I remember in kindergarten, the teacher every day at nap time would play music softly at her desk. I heard this song, and for years it played in my head. I didn't know the lyrics, other than the part where she sings "get closer". Finally, nearly 40 years later, I now know who does this song. I would hum it to people I knew. No one had any idea what song I was describing. I even called several radio stations. Nobody knew the song I was trying to find. I subscribed to YT music and by pure random luck, it played this song. No words could describe that moment. Finding this song opened a whole different world to me.

C'est sur qu'on était heureux, les rapports sociaux étaient simples, honnêtes et sincères. Il n'y avait pas toute cette technologie pour virtualiser notre amitié, tout était vrai, authentique car si je voulais voir un copain ou une amie, j'allais directement sonner à sa porte, pas de SMS ou d'autres conneries de ce genre. Una delle canzoni *** top *** del genere Italo Disco, brava Monica Stucchi aka Valerie Dore, non riusciro' mai ad esprimere a parole i ricordi che rievoca questa canzone, avevo circa 12 anni nel lontano 1984...le prime cottarelle con le ragazzine, gli anni in cui alle medie avevo incominciato a imparare l'inglese, le musicassette con artisti vari e nomi tipo Party Mix o Disco Mix che mia mamma mi comprava dalla bancarella del mercato, questa e' la musica dei MIEI anni e dei MIEI coetanei, che leggendo questo messaggio mi capiranno sicuramente. Tantissima nostalgia...gli anni adesso corrono un casino e ci lasciamo alle spalle tanti bellissimi ricordi...eh vabbe', almeno abbiamo RUclips quando vogliamo riviverli! ❤❤ ❤
A 55 anni se si e' nostalgici questa musica ti riempie il cuore di felicita' e rimpianti. A quel tempo non pensavo minimamente agli anni che sarebbero passati e mai piu' tornati. Al fatto straordinario che ero giovanissimo. E se il pensiero mi ha sfiorate qualche volta mi sembrava impossibile, lontanissimo anche solo divenire un trentenne. Oggi se potessi tornare ai miei 30 anni sarebbe un sogno .. Quanto e' strana la vita.

Ah, molto a misura d'uomo: sintetizzatori a palla, gente che non sapeva cantare, né ballare, né scrivere che diventava popstar. Cantanti come Giuni Russo o Mia Martini non le considerava nessuno. In politica ruberie, corruzione a non finire, debito pubblico esploso ... e c'è ancora chi ha il coraggio di dire che erano anni magnifici solo perché in quegli anni era giovane. I 40enni trovano eccezionali gli anni 90 e i 30enni gli anni 2000. Se siete nostalgici di questa merda, fatevi curare!

Pezzo fantastico che ho scoperto solo quest'anno nel periodo della quarantena per puro caso...
Tra l'atmosfera della canzone e la scenografia del programma Discoring(quando la Rai qualcosa di intelligente ancora lo faceva),ti sembra quasi di perdere il contatto con la realtà... Almeno parlando per chi è appassionato di questo genere come me,in ogni caso penso che fossero avanti di brutto all'epoca tra il sound nelle canzoni e la tecnologia che c'era in questi spettacoli.
concordo in pieno… pura poesia! Quella scenografia a neon e specchi era veramente fantastica, unita poi ad una tecnica di regia con inquadrature sfumate, luci colorate soffuse e gli abiti della cantante... rende il tutto unico 😍

Ci sembrava tutto nuovo e si aveva voglia di stupirsi. Poi musicalmente ci fu un'esplosione di successi . In pratica ogni settimana usciva qualcosa di sufficientemente bello che ancora oggi ascoltiamo con piacere

enorme, uno dei pezzi migliori di sempre, qualunque versione sia (7" \ 12" \ album version \ remix) , un brano ENORME !!! questa era la musica da ballare (ma anche solo da ascoltare) di quei fantastici e mitici anni '80. solo chi li ha vissuti può capirlo... :-) , con tutto il rispetto per quello che c'è in giro oggi in ambito 'dance\electro\etc', qui siamo su un altro livello.
Concordo in pieno gli anni 80 ma anche 90 sono stati magici

I was 13 when Valerie started regularly appearing on the TV screen...she always used to act like a kind of dreamy child dancing in its own world... and I was soooo in love with her and her sublime voice!
Its not actually her voice - well not here or in The Night anyway. This is sung by Dora Carofiglio, a famous Italian singer.

I mean, I'm just asking myself why the labels make fake singers go on stage while in truth someone else is doing the real job🤷🏻♂️? But unlike in the case of Milli Vanilli, where the case became a huge scandal after they won a Grammy and later they were revealed being fake singers, it seems that nobody bothered that Valerie Dore didn't sing there...
However, I became curious about Dora Carfioglio and found some videos of her group Novecento; when I heard "The Only One" I immediately recognised her signature voice and thought it sounds very similar to "Get Closer", this is really weird. But on the other hand great, at least I have something new to discover (there always have been lots of Italian singers I appreciate, like Alice, Franco Battiato, or Angelo Branduardi... and many others)!
@@maval4537 the tradition of replacing the real singers with models is one that actually originated with Frank farian. He did it with Boney M in the 70s. There were plenty of Italo disco projects that did this, among them:
- Radiorama, which featured two models, Antonella Ferri and Oscar Brandazzi, but actually featured several vocalists during its history, including Simona Zanini, Marco Bresciani, Elena Ferretti, Daniela Rando, and the two most well known are Clara Moroni and Mauro Farina (Farina also produced all the project’s tracks starting with Desire in 1985).
- Joe Yellow (which was fronted by Domenico Ricchini, who also produced all his tracks, but actually lip synced the voices of Alberto Favata, Elio Messina and Mauro Farina. He did however sing his first records in the early 80s and also sang one of the JY pieces, Recollection in 1985).
- Den Harrow (one of the most famous Italo disco projects, was fronted by Stefano Zandri, but actually had the voices of several singers, the most well known being American born Tom Hooker).
- Fun Fun (which featured the voices of Antonella Pepe and Angela Parisi, who were accompanied by Ivana Spagna (who you might know for tracks like Call Me or Easy Lady) in earlier recordings. The project went through several models during its history, the first being Francesca Merola and Natalia Rolla, then Rolla was replaced by Roberta Selvelli, who was replaced again, this time by Elena Trastulli who lasted for the rest of the project.
This was also frequently done with Eurobeat projects in the 90s and eurodance in the 90s too.

Few people in my age understand my interest of italo, especially when I was a teenager and hip-hop ruled all around. But finally - ITALO IS THE BEST. What else?
@@stefanp2311 Why are people stating their ages? I'm 35 and have been listening to this very song since i discovered it in about 2000. Never gets old. Age doesnt really matter when it come to italo disco, this song still sounds like it was made today.

It's funny, when this song came out, I was 17 years old. "The Night" before was a smash but "Get closer" was and is the real gem. Brilliant.

@@frankd.3035 I looked it up and your absolutely right. I didn't knew that. But for me it's only a little dissapointment. There also was another singer, named Simona Zanini, for this project. This fact was however never been showed on releases. Despite of that the project was very successful and it still gives me goosebumps.

I consider myself a big fan of all things 80s, even going as far as spending my whole childhood in them. But I never heard of this wonderful singer before. Great dramatic expressions. And a healthy swing in the hips. Hypnotizing.
