I had a 3 legged cat for a very long time. About 10 years. The poor thing lost his leg to a commercial lawn mower (those big ones with that scissor-like attachment in the front). It didn't seem to bother him much, though. Edit: I mean the cat, not the mower...

We're long time dog owners who brought our very first cat into our menagerie last fall, a 5 1/2 month old American short hair who was still sort of kittenish. Our male Husky seemed most interested in him and got bitten and slapped multiple times. I mean one time the cat was slapping away on his nose with both paws wappity-wappity-wappity-wap, like a boxer. My wife and I laughed so hard. Now they're besties.

They stayed out of each other's way for 13 yrs.

They just don't want to latch while slapping. Slapping is to keep something away, not to latch on it with a claw and drag it closer. When they want to drag something closer, they do use claws, oftentimes even when playing.
