If I had the cash and money wasn't an issue, for sure I'd get the 1954. Would rather have that than a 50K Pair of Custom Shop Jimmy Page Tele's or a 50k SRV Custom shop #1. These aren't exacting copies of someone famous (and both are my Idols), These are the REAL THING! Built by Leo and Co, the same guitars that our hero's covetted and searched for. No question is these really were used to influence some of todays guitars and ther is providence of that, the value will certainly go up over time. Another 50 years? Who knows what it'd be worth. Another great vid. What about doing for Fender Friday a Gretsch (Fender parent co of) ? Would like to see your take on a Duo-Jet 6128-T 59 or Sparkle Jet 6129-T. They were more similar to the Les Paul back in the day. Cheers.
I bet the warranty covers things like dead pots with era correct replacements and solder points that may go bad. Things like that. But I think it’s an awesome move on fenders behalf
I don't understand what the mechanism would be to drive up the prices. They are setting the prices. They are in control of the prices. I'm curious what you mean and how that work from this sales campaign. Also I would point out there are no no guitars from 1962. Why is that ? I bet they couldn't get them for a competitive price.
Guitar Ocd Now that one cracks me up. There are tons of people on Reverb now selling 70’s CBS strats, quite literally the worst strats ever made, as some sort of vintage gems for $3,000. Lmao. Barely passable as firewood.
My 1957 Tabacco sunburst with maple neck Stratocaster, in near mint condition, given to me by my father, with original tweed case, I have turned down $40K, it's NOT for sale, period!
the owner of the Colts is getting his credit card out as we speak. For us normal people, Just buy a Mexican strat and have it set up properly with maybe an upgrade or two and, basically, you've got a guitar that will sound/play just as good.
I am just happy to own my vintage Fender, a Precision Bass built in 1964, what is difficult enough to get if you are born and raised in Germany. This one has the wear and tear of an often played instrument, every scar tells a story. I still play it in studio situations, just can't stop because it plays like butter and has a great sound. I am having a strong bond to the instrument, I bought it in 1979 when it was nothing more than a "used Fender axe", but representing my first "real" Bass. Before my old P it just was a Hoefner 182 short scale bass, good enough for a beginner, but I allways dreamed of a "real bass", a Fender. After 42 years of playing bass on stages all over Europe, 40 with my old P, the old axe has retired from live circus. This now is the duty of a 2016 MiM Precision 50's Classic I found on the used market this year, and, man, I have to say that this one is one of the best basses l have ever played. I use it a lot - besides the MusicMan StingRay 4 + 5ers l have.
I'd love to rock a vintage Fender, but not for those prices. If I had the money, I'd go to Norm's or Rudy's and probably get a much more reasonable deal.
@stirange I'm guessing when you get to the truly high end, there's less room for haggling both because the people in the market for one of these generally don't have to worry about the price and because dealers who pay to get one in stock are going to want their full value back out of it. Even if they have to sit on it for a bit, somebody is going to come along and pay full price eventually.
Well I can't afford to buy any of them ,but if I was loaded , I would happily buy them all ! Let's be honest , most of us that like vintage guitars would buy whatever we wanted if we had the funds . People, no more jealous child comments please !
Fender is probably losing money by having these in "inventory." It may also and attempt by Fender to stimulate the vintage market pricing by using the exposure generated by this collab. Who knows, maybe they have a bunch of additional vintage guitars and basses. It seems odd that this sale featured only Strats.
@John Rapp when the vintage guitars are worth a lot, it adds to the value of the brand, and it helps sell reissues. Fender does it a little, but Gibson is expert at it. The main purpose of the custom shop is to sell that "vintage vibe" with new guitars priced way above the top of their regular line.
I LOVE old Strats. But I'll have to stick to my 2017 pro strat. It was a stretch foe me to get that one, and I saved up for a long time for it. It's a fantastic guitar. But I think these guitars are just WAAAY it off my league. Great video, though. Keep 'em comin'!
For a collector, makes huge sense because they do not care about price, they just do not want to get screwed by a fake or parts guitar, I find it odd that the lake placid blue and other colors are so cheap. the progression was standard two ro three tone, lake placid blue or Daphne blue.
They got the base plates on all three pickups, I had a thin sounding 97 American, I rewax potted added three base plates and a .4 cap, it roars, like sounds very excellent,
As I often say, the easiest and cheapest way to get a 60 year old Strat is to buy it new and then keep it for 60 years. I have a 2008 American Standard Strat (back when the American line was called Standard). In 2068, my grandson will be in his early 50's, so that will be a nice thing for him.
Hmm gives me an idea. I know a few auto makers are selling cars through dealers that are certified by going through them and supposedly replacing parts that are worn but I dont think they're selling them for premium prices. They mark them up to cover remanufactured costs and you get a car that is like new. Mercedes and Jaguar are a couple that I know do that.
Fender rocks again! This is a great idea, it raises the quality of the used guitar market by authenticating the composition of these vintage guitars. You have to be Eric Clapton to afford one, but it also can serve as a psychological selling technique for the entire used market. I might justify spending half as much from another dealer, but I tell myself that at least I did not "overspend" by paying top price from the Authentic Fender Shop. And Eric Clapton can buy his vintage arsenal faster now, with more confidence that it is an authentic and complete item, as described. Awesome!
HeyLiem Clapton bought his vintage Strats in the early 70s for $150 each. He only buys new Custom Shop guitars now. Well, he doesn’t actually buy them. They are given to him.
Also thought this was a kick start the vintage market thing. Wish they would offer Certification service. I'd pay to have all mine examined and get a letter to include for sale.
Not sure a Master Builder is necessarily the best person to judge whether something is authentic ... a Master Dealer might be a better expert ^^ other than that I like the idea. What's keeping me from buying a "real vintage" guitar (other than money of course) is that given the prices of vintage instruments, the incentive to fake them seems so great, I would never trust an offering to be original.
For a 1954 strat , I can buy a new mid engine corvette and still have plenty of money to buy a pair of custom shop Strats. By the way for those who bend strings a lot , these guitars are 7.25 fretboard radius with vintage frets so expect some fret outs when bending.
Maybe they're asking above blue book prices to help cover the cost of Etsyverb's listing fees? 😏😎 Also: incoming comments on these are only for doctors, lawyers, and CEO's!!! 😸
If you haven’t Trogly, you need to try a Gibson Invader. They’re the shit! I just got one in Ferrari red! I tried looking for a video where you checked out one, but to no avail. Lol. They have bolt on necks, but they’re really good--and made in the USA!
Sure I'd play that 65' Strat, because I already have played a 65' Strat through Fender Pre CBS Fender amps. In the 70's we used to kill bugs with the base of our old guitars.
Long time viewer with a request. I think it would be really cool if you reviewed a vintage Fender HM Strat. Very cool and different guitars. I have a 1988 one and it is a beast.
Don't play into the hype, they did this in the 80's with the "vintage reissue". This is for the collectors with lots of $$$$. Eddie Van Halen even admitted this about his super expensive one off's. Money grab. I'll stick with my partscasters built with exact specs for me, and my Mexican/crafted in Japan fenders. Glad to see you branching out Austin. 👍👍
Having a long talk with a guy working at a high end guitar shop I got a reality check on the whole market. The big buyers have for decades been middle aged guys wanting to collect a few classics that they keep and use. The same group now is interested in great guitars but they are more interested in high end gourmet builders with modern features. The guys that have all the classics are now retired and downsizing .. doing consignment sales on as many as 3 guitars at a time. The price is heading down to older Custom Shop Guitars selling for as much as 30% less then when they were new. This situation will only get worse. I was told that my 10 year old mint Custom shop Strat is worth $2800.00 USD and that is BEFORE commision!
Corporations moving into the thrift store, used or pawn shop market is bad for all. They see reverb and eBay sellers making money and want a piece of the used market too. I hope not because the prices will definitely increase and the competition would decrease. My vintage fender would be worth $25 large and Fender’s exact same one is worth $85 large. Yuppers
@@ciggy_ when you look up the definition of "dork" I really hope you withdraw your comments, cause Austin is definitely not that either! Try being a little better person each day.
What is your opinion on the G&L Tribute strats, i fancy getting one soon, the black with a tortoise pick guard. Saw a few reviews and they compare to the standard Fenders available for a smaller budget. Thoughts Trogly?
Unrelated but i REALLY dig the sound of the new player series and I have heard they sound different than traditional strats. Can anyone recommend strats with a similar sound to the player series? Thanks
Makes sense from Fender's point of view, if they've got the capital and the knowhow, then they may as well just buy up all the stock on the market, certify it and sell it on for a profit. For the buyer, it'll mean higher prices and also beware of anything that's coming from other sources, as it means that Fender didn't want it for some reason.
For the sake of having these "mint condition," etc., what steps are the Reverb people taking with these?? I mean, suppose they have a 1961 that's powder blue and the body's in great shape, but the pickups and some of the electronics are shot?? Do you try for an "era correct" swap like Trogly does? And, if they don't - what then? Does the collectibility stop at original "everything" over the guitar being able to be "played" in the first place?? Interesting. Also, for an average of $60,000, you could take your search anywhere you like, not just with this deal. Although it is nice that Fender is putting their name on it.
That's a lot of dough for an axe that you won't be able to take out of the house to play anywhere. I would just stick with my Mexi Strats. They sound and feel great. Nice video bro.
"Gibson's never been able to do metallic finishes right" *Stares at treasured metallic finish Firebirds on my wall* Alright lmao XD Great breakdown, I just got the email about these and was super curious. If I had an extra $50k kicking around I would rock THE HECK out of one of these!!! Love the candy apple red.
It is new for guitar world, but not exactly new as idea, Ferrari has been doing something like this for ages, they don't sell your vintage Ferrari, but they do inspect it and give you a certificate, that being said its a pretty cool idea fender is doing and definetly Gibson should copy this
Honestly, I think the American Strats from the late 80s on are at least as good as the vintage ones. There might be a certain magic pixie dust involved in 50s Les Pauls that's impossible to reproduce, but there's nothing exotic about the way pre-CBS Fenders were built. So if I absolutely had to have one I'd have the Custom Shop saw one up for me for a few thousand bucks.
@@stepvanjoe3469 You mean made by Mexicans in Mexico, or made by Mexicans in California. The geographical difference is the only difference. Give me the Mexico version any day of the week. Why not?
I find it surprising that Fender is selling these because of the historical element although maybe they have a significant stash & need to make room? At any rate, I’d rock the ancient snot right outta’ those strats! They’re beautiful & sound phenomenal. Of course, I’d have to do a common sense mod And get rid of that middle tone pot and put the volume there because Leo, not being a guitar player stuck the volume knob too close to the bridge pickup. I know some people like it that way but it’s highly intrusive for those of us that have Gibson blood running through our veins. Once again, trogly’s for the win!
JESUS CHRIST those price tags. If you buy one they better show up and make dinner as well. Considering you can get actual artist guitars on reverb I can see very little reason for spending that much on a vintage guitar that you could probably buy one for a lot less from someone else. I got 1 fender brand guitar and it is a 2007 Highway One (the last year they made them good) the finish is worn some because I think it was designed to quickly wear so it developed the worn look earlier cause a warm stick of butter will dent it. I'm not quite sure if it still qualifies as original because I changed the pickups with Fender Vintage Noiseless pickups, I mean they still are Fender pickups made around the same year they just don't have a stupid 60hz hum. If not I guess I can put the originals back in if I ever sell it.
Those prices seem pretty accurate to me. There are a limited amount and eventually be worth more, though it may take decades. I can't afford it but even if I could I'm a guitar player not a collector. I take really good care of my guitars but they still get a little bit beat up over the years. Those guitars are too special to enjoy. Someone will buy every last one.
I thought this was kind of intriguing news. I'll be interested to see if they decide to break into the vintage market after this haha.

I dont know....a guitar that costs more than my car....that sorta things not my bag, baby (austin powers voice)...
It would be nice to have a second vintage one.I'd buy & play the damn thing if I could afford it.
Love the new title card
Insane markups
I would rock a brand new Strat.
Oh yeah absolutely rock every single one of these ‼️‼️
"Gibson's never been able to do metallic finishes right"
*Stares at treasured metallic finish Firebirds on my wall*
Alright lmao XD
Great breakdown, I just got the email about these and was super curious. If I had an extra $50k kicking around I would rock THE HECK out of one of these!!! Love the candy apple red.
good video,. as usual trogly, nice to see older strats,.. i will let my fellow players purchase them, however !
So freaking cool. I love your love of Gibson's but I'm a fender dude my self this is sweet.
@9:34 Answer:
Guitar *player:* NO.
Guitar *buyer:* YES. (but he would not 'rock it')
Ergo, Truth: The rocking days are over for those guitars.
Holy crap those things are mint.
It is new for guitar world, but not exactly new as idea, Ferrari has been doing something like this for ages, they don't sell your vintage Ferrari, but they do inspect it and give you a certificate, that being said its a pretty cool idea fender is doing and definetly Gibson should copy this
Maybe that way they will learn that most people dont play their guitar while covered in 1000 grit sandpaper after setting the guitar on fire
Way way too much $ I'd rather have a new one!
MiM or U.S.?
@@stepvanjoe3469 You mean made by Mexicans in Mexico, or made by Mexicans in California. The geographical difference is the only difference. Give me the Mexico version any day of the week. Why not?
So vintage guitars with high demand should be cheaper?
00UncommonSense00 meh I rather spend my monies on old 80s squiers
Now these are quality strats

I find it surprising that Fender is selling these because of the historical element although maybe they have a significant stash & need to make room? At any rate, I’d rock the ancient snot right outta’ those strats! They’re beautiful & sound phenomenal. Of course, I’d have to do a common sense mod And get rid of that middle tone pot and put the volume there because Leo, not being a guitar player stuck the volume knob too close to the bridge pickup. I know some people like it that way but it’s highly intrusive for those of us that have Gibson blood running through our veins. Once again, trogly’s for the win!
Cool guitars! I like my strat but for that kind of money I would take a 15 min drive to Alembic and have a custom guitar made just for me.
Fender taking your money again in a innovative way :)
I’ve yet to come across any of your clips I don’t find interesting but the style on this one was really good....
From where can I get the ‘ Vintage guitars price guide ‘ ?
I'd rock one if i were sent one but since my MIM '95 Special resembles a slightly modded black '57, I'm good!
So Austin, when are you going to do a video on your vintage strat?
Hey, nice intro change, like it a lot
Please review the early ('79-mid 80s) Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion.
Hell I’m Vintage too! I guess I better get a bigger life insurance policy!
I paid 14K for an early 3TSB 65 in worn condition, all original except a refret.
