@@vitalik38815 I'm not entirely sure, but it could be because the people who originally described the eyes just...didn't have a word for that type of blue yet. It's surprisingly common- like how in the typical poem "roses are red, violets are blue" The color of violets wasn't specifically named at the time of writing, so they just went with blue.
It was either because of biblical references, for example like John the Baptist who baptized Jesus, people wanted to name their sons after kings who were named John, or both. The king one could apply to a lot more common names like William or George.

It was 2006. I was 11. I was in my History class reading through the textbook. My eyes read over a section about Roanoke and how all that was left was a note. I was so pissed there was no more information or some sort of resolution. It stuck with me forever, I remember my brain going through all these different ways they could have disappeared. I’m almost 26 now.
Same for my textbook. And I vividly remember the only photo they had was a VERY badly airbrushed "crotoan" superimposed onto a black and white image of a regular, obviously non-inscripted tree.
I recall being about 11 in 2016 and hearing about this as well, I thought it was so interesting hearing that no one knew what happened to them. I’m now 17. Or maybe it was earlier, I can’t remember.

The poor man had to spend the rest of his days helplessly wondering what became of his own next of kin and the dozens of other people entrusted to his care, never to see his daughter nor newborn granddaughter ever again. May you have found your lost colony in the next world, John White.
I don’t understand why didn’t he just sail back to England, repair the anchor (and maybe bring a couple spare, and then head to croatoan? Like you said, it’s his his daughter and granddaughter why would he never return?? There is something so off about that he must’ve been lying. They probably were all dead and he didn’t want to admit it
@@BreakingWhiteJohn White died in 1593, the anglo-Spanish war lasted from 1585-1604. the fact he managed to get a boat out to America is dangerous enough. Keep in mind, Rule Britannia wasn’t a thing back then, it was Rule Hispania. England couldn’t just waltz in and out of Europe as they pleases, especially when at war with the premier colonial-naval power that was Spain.
The thing that confuses me most about this whole thing is the fresh footprints that were found as if someone was watching White look for the colony he left behind
maybe the natives inhabited it for a while and that would explain the smoke, cause tbh I don't think there would be a natural fire like that that wouldn't spread. That might also explain the CRO like they put one Croatoan then wanted there to be more evidence but were captured in the process, although there was no cross, maybe they were too rushed, but if they were too rushed they would have put a Cross instead of 2 Croatoan signs. We will probably never know. I agree that the colony split up, one went to the mainland then the others went to Croatoan and were successful in surviving at least, but the mainland people were just slaughtered. I just think the footprints were due to Natives living on the island or just hunting or something (fire), and when cannons went off they just bolted out of there real fast. Or as the @Tr1bal said it could have been just a Native Scout, and I mean that's pretty similar anyway.
It's funny, we put so much meaning into anything and everything that's unknown. Do you think if an archaeologist found some trace or evidence from our, or more precisely, your past they'd try to put a meaning to it even if it really wasn't something all that important to you in the first place
"fresh" isnt a precise description anyway. Which is litered through the whole examples of the document from White. In an age where everything just takes so much longer, fresh can mean "30 minutes ago", "a few days ago" up to "only a week old". The fire or smoke also was unprecise in description, could have been anything and no combat indicators were to be found (so its not like the fort was burning down indicating that a fight just had happened when they arrived). Also imagine this, he needs 3 years plus travel time and arrives at the location just to witness the attack of the natives against the fort? Come on. Yeah just in time the natives decided to burn the colonists so the english guys can take note. These footprints mean nothing but mostly because the report of these events are unclear, unprecise/vague and leave a lot of room for interpretation. In short, they arent reliable information for anything. The only clear hint are the carvings.
Imagine being this dedicated and talented and passionate about your art and it actually paying off with millions recognizing your hard work. This guy is literally living everyone's dream.
I grew up near Roanoke Island, my family and I used to go on vacation there and the rest of the outer Banks of course! It's very beautiful! But every time I've been on Roanoke Island I've always gotten an eerie feeling! Especially where they found remnants of the colony! It's really cool if you're ever in North Carolina I recommend checking it out!

We traveled to the location and right as we got there i go "shit i forgot the potions" and just travel all the way back to our house to collect.
@@samsplinter68 Actually, Native Americans prefer being called Indians. Seriously, most of them don't even care. It's not racist, really; although confused for the native people of India at first, the term 'Indians' is never used to describe actual Indians anymore, and is thus a label for only Native Americans. It's also easier to say than Native Americans, as it's easier to say 'white' than caucasian.

15:40 "... they were prepared to remove from Roanoak 50 miles into the maine." You interpret this as meaning "... into the mainland" but one meaning of the word "main" is the open sea (often, in poetry, "the watery main"). That meaning is entirely consistent with moving 50 miles to Croatoan.
Wow, this is really interesting. Virginia resident here, and the topic of the Lost Colony of Roanoke is a part of required Virginia history courses in primary school. Except they leave it at "Everyone was gone, Croatoan was written on a tree, and the rest is a mystery." This was very intersting, well done and wonderful video as always!
As a high schooler in VA, I was wondering the same thing! It’s weird considering I live in Richmond and you’d think you would learn more about it in High School
When I was in High School in Virginia in the 60's, we had a Virginia history textbook, in addition to a world history textbook. IIRC, the Virginia history textbook started its account with the Jamestown colony, first settled in 1607. This was about 20 years after John White first landed on Roanoke Island, which was to became part of North Carolina. While there was mention of the Roanoke Colony in the Virginia textbook, it was footnoted as a failed first attempt to colonize North America. Emphasis was instead placed on Jamestown as the first permanent colony established in the "New World".

Nice to have a video about Roanoke that retells the entire history of the colony and doesnt overdramatise this. Also everytime I hear about the story it's always about how John White had no idea what could've happened and didn't know about Croatoan being a nearby tribe and just went "ghosts must've dun it". Also I like to imagine that someone started to chisel "Cro" into a tree and then either realising that the word was too long for the tree, or someone else was like "no don't write it there, write it on this post here" and they had to start all over.
Lmao US schools still teach history? I thought they were still too busy brainwashing people with gender studies and how bad white people are. Number 1 point of most history is that everyone is equally guilty and nothing can be explained with a simple "yes" or "no" answer. I'm surprised people still think the native americans were massacred when in reality everyone massacred eachother lmao colonists and indians vs colonists and indians, everyone one is human and tons of natives sided with the british to massacre their "own" even though natives somehow being united is wrong in itself, each tribe was literally a small nation.
Maybe because Teachers don’t have the equipment to teach like he does? I mean this is animated and has images and shit and teachers only teach by talking and point at images. Not really interactive
I agree with that conclusion. The colony were short on supplies and sought out more inhabitable land. I think the majority of the colony went to Site X, while a small band of men left the engraved Croatoan message. I believe they purposely ravaged the Roanoke colony and left a subtle message in an effort to not bring unwanted attention to the colonies survival from potential future Spanish scouts. The engraved message would be understood by John White and lead him to the ‘small band of men on Croatoan’. They alone held the new secret location of the colony, now known as Site X. If the Spanish scouts found these brave men first on this exposed outer island, then they would’ve died with the secret.
Update: on November 2020 (I too am confused as to why they're still searching during a pandemic, but that's irrelevant), a search attempt resulted in the findings of a trove full of English potteries located 50 miles west of Roanoke Island. A few months prior, another archaeologist claimed to have found similar objects on the Hatteras Island, 50 miles _south_ of Roanoke. I found sources saying that if both findings were acurrate, it would strengthen the theory that the group of colonists had splitted up into two or more survivor camps, some of them assimilating with native tribes just like Lemmino suggested. Which is crazy wtfff

It's fascinating to see how well the English kept record of everything. Also their cartography was and still is amazing. My ancestors (Turk) kept records of literally nothing. @@joshuakim5240 Whereas written records also have huge gaps and presents most of "Civilized" history as propaganda. I'm not saying the Civilized always lie (Maps and Science have to be accurate) and Pastoral/Gatherer/Hunters always tell the truth (they have good reasons to be deceptive, on occasion), just that all evidence shouldn't be ignored just because it's handed down orally (something the Civilized find convenient for their own purposes).

They were finally released when a blacksmith created a passage by melting the mountain, allowing the gray wolf Asena to lead them out. It’s amazing how quickly LEMMINO debunks the popular myth that the message “CROATOAN” is at all mysterious. This just goes to show how thorough LEMMINO’s research is.
Anthony Ramsey literally the first youtube video that popped up when I searched “Croatoan” was about how mysterious the inscription is. Also, there’s an entire episode of Supernatural that centers around an otherworldly explanation of the inscription. Just because you didn’t think it was mysterious doesn’t mean popular media isn’t flooded with it.
Anthony Ramsey if you paid attention to my comment, you’d notice that I never used an absolute statement like “everyone” to describe the myth. I simply said it was a popular myth (clickbait definitely qualifies). You, on the other hand, immediately suggested that literally no one thinks it’s mysterious. And now, you accuse me of making an absolute statement based on a few examples.... which I did not do, but you did. You are arguing with yourself.

The fire and footprints were the most fascinating and overlooked aspects of the mystery. What, or who, caused the fire? Why was there a fire? Who was running away from an abandoned village, and why didn't they return after White's crew made their presence known as peaceful inspectors? If it was the Roanokes, they likely would have attacked as they did the fifteen crewmen. So many questions, so few answers.

The broken anchor is pretty sketch. Sounds like the colony might have been wiped out and Smith not wanting to return to England and say "my bad they all died" was able to save face by saying "We have proof they are safe and moved location. I wasn't able to check tho, anchor problems".
Indeed an Interesting theory, but the only problem is John white didn’t want to leave in the first place, for both professional and personal reasons involving his family. He had to be convinced to go. Why would he want to cover up the whereabouts of the people he originally wanted to stay with? It seems more likely he just wanted to believe that his daughter and granddaughter were still alive, and that he wasn’t unwittingly forced to abandon them to a potentially grim fate. After all, who would want to live with the guilt and grief from assuming the worst? As for the anchor, John white proved before that he was a bit of a pushover when it came to dealing with experienced naval officers during the Chesapeake Bay dilemma. So it seems reasonable to assume that returning to England after the anchor cable snapped was not originally his decision either, but he went along with it just as before.

And I vividly remember the only photo they had was a VERY badly airbrushed "crotoan" superimposed onto a black and white image of a regular, obviously non-inscripted tree.
i hate unsolved mysteries. Just the thought of me not knowing it pains me. Roanoke was the worst of them all.

The thing that confuses me most about this whole thing is the fresh footprints that were found as if someone was watching White look for the colony he left behind
Probably the natives. Maybe a scout was watching, and when a group of men got ashore he took off in fear of being shot.
maybe the natives inhabited it for a while and that would explain the smoke, cause tbh I don't think there would be a natural fire like that that wouldn't spread.

Baby Virginia, lost her life at such a young age without even knowing who is her granpa, bless her heart
I had to watch this in class for a project on the lost colony and what we thought happened to the colony. Our teacher gave us the link afterwards and I fell down a rabbit hole of these videos that I love. Thank you for making these.

Now factor in the fact that known Turkish history has obscene amounts of warfare in it and remembering orally passed history becomes even harder to do when everyone is killing each other.

The people led out of the valley found the Turkic Khaganate, in which the valley functions as its capital. This is a story not only told by Turks but also the Mongols. They trusted Simao Fernandes more then White because he wasn't named John
I don't normally rewatch videos (because I already remember what they said in the video) but Lemmino's videos, I have rewatched them multiple times! I can never get enough of it!
Great video! c:
How funny that a RUclips channel that begun making videos weekly animating rage comics and memes. Now produces stuff like this. If that isn't a transition I don't know what is 😳
?
@@melisandre4362 Ive been watching this channel when it was called 'Top 10 Memes' now it's called Lemmino a reference to "lemme know in the comments below"
@@melisandre4362 are you new in this channel?
Mother of transitions!
i actually got into edm back in the day because of his music. amazing music even if you don't like edm or electrical music
I love how LEMMiNO have the humor of Casually Explained but with the research quality of Kurzgesagt.
I'd say Casually Explained makes a lot more jokes than Lemmino.
DaOnlyTrueFalSe it’s amazing you spelled that correctly. I can never remember the order of letters in that channel’s name.
Don't insult LEMMiNO like that he has significantly better research quality.
@@abandonedmuse I have to admit, sometimes I put "t" in between "r" and "z" because of how they pronounce it.
Kursgezat shilled for UBI, I hate him
The coolest part about all this is that I’ve lived on Roanoke island my entire life and the lost colony has been a huge part of my life. Glad to finally have a lot of light shed by my favorite youtuber
That's so cool! I live on the outer Banks as well!
I was hoping to find other people who lived here
As a North Carolinian, the whole Lost Colony is a part of our identity.
Have you all been there and searched for them as well? When I was little I remember hearing about this story at school and I always thought they were taken by aliens or just vanished into a portal or something. You know, a nine-year-old’s imagination. No one ever explained about the Croatoan tribe. Makes a lot more sense now.
Hernando Malinche it’s pretty cool but personally I think we’re super ignored compared to places like Jamestown
After watching dozens of explanation videos on RUclips regarding the lost colony this is by far the best, including the backstory and all the pertinent information. Great job!
So many times throughout this I thought: "Ok, that is the end of the story" then he brings up some other thing that manages to make the mystery deeper.
I was born and raised in North Carolina and this story is one that has been drilled into me since childhood. You did a fantastic job here. Thank you for telling this story.
Could you do a focus on the JFK assassination that would be a really interesting topic
Toby Howard *jhon*
Boiledpotato12 ohhh shit
Lemmino is a big fan of topics that haven't been covered before, or rather situations/cases.
That would actually be amazing
wayyyy too big for a video like this. Read JFK and the Unspeakable
Editing, music, and narration all on point. Well done, mate.

Imagine being a native in on the coast of Virginia and a cannonball just flies out of nowhere and splatters your family.
@@Alex-uz3fb It's a fifty-fifty on whether that's good or bad. Half the time, a tragedy. The other half, they were eating their neighbors at the time so whatever, good riddance.
John White: My daughter and grandchild are on Croatoan we must go there!
Captain: Wellllllll the anchor chain snapped soooooo we’re gonna go back to England and ur never seeing them again sorry lol
But the captain was John White?
I think he was meaning the navigator
@@ninjalel2877 I mean he left for three years and in a time period where the average human life was short and they were already roughing it out, he probably had good reason to believe they were dead
@@markhawaiian1115 This was a different ship. He was in charge of the ship that dropped the colonists off. On the ship he came back on, he was just a passenger.
@@Dayvit78 I did not pay attention to that. If that's the case, thanks for the information.

as a North Carolina native, I’ve learned about this mystery so much throughout my schooling. It’s very interesting, and confusing. Thank you for this video.
Colonist, not native.
@@jasonhaven7170 Good thing I have Cherokee ancestry.
how is this person so talented?! the music, the animation, the writing, everything is perfect! it's such a joy watching these videos. love them.
Probably a team?
radblue5432 no he does it solo, no other editor no team, it’s truly “quality over quantity” 😎
@@arcanewrath Ok didn't know that. That sounds amazing.
He's not a democRAT
The broken anchor is pretty sketch. Sounds like the colony might have been wiped out and Smith not wanting to return to England and say "my bad they all died" was able to save face by saying "We have proof they are safe and moved location. I wasn't able to check tho, anchor problems".
that's an interesting theory :0
@@gomahklawm4446 There was a backup. They didn’t want to risk breaking the backup as well.
This is legit a pretty solid theory.
though this theory is plausible they had four back up anchors and they were down to their last one which they didn't wanna risk breaking
Man your videos already were made with a crazy high quality, but with this one you really nailed it. In the top 3 highest quality video in all RUclips for sure, even higher than many RUclips sponsored professional videos.
