Finding it VERY difficult to transition from Finale to Dorico from Finale. I seriously hope they make more videos explaining the differences. I actually bought Dorico before Finale broke the bad news and found the learning curve to be too complicated at that time to justify switching over. Now it looks as though I'll have no choice.
Yes we do www.steinberg.help/r/dorico-pro/5.1/en/dorico/topics/notation_reference/notation_reference_chord_diagrams/notation_reference_chord_diagrams_c.html
I will say, a lot of these funtions in dorico are blowing my mind. I've been working extensively in Finale for 7 years, and know it inside and out. But automatic divisi? You needed a FinaleScript code to do that in Finale. This is definitely worth the upgrade and learning time.
My systems are overlapping (treble clef overlaps bass clef of the system above) and I canNOT figure out how to move them so they do not overlap. They are not even spaced evenly, which counters what the guy in the video said about "working at the global". Why are they not spaced evenly to begin with and why are they overlapping??? Crazy!!!
This will certainly come in handy! Thanks! Like some of my fellow posters, I'm not too thrilled about this. Way back in the '90s, the first time I tried to learn Finale after years of pen-and-ink music calligraphy, I was really discouraged very quickly. Finale had a different tool for everything I had done with my pen and triangle, and it was really non-intuitive. Well, next thing you know, I got a job as a music engraver for a small outfit owned by Alfred, and I had no choice but to become an expert, and quickly. Then I spent 15 years teaching notation/Finale as an adjunct professor. In truth, my main thing was the result, not the tool, so if my students were using Sibelius, that was fine with me, except that I couldn't tell them exactly how to do something like I could with Finale. Time for another learning curve, I guess...
I'm really worried about this transition. The last time I tried it, Dorico was awful for people like me that compose with extended techniques and non-standard notation. Is it better nowadays?
I'm here because I just crossgraded from Finale... why is the act of choosing how many and which measures are on a system and spacing the systems such that they fit on the particular pages you want them on seem to be a way more difficult task than in Finale? I know it's not something classical engravers care about, but for those of us making lead sheets and chord charts, it's crucial!
It sounds as if Dorico has some real advantages but no-one has yet thought to mention lyrics management for choral music: how entered, how edited, where stored and choice of font/size. The examples look nice but I hope the lyrics tools aren't as clunky as in Finale. It would be nice to feel that one can keep the personal look achieved over many years with Finale rather than having to accept that ubquitous generic big publisher look specified by bossy handbooks on music notation! But I'll probably switch although a little voice says "better the evil you know.."!
How do you move measures or systems to next page? I've looked everywhere and tried what I saw in videos but nothing works. Why is this so difficult? It was so simple in Finale just drag it where you want it. Where can I find the answer???????
There is a similar option to Finale. In Engrave mode you can select an item on the page and use the buttons in the top left corner for 'move to previous/next system'. The shortcuts for this are comma and full stop/period because they also (on english keyboards) have < and > arrows on them.
I have been trying to establish the beaming thickness by default but I can’t find how to do it. It was pretty simple in Finale but can’t seem to work in Dorico. I have found individual thickness of beams in some notes, but not as default. How do it do it?
@@dorico The flow title tokens are correct, and I can a page number token, but I don't know how to get the correct page number that belongs to a specific Flow.
@@AndreasvanHaren Maybe you need {@flownFirstPage@} where 'n' is the flow number - see page 3 in this PDF: www.steinberg.help/v/u/dorico_5_1_tokens_en.pdf
Tragic. There is simply no comparison between Finale and any other notation software. The plugins alone make it superior in every way. Try doing inverted canons at the 10th with values augmented by 100% in Dorico. Easy in Finale. Try converting a MIDI file recorded as triplets in 4/4 to 12/8 in Dorico. There's a plugin for that in Finale. And the final (no pun intended) slap in the face to all the loyal users is Finale selling us to Dorico, because make no mistake about it, they are profiting big-time by "recommending" that we switch. I wonder how much Steinberg paid them? Open the source code, Finale. Let post-commercial developers keep it alive. Or did Steinberg pay you not to?
Wow what a useless video. It says you can easily change the title, composer, publisher, etc. but then doesn't explain how exactly one gets to that screen. What's the point of the video if you're not showing us how to use Dorico?
It's an overview video (although the titles etc information is in File > Project info). If you are just starting out try the first steps guide on blog.dorico.com/getting-started/ for detailed information
Who's here because Finale broke the bad news?
Sucks, right?
I certainly am. The end of an era...

I've been a faithful Finale user since 1996. Almost my entire music career has been accompanied by it!
1991 here!

Finale has the ability to create very large libraries of guitar fretboards. I hope Dorico has some information on creating fretboard diagrams.
Yes we do www.steinberg.help/r/dorico-pro/5.1/en/dorico/topics/notation_reference/notation_reference_chord_diagrams/notation_reference_chord_diagrams_c.html
AND the reason why Finale had very little incremental updates is because Finale was pretty much solid! IMHO!

@@KenjiStandlee A LOT of people developing SCRIPTS are going to be out of business. I THANK THEM NOW profusely!
Been using Finale ever since the days of Composer. What a bummer!
The spacing between lines and staves have some weird behavior. Can you explain why changing some have an effect but not others?

There are some very nice lyrics tools and you can edit all the font styles and spacing to suit your needs.

WHY do I have to "translate" over 1000 finale-files to XML? This is insane. I did not ask for to get forced to use another program than Finale.
I tried Dorico SE today, it made me to keep my old computer with Finale, or switch to sibelius
