What this scene says to me is that CGI is not the problem with modern action films. Lack of realism is not the problem of modern action films. You can have as much CGI or an absence of realism as you want as long as there is some genuine cinematic artistry involved.
There's a reason this sequence won a VES award for Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature. It's just a shame it didn't win the Oscar for best VFX; I think it deserved it.
Jon Favreau, director of Iron man put it well...When CGI fails, its the fault of the director, not the VFX methodologies. Basically the user and not the tools dictate the outcome
What makes this movie so special isnt even the action. Miller takes the time to give every character a little vulnerable moment which makes you want to care for them. A lot of modern films forget that heart is important.
LOVE this movie, it was a shame it didn't win the best picture of Oscar! I watched it in a DOLBY ATMOS theater, sound was truly immersive and accurate. The picture on aluminum screen was sensational with rich color & contrast. MAD MAX + ATMOS theater was the best theater experience in my life, worth every penny!
I like how the camera never leaves the actors for more than 5-6 seconds at a time. It's important to see how the characters are reacting to all this or you stop caring about them. Special effects should always support the story, not the other way around. Most Hollywood movies have completely forgotten this and focus on the effects and the spectacle.
1:01 this is the greatest action scene ever put to film, it's fucking unreal. It's all CGi and shit, but I believe even after 20 years, people will still be mesmerized by this
A spectacular death like that is the closest thing to beauty that Nux has ever seen. He's having a religious experience. He's seeing his fellow War Boys faith rewarded with a glorious death in battle instead of wasting away from leukaemia. The music reflects that because we're seeing it from his point of view, not Max or Furiosa's.
1:03 Look at how the music interlocks perfectly with the crazy tension building up to that spectacle.. All of the characters are in extreme peril and the melodyless beats chimes ominously as Max climbs desperately up from the back of the car. Then Nux, still completely engulfed in zeal, turns to the War Rig and the music kicks in as the enormous sandstorm shows its full disturbing glory. The music rises even further by an octave as Furiosa pushes the chaser vehicle to the tornado and they explode in the sky with the humans flying around, with Nux watching with such fervor and admiration for the warriors who are going to Valhalla. The scene is a culmination of the extreme tension that comes before, and symbolizes the glory, sadness, and madness that is the world and the situation that envelopes all of the cast at the moment.
1:03 Cinematic History. I pride myself with having a Mad Max: Fury Road poster when I worked at a theater when this film came out. Best first month of work ever.
The part when the whole orchestra starts playing the music is perhaps the most epic, beautiful and most satisfying 53 seconds of footage in the history of film. I always get shivers and wide eyes when the car gets lifted up in the firenado.
I can't be the only weird one when 1:35 this scene with music gives me very emotional feels, the bodies crying in wind, flying up in explosive storm like spirits cast into to the heavens like a epic and chaotic version of some old church painting of flying angels and Nux looking at them like if they were the luckiest bastards and it would be the sign "today is the glorious day to die and join with brothers, in Valhalla".
@Dick Buttley I saw this at theatres as well, it was unbelievable. I was also lucky enough to see movies like dunkirk and bladerunner 2049 at theatres as well. There's nothing like seeing a fucking good movie like fury road on the big screen
I didn't even know this existed until I noticed my family was watching this. (I was visiting them so I forgot the name of this movie. good thing I remembered that this is an apocalyptic desert chase scene.)
I can crearly remember, watch other faces in cinema in this Scene. Every one was: What in the hell I am watching...this is madness!!!!. Film finish and there was a big ovation. Epic
What others haven't mentioned is how the music really creates both the adrenaline rush and wonder (during the tornado) in this scene. You can even listen how it abruptly returns to the adrenaline rush the moment one bloodbag hits Nux's car.
This scene has a deeper meaning as well, that gets so easily overlooked with all the on-going action. Max and Nux are chained together, obviously a metaphor of their entangled fate. While Max is out there, fighting for survival in the storm on the back of the vehicle, much like he does in general from the start, Nux sits comfortably inside of the car, a symbol of how he hasn't looked at the outside world more objectively, and fights for Immortan Joe because he cannot see things out of his metal box. The roof ripping off the car and Max grabbing Nux's hand symbolizes his(Max's) influence in changing their fate, forcibly preventing Nux from dying for Immortan Joe. The rig hitting them with the split second point of view of one of the skulls on the front might be foreshadowing for Nux's death in the crash later in the movie.
There is also a lot of metaphor. The men being used as fodder while the women are held and "protected" but also used for their bodies and childbearing, pawns of ugly leadership using a suit to appear strong. Sort of a reflection / critique of gender roles.
You could consider the scene less a foreshadowing of death and more a visual metaphor for being rebirthed, I suppose. Makes "I live, I die, I live again" very on the nose.
Straight up cinematic masterpiece,a nearly flawless movie. The score is so good with that shot of them driving into the sandstorm. I gotta rewatch this movie pronto.
WITNESS MEEEEE!!!! Man, this movie had the most impressive action scenes I have ever seen in a movie, and I have seen a lot of them. This film stands alone. I don't know a sequel can even top it.
This was my favorte scene in the movie as i saw this in a RPX Theater [ultimate surround aound] and seeing the storm in such a crisp manner..how the cars were dwarfed..to the sheer size of the tornado lifting one of the cars and fling the occupants around and not forgetting to mention the Musical score was enough to leave me breathless.
I think my favorite part of this scene is that the music along with the slow, wide shots showing the dust storms just demonstrates how much damage the wars and resource depletion did to the world.
My wife didn't want to see this in theaters so I went by myself. I sat there in total amazement. A cinema achievement and nothing comes close. A year later I got her to watch it on blu-ray and it doesn't hit the same way it did in theaters. She will never understand.
This movie is perfect, each line, each frame, each scene and each song. It's full 10/10 really hard to find. The beginning, the middle and the ending are perfect.
It was probably my 5th or 6th viewing and it's release window was starting to wind down, so the theater had about 10 people in it. But I distinctly remember the audience being quiet, and as soon as the light from the flare flickered out, a guy in the audience said, ".........Wow."
I watched this scene when I was high and when the music kicked in when they were in the middle of the sand storm was overwhelming. Legitimately teared up because of how awesome it is. This whole movie is pure cinema.
This is a work of art. Its breathtaking and overwhelming. The emotion of everything is not lost in the beautiful chaos. Look how Nux desires and admires to to die in fire and glory. The desperation, determination, and sadness of Furiosa. ....and a Max....tied to a car...in a scene that is so epic, it makes final battles of super hero movies look boring.....and then u realize ypur just 1 3rd into the movie.
Once I visited a sand dune in Kazakhstan. It was windy and my eyes became full of sand. When I left it my eyes were so irritated that I cried for about 5-10 mins straight. And I wonder how Max is able to see clearly in that storm without glasses? Still, great scene!
Went to see Mad Max in theaters with my gf with absolutely zero idea what we are going to see, as well as zero expectations. When we got to about 1:33 my jaw was to the floor.
"wonder how much death and badass I can fit... Explosions, lightning AND A FREAKING CITY SIZED DUST STORM THAT CAN PICK UP WAR RIGS AND TEAR THEM PIECE FROM PIECE!, Oh, here will do."
The joy of watching this in theater was unparalleled. I shed a tear of surrealism while being there. Thankyou for making such an incredible art in the name of a movie
I love how as soon as Max realises what's going on with Nux he just promptly begins to break the window lol Plus he's damn lucky the roof flipped off in the wind or he and Nux would be sky-high a second later
Yesterday I finally bought the new OLED screen and Fury Road was the first film I’ve watched on it. On the 1:35 moment I literally started crying. Me, a grown ass man, who rarely gets too emotional during the movies. The combination of the score and the otherworldly visuals just knocked me out of the park. I kid you not, it was something of a religious experience. All I wanted to say is - long live the film.
My jaw dropped when I watched that sequence unfold on the big screen for the first time back in 2015. The mad balls on George Miller to throw you into what would be the climax of any blockbuster RIGHT IN THE VERY FIRST ACT!
I had never seen this film before. So I had the insane chance of having my first experience of it in a 4DX movie theatre. I don't understand people that say that 4DX is just gimmicky when this film was almost made for it. I'm crying every time I'm seeing this scene. And the fact that all the vehicles are actually drivable cars, and that they absolutely destroyed them for the effect is mind-blowing. This is a masterpiece of a film. It's just unreal.
My favorite scene from The Movie, The Rock Riders attacking The War Rig is another great scene, but this scene is iconic as fuck, seeing the Sandstorm and the Tornados was just beautiful, id certainly would have gone into the Sandstorm if i was Immortan Joe, throughout this scene i literally froze in awe, its like you're in a different dimension, id say you've entered either The Speed Force or Apokolips from DC Comics
Saw this in an IMAX theater.. so worth it. This scene was just jaw-dropping, and I've seen a lot of movies in theater. The whole movie was great tbh, a worthy successor to the originals for sure. Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron and the dude that played Toecutter.
I sincerely love this movie. There is NOTHING wrong with it. No pacing issues. No weird characterizations that doesn't fit the plot. Zero bad shots (unless you count looking at Immortan Joe, that sick fuck), ZERO ISSUES. It's not a superhero movie. OR a drama powerhouse. OR a genre-defining critique on society. It wasn't marketed as the end all, be all of movies. It simply showed the fuck up, cleaned house and left you wanting more. Pure. Movie.
Watching this scene in isolation makes it look like a really cool ending sequence for your favourite action movie. Then you realize that in Fury Road this scene happens before the midway point and that pretty much the entire movie is an andrenaline induced madness.
I never realized how genius of a move it was to push the car into the tornado. Sure it removed that car and it's warboys out of the equation but if you look closely it also removed the warboys that were on her own truck who would've most likely tried to kill her eventually once they out the pieces together .
This scene always gives me goosebumps. The music, the mood, it’s insane.
You are NOT alone. One of the most striking scenes in movie history.
1:15 I cry still it's so beautiful I was at the theater I couldn't hold my tears I don't know why 😭
I couldn't wait to get the soundtrack for this.
@@gtrpaceteacher8775 it's such a visually striking moment and sequence as a whole, no clue why I get teary eyed whenever I watch this either.

Cinematic artistry sums up this scene very well. It's brilliant.

The lighting is amazing! It just keeps transitioning from black and white to colors!
I finally saw this in the cinema this past weekend, at the BFI IMAX London, once in colour 3D, and once in 2K Black and Chrome. I can die happy now
Saw this in an IMAX theater.. so worth it.
They got torn off when it entered
