this!! I also try to remember who their parents are, what time frame the story is modeled around, and what culture the character is apart of; it makes the character feel so much more real!

So true, names totaly matter! Everything has to fit like a puzzle, so that its not all explained at once, but you have an answer at the end

I think one important thing authors miss for the sake of the story to go a specific way is that the decisions a character makes throughout the story should be a reflection of the character's personality. If I'm a hardheaded person, forgiving people isn't easy right? so why would someone do something to your character and they forgive them in an instance? it may not be the best example but I feel like this is really important.

The main character is a diner waitress who gets into a relationship with a struggling artist from Boston with a difficult past. But that's just the premise. Hey there! So im a first time writer and i want to write a story for myself and my oc's. )For fun and i wanna try writing.) But always when i want to start i dont know what perspective i want to write in. I want first person but i also want to do first person from multiple characters and idk how you can write that, same in 3rd perspective. I think that would be easier for me but i dont know how to swith from one character thoughts to another. Its really a struggle for me to start writing. I just wanted to say, Ana, that your videos absolutely saved my debut novel. I would not have made it through draft one without your videos playing in the background. I would turn on a writing vlog of yours (even if I had already seen it before) and just write. I just wanted to thank you for keeping me motivated to finish my debut novel and self publish it. Even though I've only sold 15 copies, I'm still happy. It wasn't about selling a lot of books, it was about putting the story out there for people to see.

I'm not Ana, BUT I can tell you that it's perfectly okay, but I do suggest writing the second draft in a computer, since it'll just make editing easier :)

The panic attack quirk is so realistic it's almost scary! I've personally never seen myself from birds-view when having a panic attack/meltdown, but my view of myself does switch to 3rd person. Or I just feel like I'm not myself

I get inspired to come up with characters via songs, mostly Gracie, Conan, Taylor, Chappell, Lana and Alec. Their songs feel so character worthy whos filled with flaws and has a negative character arc. My protagonist deff has a negative character arc.

hey girl! i need to ask you something because for the last 20 minutes I'm looking at my draft and thinking if i should put a comma or a dot at the end of my sentence (it's a dialogue) you know sometimes writers put commas at the end of a characters words, i wonder if you could explain to me how that works

Take my character, Faye Fellowes. I named her "Faye" because she was originally a mischievous thief, etc (hence fairy/faye blah blah blah). But then I changed her character quite a lot...and now she's like...completely different sort of?? But I love her name and can't picture her with any other name 😂

Glad someone else has a name obsession and a long ass list of baby names AND book character names lmao. The problem I have if you could talk about it, is when you add in characters that are very very minor characters (for example like a persons guard needs a name if they are included in the story regularly but are so minimal)but still need names or even like the villain(s) I struggling with (names AND their backstories) I would love if you could talk about that! I’m trying to write my first fantasy series (actually first book ever in general) but there’s sooo much to consider it’s getting overwhelming, I don’t want to give up because I am enjoying myself but it’s hard to know everything you need to create it
You could base the character’s name off of what happened in their past (check what the name means and have it match up with the backstory)

but also !!! naming your characters meaningful things is important but it's also necessary to remain realistic and relatable. for example if your story takes place in modern times and without magical aspects don't name the character 'amethyst ravenette' or anything crazy like that. i see this most commonly in beginner writers, but even i sometimes have to stop myself for giving a character that i love too much of an uncommon or unpalatable name.

Hey Ana! I was just wondering, since I have a project at school, it’s writing a book, and I’m aiming to write a short story this whole term, but I really struggle on what to write about. I decide on an idea and get bored of it after. Recently I had the idea of a 17 year old girl who lives in the outskirts of somewhere in a small cozy cottage with her mum, and she’s an artist. And it starts when she is painting in the woods and a mysterious deer approaches her, and surprisingly he answers her and starts to communicate with her. I’m struggling to find the plots and themes of this book, I was wondering if u had any ideas to add, but if not, then maybe some other suggestions that fit a short story. I also wanted to say thank u so much for all the hard work and inspiration for us, u literally make my day when u post these amazing videos. ❤ We believe in you
I’d pay for a masterclass! Or if created digital cheat sheets with summaries of these tips etc broken up by ‘character’, ‘plot’, ‘world building’ etc etc. They’d be great resources

Hey ana. I have a question about my book. I was considering some arcs for my story and I wanted to know if an arc has to be positive. In my trilogy, I have a character who craves stability, in the beginning, her mind is fractured and by the end of the whole series, she’s lost practically everyone and her home and I have some ideas for positive and negative arcs for her. The positive is her finding a place to stay with an old friend and she’s finally stable but the negative one is her in a complete spiral. She’s left alone and scared and vengeful. I’m torn between the two and I’m not even sure if it will end as a trilogy or as a longer book series. I need any sort of help and I’m open to suggestions ❤
I’m writing a book right now and I completely agree with the naming things you said. I had a character names Thomas, but Thomas didn’t suit him as a name so I changed it to Felix which really helped me invision him

ty! my friend and i plotted a book, and we made names for characters and the kingdoms, but we were lost and hers didnt have much meaning. i named the kingdoms based on words in latin.
