You might know Ms. Rae from her more popular songs like “Touch Me (All Night Long)” and “Over Like a Fat Rat”, but I dug a big deeper in the crates for this one. I can remember a free block party that WRKS 98.7 “Kiss” FM sponsored when I was maybe 14 or 15 years old right on 116th & Pleasant Ave (East Harlem, NYC) in front of Benjamin Franklin HS (Manhattan Center)- the school I was attending (and the same one Colonel Abrams once attended). They set up a stage, I can’t remember who the DJ was but there were live performances by Fonda Rae and D-Train (“Keep On”). You could hear the music from my window, I ran across the street from my house (1199 Apartments) through Jefferson Park and stumbled across a dope party. Fonda Rae was on stage with tight black leather pants on, singing this song (“Heobah”) and she was smokin’ hot!!! I will never forget it, I totally had a crush on her after that. The show was so amazing- just imagine your favorite radio station bringing a bunch of hot artists to perform (for free) right across the street from your house. There were no barriers, just a stage in the middle of the street, people dancing, free hot dogs and barbecue- it was like a family picnic. I was right in front of the stage, a young club head in the making. And oh, D-Train rocked it too- no gimmicks, no costumes, shirt all out of his pants, sweating like dog- that’s the real-est.

I grew up in NYC as well, the boogie down. I remember when there were Jams many summer weekends! Big plays were Aint ni Stoppin us Now, Joy and Pain, Shame, Square Biz, (too many to point to at 5am) well as Cats who came outta our hood like Sponnin Gee, Grand Master Flash and the Furious 5, etc.

Remember When Fonda Rae came to Brooklyn, in '83. She had a concert in Borinquen Houses. We went wild over Fat Rat. But when she dropped this, the crowd started noddin' they heads!

Listening to Fonda Rae's "Heobah" after I'm-ashamed-to-say-how-many-years takes me back to one of the best summer barbecues that we ever had. I'll always love her diva-ness but more than that: her sweet, funky-husky, powerful vocals! He-o-bah / AaaYAH!

Thank God I lived in the disco era. Now watching boring Netflix and a mentally ill president destroying the country. Time machine please!!!!
