It is disheartening that Nigeria chose to change its post-independence national anthem to adopt one imposed by the colonial British authorities. The original anthem, "Arise, compatriots, Nigeria's call obey" was a symbol of our hard-earned freedom and a tribute to the sacrifices made by countless Nigerians who fought and died for independence from British rule. By reverting to a colonial anthem, we undermine the very essence of our national pride and the struggles endured by our forefathers. Nigerians who laid down their lives in the fight for independence did so with the hope of establishing a nation free from colonial influence. Their bravery and commitment to freedom should be honored with a national anthem that reflects our sovereignty and unique cultural heritage, not one imposed by former colonial rulers.
