find peace again...?
kim taeyeon first off this is Damascus the one and only save City in Syria which hasn't been affected by War
Yusuf probably moved back to Iraq since their war against Isis has recently ended and it is much more stable now
Ø G yeah I know lol. I’m Iraqi. And yes I know Damascus is (thank god) not largely affected but it’s still quite sad that people like Yusuf can’t escape this disaster
Coming back to this video after so many years ... to celebrate the fall of the Assad dynasty.
Celebrating Al Nusra taking over?

Amen I remember when I was a kid all Arabic cartoons broadcasted in my country were translated in Damascus what a shame .. I hope all Arabs will wake up and be united again and stop being divided and fight each other

37:42 Maalula is actually very nice and special town because it is one of the places were Aramaic is still spoken by Christians and even by Muslims, Maalula has a very small Aramean Muslim population, at least that was the case before the civil war.
It still does have that population! I saw a video about their marmarita holiday recently
The girls school was my school 🥺I know a lot of girls in the documentary , I loved my high school years 🥺
I am so sorry for that
it must be refreshing to have your school memories documented, wish mine was as well.
What happened to them? Are they still alive?
