They made great videos. The Boys had a falling out with Rick Rubin and they left Def Jam. They got the Dust Britgers to produce their second album, Paul's Boutique (1989). That may be the most sample heavy album ever as every sound except the rapping was a sample. There is a great video that breaks down the album and plays the original song for each and every sample. Once you hear enough from that, check thst out. It is great.
It’s hilarious to use the old man “no autotune” line with the Beastie Boys, whose best beat is just Ad-Rock repeating “intergalactic, planetary” into a vocoder.
im 49 and a metal lover, but Beastie Boy's can drop a beat like no other, what I love about this, it was recorded live and done in 1 take with 1 DJ, with 1 record, on 1 turntable!
I was a little older, and a metalhead at that point so this wasn't my thing. Do you know what album the DJ was using? Back then I thought this was stealing someone else's work, but what the DJ was doing was definitely an art.
@@robotto8858 It's not a normal album. It's an album designed for scratching. It just has samples on it. So, there's a horn stab and a drum sample, for instance. Now, the samples are actually taken from other songs, but the album itself is specially made.
For sure, sample albums of vinyl or cd’s were ways to make simple clips become their own depending how they were used. Some of those samples became so popular being used repeatedly- but dj’s n producers like Mix Master Mike, DJ Shadow, Qbert, Square Pusher, Aphex Twin etc. did in such a way that it was iconic and timeless into their own genre
Just amazing to me is the Yin Yang of the Beastie Boys. Yin side, they are incredible @ Hip Hop w/ a D.J. who needs no musical instruments. Yang side, they play their own instruments & still create bangers. ruclips.net/video/_WvgGdivQzE/видео.htmlsi=UZ5_IeNLaMhI2RO7
Negative ghost rider, their earliest roots were as an experimental punk band, The Young Aborigines in 1979, and Mike D (Michael Diamond) was drummer and only Bestie Boy in the band, in 1981 their bass player quit and was replaced by MCA (Adam Yauch) and they switched their name to The Beastie Boys. Shortly after that the guitarist quit and was replaced by Ad-Rock (Adam Horovitz), and a gal named Kate Schellenbach switched from percussions to full time drummer, she would later start the band Luscious Jackson and is listed as a founding member of the Beastie Boys. In 1983 they had some local success with the comedy-ish album Cookie Puss, a 12" single with 4 tracks on it, including samples from Steve Martin's comedy album, and elements of rap mixed in. After Shellenbach left the band in 1985 The Boys switched to all Hip-Hip and got hired as the opening act for Madonna on "The Virgin Tour". Their break through debut release as just the 3 members we know and love was Licensed To Ill in 1986. Run-D.M.C. released their self titled debut album in 1984 that went Gold, King Of Rock album in 1985 that went Platinum and Raising Hell album in 1986 that went Multi-Platinum, making them the first Hip-Hop group in history to achieve a Gold, Platinum and Multi-Platinum album individually or all three milestones combined. As Chuck D. stated at The Beastie Boys induction into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, "Run-D.M.C. introduced Hip-Hop to cities all over the country, and the Beastie Boys picked it up and drove it straight into the suburbs.". The Beastie boys also begged Rick Rubin to listen to a mixed tape of some guy they heard at some of the local NY clubs, he gave it a listen and later signed him as one of the first artist ever on Def Jam Records, his name LL Cool J. Rick Rubin also asked the Boys for their input on an opening act for their first tour, to support Licensed to Ill, and they talked him into bringing Public Enemy along with them, which was their first time playing big shows outside of the NY area.
You're right, man. I had a terrible childhood and when I explain to my daughters I frame it as a hero's journey, I persisted through all of the trials and challenges and today I am a terrific father. I didn't perpetuate the cycle of abuse and I am a mighty force for love because of it all.
You're right to be proud of yourself. I was the daughter of addicts and I tried so hard to escape them but ended up in a relationship with an addict and got pregnant. I looked at that perfect little girl and knew I didn't want her to have the life I had. I left her dad with $300.00 in my pocket and rebuilt my life. It was HARD, but I gave my daughter a good life and she grew up to be an amazing woman who I am so proud of.

This record is a throwback. You nailed that. The DJ is Mix Master Mike. He won so many DJ competitions in the 90's that they allegedly asked him and DJ QBert to retire and become judges so other people would have a chance. He was not the Beasties' original DJ - that was Hurricane. There is a documentary called "Scratch" about DJs (available free in full on RUclips and highly recommended). They show Mix Master Mike trying to hook up with the Beasties to do some DJ-ing for them. He leaves them messages on their answering machine demo-ing his skills. It's pretty funny. Anyway, he is one of the best ever.

There's something beautiful in the fact that this version of the song came out around 1999, peak Puff Daddy / Willenium era; stripping things down to the very basics was a reminder of what the genre is beyond the flash, the cars, the money. A beat and something to say. That's all you need.

You can't help but grin while listening to the Beasties. There was an interview with Adrock where he said they were clubbing in New York one evening when "This guy came up and handed us a business card that said "World Champion DJ Mix Master Mike." I've yet to see anybody prove thay statement wrong."
The Beasties boys are legends, how cool it is you get to discover new music when its ment to be, we all get to share and discover new things!!!! nice reaction!!!
Grew up with the Beasties since the 80’s. We all come from different starting lines in life. As we get older, we see the good things when we can. I’ll keep watching. You get what’s it about. Much respect. ⚡️
This vid is from '98, after they linked up with Mix Master Mike from the Invisibl Skratch Piklz DJ crew (def worth a look for crazy DJ scratch band stuff). Beastie Boys came up with RUN DMC and used to do a lot of touring and shows with them in the mid 80s (Slow and Low was a RUN DMC tune that they passed on and Beastie Boys picked up), and there's tons of pics and video of them performing and hanging together. Cheers for this. I grew up with Beastie Boys on the cassette and CD player, and felt that as they grew as people and musicians, so did I. Very important group to me. Much love.
I came here to say this. They weren't just inspired by groups like Run DMC, they came up with them. The Beastie Boys are literally part of the origins of Hip Hop. They played with The Fat Boys, and KRS One. Real OG's of the game.
Mike rocked up at my office once, came to my desk and stood next to me and said "hey, I've heard a lot about you". One of the more surreal things to have happened in my life.
I was a teenager in southern Brazil, and I was listening to exactly this album (hello nasty) that I recorded into a cassete so I can listen all day long in my walkman.
The eyeroll at the MMM flex. Had me dying. Yeah, Mixmaster Mike is that guy. The original intro had a crazy tweak scratch over a phone call message. Undeniably one of the best DJ's to scratch and tweak.
A lot of people take for granted the music they were privileged enough to hear growing up. It’s not an experience everyone gets to have, I text my dad constantly just to say thank you for the music I love today. I was taken to the symphony orchestra from a young age, and my dad exposed me to Rush, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Metallica, Beastie Boys, Nirvana, Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. from birth, supported and encouraged me to find my own music, but if he couldn’t afford it or if he had a different relationship with music as a kid himself I wouldn’t have had the same exposure I did.
Dude I'm so glad you saw the music video cut instead of the album. Such an awesome version. If you were lucky enough to the their DVD set from about 20 years ago, you could switch between all of the camera angles at any point in the video back and forth. Was so cool to sit and watch Mix Master Mike's hands. Such a good DJ.
What's wild is that the music video version of the song sounds much better than the album version. This video is what Rap music is all about. The MC and the DJ. Rap doesn't need symphony orchestras, bands, pyrotechnics. It just needs the MCs and the DJs.
I am a music freak that comes from a family of music freaks. I listened to all kinds of crazy things growing up from Zeppelin and the Beatles (20 years before before my time) to Fela Kuti and Charles Mingus. To this day, I am still finding music that I missed growing up, in my 20's and beyond. A wise man once said "One good thing about music, is that when it hits you you feel no pain."
Have you heard Opposite People cover by his son Seun Kuti? I saw Femi live. Radio Garden free app is gold for world music as well as KCRW 89.9 Santa Monica City College radio. They introduced Fela and Femi etc to me, they broke Beck to radio as well. Led is my favorite group. Playing for change does a mean version of When the Levee Breaks with JPJ as well. Peace!
Polo, the algorithm sent me here and I am glad it did. I’m 47 years old and the Beastie Boys are still my favorite of all time! This song was released in 1998. They were rapping differently by this time but this was them throwing it way back with this style. Just reminding the world how it’s done. Haha! I’m happy for you to be discovering the B-boys now. I recommend you continue to dive deep in their music. “From the family tree of old-school Hip-Hop. Kick off your shoes and relax your socks.” -MCA. You will have a blast.
Loved the reaction and the honesty about where you were during this space and time. We all evolve and there is so much amazing art out there to consume that we all miss things for a million reasons. I’m still discovering artists that I missed from the golden era of Hip-Hop in the 90’s. Our tastes change too as we age and evolve. I wasn’t a Beastie Boys fan early on either. It took me a while to “get it.” Keep doing your thang, I’m digging the channel! Peace
One thing that i loved about beastie boys. They are rooted in punk rock and played punk before hip hop and played instruments even in their hip hop. Also beastie boys were huge Bad Brains fans(all black dc punk band) and chose their name to share the initials BB.
The Serial Wax Killer - Mix Master Mike. This video basically got me deep into the rabbit hole of Turntablism, and on another note, the Beastie Boys actually got me into Hip-Hop back in the day. Full respect to them. #realhiphop
God bless you mate, you arrive at different artists when you arrive there, nothing wrong with it being 1, 5 , or 20 years being it later. That is the beauty of lasting music
Thank you for being so open. ❤ FYI there’s an entire other side to the Beastie Boys where they play FUNK beats and their sound matures. Example Sabrosa & Sneakin’ Out the Hospital
Fun watching along with you, thanks - their lyricism, playful bravado and mixmaster mike just killing it... so fun, you're right, we don't hear it like this, not much anymore
- dj- out - appreciate you sharing the bare bones of your story - the amount was appropriate.. after decades of knowing the Beastie Boys, this is easily my favorite of theirs.. which I myself discovered after 2020 (the track). it reminds me of a time in my life, living in one of those concrete buildings, listening to jump up dnb (which is sparse dnb like this track is to hip hop).. i dunno.. just all good feels and memories. the rest of the Beastie catalog reminds me of the 80's & early 90's, since i am now 52. don't know how this one slipped by me before..
I first heard Beastie Boys "Brass Monkey" on a friend's cassette Walkman in '87 on the playground at school. I bought Ill Comunication the album later that year with my money from cutting grass.
Thank you Karen - He needs all the Beasties he can discover! Saw them live - eventually you'll get around to their Pink Floyd "echo's" tribute video of Pompeii - Gratitude which is very different because they are playing instruments more than sampling. Also their 1999 concert for MTV in Glasgow shows all their flavors and how seamless their were live.
I truly appreciate your honesty and am super glad you made it out the other side of darkness with such a positive outlook on things! Continue discovering as we all should!
I enjoyed your video. I was in college when they released their 1st album, “Licensed to Ill.” I became a fan from day 1. Funny thing is, I know this song, but I have never seen this video. 😂. Thanks for sharing.
8:02 Nice message (reminded me of PSA's after cartoons on saturday morning 🙂) "You've never seen/heard______?" Is a question from people who live in tiny bubbles with little comprehension of other bubbles. Glad you turned your response into something heartfelt and meaningful, may open some eyes.
What I liked about the Beasties is their lyrics. They were all about having fun and singing, no b*tches or drugs or busting caps or anything like that.
I had to friggin’ get up and dance! Love the Beasties! Music has saved many a soul, brother. I know people who say Jimi Hendrix literally saved their lives. So glad it came to you, even if it’s late, there is so much wonderful music in the world!

Imagine if modern EDM Djs had to put in this much work in their live sets. They'd die within 30 seconds.
Beastie Boys started in 1981 - they honed their Hometown Brooklyn sound by 1983
Run DMC came out in 1984
Came here to say this... THEY influenced Run DMC

There was an interview with Adrock where he said they were clubbing in New York one evening when "This guy came up and handed us a business card that said "World Champion DJ Mix Master Mike." I've yet to see anybody prove thay statement wrong."
And please do more Beastie Boys, they are simply phenomenal
You should do Beastie Boys - No Sleep Till Brooklyn. I'm sure you would love it. These guys have all the fun.
Paul revere is my personal favorite...I'm a kid again as soon as they drop the beat every time!
They were always just goofy as hell! And we ALL loved them for it! You couldn’t be in a bad mood listening to Beastie Boys!! 😂
Saw these dudes live in ‘94 wearing UPS delivery man uniforms with the brown shorts. They KILLED it.
Back when rap was formative and fun. LOVE IT!
If you haven't heard Young MC's "Bust a Move" a reaction to another "FUN" rap song would be awesome!
Man, your comments about this are so thoughtful and heartfelt. Love it.
I think it's great that you're getting to hear this for the 1st time. It's like you've had a treasure on your path all the years.
What counts is you recognize that they’re really good. No matter when picked up listening to them. Thx for the reaction
Mike rocked up at my office once, came to my desk and stood next to me and said "hey, I've heard a lot about you". One of the more surreal things to have happened in my life.
One of my very favorite Beasties vids. Great rhymes great scratches and really funny.
Beastie Boys were a staple for me growing up. Glad to see you reacting to them.
YES! The show doesn't start until the DJ gets there! Exactly! Love this reaction, man!
2:09.... so excited. Its about to go down! The B-boys are always so much FUN!!!!!
3 mcs and 1 dj yes!
Definitely telling their appreciation to mix master mike... man behind the music
Everyone loved the Beastie Boys in the day , even my Grunge teens .
Great reaction. I saw the Beastie Boys several times when they were touring to support their first album. Always a great show to me.
Nothing but bangers from these brothers. Glad you found them !
Licensed to Ill came out in 1986- I was 15 and I loved this band, which got me into Boogie Down Production, RUN DMC
That entire beat and cutting is all on the same record. Mix Master Mike is a beast!
Peace!
@@Prone2Thrill If you mean the Newen Afrobeat one featuring Seun, yes absolutely love it!
Always awesome, RIP MCA. Sad to say there will never be another group like them.
Man I loved this. Thank you for sharing, and letting us join you.
Peace
Great video as usual. Thanks for sharing and happy to see that the BB have yet to dispont.
Great reaction and your back story. Thanks for sharing. Your here now with the Beastie Boys!
Lordy this brings back great friggin memories. Pure delight
#realhiphop
I just love your reactions. You calm my soul. Genuine and honest. Thank you. ❤️
Check out their induction ceremony into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to truly appreciate their contributions to American music.
I think you nailed it when you said Beastie Boys are having fun. Beastie Boys are pure fun.
I was in attendance for Mix Master Mike’s DMC lifetime achievement award. No DJ on the planet is fuccin with the god DJ, MMM! R.I.P. MCA
Saw Beastie Boys in 1987 at UNLV. Fishbone opened. Great show!
Gary Wright, just passed at 80, the song Fascinating Things
This group would make for an amazing biopic
Greatest Music Video EVER! Mike Ds dance move is EPIC. I always barrow it when I'm on the dance floor. ✌️
Love this!
Plus they did a Concert from M.S.G. on DVD.
"Awesome, I F'n shot that!"
Is ridiculous!
8:02 Nice message (reminded me of PSA's after cartoons on saturday morning 🙂)
"You've never seen/heard______?" Is a question from people who live in tiny bubbles with little comprehension of other bubbles.
“Write that new story”…well said!
Thank you. I had never heard this song from BB.
One of the best reactors out there. Calm and honest, no fake hyped comments. You Sir are doing a great job and should be an example for other reactors on how to be genuine on camera.
I care about you.
True Hip Hop. Mix Master Mike was part of a DJ group from Nor Cal called The Invisible Scratch Pickles. Love your channel, my man. True Hip Hop will never die. Peace and stay strong.
Their dj, Mix Master Mike, is amazing! Also, the B Boys have a dvd set out where you can play different mixes of songs with different camera angles. This is one of the tracks you can do that with.
