  • I work with an organization that treats coyotes in my area that have mange. Behind my backyard is a canyon where many coyotes live. My backyard and the canyon are separated by a metal rail fence. There are cameras placed at the bottom rails, pointing towards the canyon, to monitor both healthy and ill coyotes. There is a pathway/trail directly behind and parallel to the fence.
During the first week of video monitoring, we saw Front Paw and her pack walking on the trail. Her pack consists of about 5 or 6 coyotes. We named her “Front Paw” because her right front paw is injured so she only uses one front paw and her two rear legs to walk.
She and her pack show up only during nighttime. I’ve never seen them during the daytime. Based on our observations of her behavior and how she interacts with the other coyotes in her pack, we have determined she is the female alpha in this pack. She has adapted well from her front paw injury and is still an expert hunter given that she has not lost any weight from when we first saw her a year ago.
