    Thanks for this, I keep getting asked about being overqualified, but I'll try the augmenting the role for someone with my experience and qualifictions.

    I’m in this situation right now. I’ve all my interviews and the Recruiter told me today that they are worried that I’m over qualified for the position and I won’t be happy with my development. It’s a little frustration because I really want this position and to work for the company. Although I might have a lot of experience, this company would be in a new industry for me so I will have soooo much to learn that I’m so excited about.

    I have also seen the opposite, people who were not qualified for the position, but the company ended up offering them a junior position, created specifically for them. I know this situation depends a lot on the local "hiring culture", but the overall idea, I think is DO NOT GIVE UP.

    My situation: I got interviewed by an office manager seeking for a part time assistant for herself, as she couldn't keep up with her duties. Then she said I am overqualified as I turned to be indeed more qualified than herself. So I turned to be a real risk for her own position there. And in that situation asking to augment the position for my wonderful qualifications wouldn't be a good idea:) But saying why do I like the job and how passionate am I about the daily tasks - why not, I think that would still OK...

    I was cut off by the interviewer so he can say, “you’re overqualified for this role” so I talked about growing in the company and what attracted me to the role... he basically left it up to me to decide whether I want a face to face interview...

    I’m a former investigator (federal), have several degrees including a PhD, was a soldier (3 tours, retired), former professional athlete - I have an incredible resume and CV. I have always been overqualified for positions I’ve held and now cannot find ANYTHING. Over 1500 federal applications and NOTHING. I’m literally at my end here. What do I need to do? Am I on a list or something? There are no negative characterizations in any of my federal 201 files or SF250s. This has been nuts and I’ve been dealing with it for years.

    • @nvrselout3678
      @nvrselout3678 4 года назад

      Hmm yeah - I’m guessing you are on the over the age if 50 black list. This disqualifies you for most jobs. Try dumbing down your CV and remove any obvious age identifiers. Also bear in mind that when a job description says at least x years, it really means at most x years so cut off your CV at that point.

    I have been job hunting for 6 months and I am constantly getting you are too overqualified for the lower position and not qualified enough for the higher position. I am banging my head against the wall bc I hear this constantly from hiring managers, internal and external recruiters. I have had over 60 interviews and always ask the interviewer if they have any questions or concerns about me moving to the next stage of the interview process, the issue of qualification never even comes up. When I ask for feedback after the rejection email, There response is too over or under qualified for the position.

    • @iamthegame09

      Whatever is making you "overqualified" remove that from your CV...apply for the lower position and odds are you'll get it...it's really no longer about "pursuing your passion" but more like "paying the bills"...#sadbuttrue

    ...this is great advice and I'm in this EXACT situation right now. In fact, after applying to a position where I KNEW I'd be among if not THE top candidate (at least based on experience, skills, etc) & receiving a quick boiler-plate rejection email shortly thereafter..... I went thru some backchannels & managed to get back onto the consideration list. Problem IS that during the initial screen call, I could tell the HR/Recruiter was miffed that her rejection of me was effectively 'challenged' by the hiring mgr due to my persistence & she went into the whole 'overqualified' - salary a bit high - more of an entry level role spiel. So I'm prepping a note to the hiring mgr using the tips presented here - and I'll add that I DID find a current employee in another mkt who already DOES have what I would describe as an 'augmented role' title..... worth a shot - thanks!

  • @ShenState
    @ShenState 10 дней назад

    Overqualified can mean many things. Your background might have credentials that have nothing to do with the role. A lot of times when someone is overqualified it means that something happened which didn't allow their prior path to work out, and it might hint at something "defective" with them. Another possibility is that this person is just looking for anything to make money, but will jump ship as soon as the opportunity comes along that they are REALLY looking for. I never understood the overqualified statement until I became an owner of a restaurant.

    That’s my situation now😊 I have applied for a team leader position but received a call that I was overqualified then now they are going to interview me for an Operations Manager position. I was very honest and said never been a manager before but the lady over the phone she was “ your previous roles have 90% of what we need for an operations Manager here. I was like Okay that’s fine. My interview is next week. I have about 3 interviews next.
    I kinda understand like it depends on the size of the company. In some companies you might be just a leader but if you take that team leader experience somewhere else you might end up being a manager because of the responsibilities you had in that team leader position.

    Wow. The 2nd question is a a bold step! I was wondering if this question can be asked in person at the next meeting, or if I should email him right away, like you have mentioned in the video. Would that put me at risk of loosing the opportunity? Specially if the employer has already said that there is not much opportunity for growth. Please Andrew, let me know. Tks

    I have no Bachelors degree. More like 80% of an A.A.S but after getting a job I received the whole you're over qualified stuff. And the owner of the company was threatened by my intelligence. So I decided to leave that company 2 years ago. It's really hard when you're intelligent because you don't want to intimidate your superiors. And it's crazy I don't talk very much at work either so definitely not a show-off.

    Comeback: "I'd be happy to take your job if you'd like"
    Personally I see the "overqualified" bit to be an excuse and its the dumbest idea on earth. So what if I'm overqualified, you don't have to tell me that, you could just hire me, pay me the same as everyone else, and pretend like I'm not more experienced than everyone else.
    Do you want workers who know wtf they are doing or ppl who are gonna cost you & the company more money just to train?
    It's pointless. It's stupid. And about the dumbest excuse for "i dont wanna hire you cause I like going bankrupt".

      the job went to a guy who doesn't know how to open Internet Explorer and type a search term into Google / Bing

      and 99% of the job is to be on the Internet and communicate with customers and service users

I followed all the your suggestions about getting the job benefits and info from them before making an ask then asked them to make me a fair offer. They did and I came back with what I would like based on my contribution, they then came back and asked me the lowest I could go so I dropped salary 5k. If a small company says an applicant is “over qualified” after receiving an interview… please take that as a red flag.
    My translation, It means the company is cash strapped or limited in hiring for trial and error employee. -- realistically, employers can’t predict all futures so they Gamble … and therefore small companies tend to miss out on the talent actually needed to grow long term. Mainly because they can’t afford (or rather not pay
    ) a years salary and unemployment insurance for the “gamble”
    I believe partly, the hiring manager wants an employee they feel can be “managed” and taken advantage of vs an employee that’s extremely critical to management style due to being overqualified for role.
    It’s Good old fashioned job fear -
    The hiring Managers usually display insecurity by hiding behind the overqualified reason for not hiring.
    Not everyone job hunting is out trying to take a managers job from them. Sometimes people really want to work in the role available and that’s it.
    The overqualified approach causes companies to lose and diminish on many layers… not just company reputation alone.
    My opinion.

    May I ask what if one do if someone have a master degree but still unemployed for that particular working sector, but he cannot turn back to the starting point because he has already overqualified and job skills mismatch for another field's starting position. What should he do?

    • @iamthegame09

      What he needs to in that situation is remove his master's degree from his CV....I did it and I got a job offer...go with your most basic qualification and I promise you he WILL get job offers!...
