  • I made some hexagon shaped coasters that snap together using magnets! You can also use them as a trivet or a puzzle!
    HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
    amzn.to/1HbwL6k - Epoxy glue
    or
    amzn.to/1T20Bvk - CA glue (gel)
    amzn.to/1T20Ean - Table Saw
    amzn.to/1HbwRe5 - Band Saw
    amzn.to/1T20O1A - Orbital Sander
    amzn.to/1Hbx3u7 - Spray lacquer
    www.harborfreig... - Rare earth magnets (3/8")
    amzn.to/1HbxtR5 - Compass
    amzn.to/1HbxHrm - Steel ruler

... yup i'm making a Settlers of Catan board using this. This is perfect.

  • @GetHandsDirty

Love the magnets and puzzle effect! I think there was no need to draw all the hexagons. You could have drawn the first one, cut two opposite sides like you did and then put a stop block on the miter sled fence go get perfectly equal sized cuts on all sides and pieces. Anyway, we could always make things differently, couldn't we? :) Great great stuff and thanks for making me think about things!!

  • @BLTspace

Brilliant, I especially love that you could put a hot pot on them as well, like you said. No issue leaving this on your table all day/every day. Even if they get scarred with little burn spots it would just add character and make them even cooler. Well done Bob!

Made this same project at home after watching. My solution to the problems you had..
    1) Stacked, glued, and clamped the initial 5 in. sqaures
    2) Marked the hexagon on top, cut with band saw. This ensured EXACTLY the same shape.
    3) Flipped the stack on its side, made a stop block on the side of my band saw at ~0.5 in. This ensured exact thickness.

I’ve never seen them be done that way! That is so cool, Bob! I’m a math major and have found that when using the radius of a circle as the leg length in a hexagon, you get a value equal to 2pi•r, rather than 6r.

  • @jchunick

If you drill a bit deeper and use a magnet that is smaller than the hole so that it can flip freely within the hole, and use a thin plug to plug the hole, then you don't need to worry about the polarity of the magnets as they'll flip to the right orientation when coming within the field of another magnet. It's something I've done with some 2"x2" Dwarven Forge game tiles. With this technique you will get rattling since the magnets are free to move around. As well, you do need to get the N52 neodymium (rare earth) magnets - the strongest rated ones - since distance does affect the strength (ie. the thickness of two plugs of wood).

Fun project! I wonder if custom made stop-block(s), that were shaped to accept workpiece as the sides of the hexagon were cut down, would help improve the precision. If this is possible, it wouldn't require each cut to follow a manually drawn line.

    • @Iliketomakestuff

ze'ev Katz Yeah, I could, but the laser would have smaller precision and gives a slight burning effect which would darken the engraved area slightly. Either would work though.
