I didn't realize there is a difference in term of quality. But after having thousands of books and running out of space constantly, thinner is somewhat desirable, as long as the other quality is not affected. I was able to order mine from amazon a few month ago for $108 pre tax.
The paper quality thing seems like a pretty normal trend. I have viz manga I got a decade ago and the pages are higher quality than what is released now. I can tell when I pick up something with the old SJ logo and compare it to a newer one. It might be subtle, but it's definitely different. I'm fine with it since it means a volume of SJ manga is still $10, which it has been for some time now despite higher prices from competitors and lots of inflation.
I got mine from Amazon preorders too. I wasn’t going to open it till the next set comes out so I can binge read. NGL it’s shocking to see the difference!
I think the biggest thing for me is the unknown. Very surprised to find out it was printed in Italy. I'm sure if people had known where it was printed, I'm sure it would have deterred a lot of people. Overall, I don't mind that much as it was a great deal and wanted to finally get into the manga as I've been following the anime since it came out. Thanks for the comparison and review!
I didint know either and I would have liked to know ahead of time. The online pics and dimensions are of a normal box set so it feels like a bait and switch.
One thing to be aware of is the MHA box set is all printed in Italy compared to the normal USA prints. Viz has apparently been reprinting more books in Italy recently. They use thinner paper that is closer to a Japanese tankoubon. This is why the box set is smaller and each volume is thinner than what you would see normally. The thinness causes more page bleed which I am not a fan of especially considering the MSRP of this box set is about the same as other box sets that have USA prints. I bought the box set but may be returning it. It's currently unclear if the MHA box set 1 will ever be printed in the USA. I wouldn't say it's not out of the question but it would mean they need to redesign the box a bit. Even the handle is different than other Viz box sets, indicating again that this was indeed seemingly all printed and assembled by different people than the usual USA box sets.
I started reading this comment thinking, "huh sounds exactly like my situation". Then I realized this is a copy paste of my comment on another vid xD Thanks for spreading the word, I ended up returning mine because I disliked the page bleed. If the books didn't have page bleed or the boxset's msrp was lower to indicate the lower quality it would be fine. Just kinda lame to sell two drastically different quality books as the same item and not have a way for the customer to know unless they shop in person. It's like if you bought a shirt but weren't sure if the fabric would randomly be a lot cheaper than normal for that brand.
I checked and my JJK singles are from different printers too. Some from USA, some from Canada and some from Italy. The Italy ones where slightly thinner (can also be depending on the content since I didn’t compare the same volumes) but I couldn’t tell a big difference in the paper quality. As long as it’s not more noticeable than that I’m okay with it but I would prefer them all being the same. The difference in 7seas paper quality is way worse. Hopefully the printing of MHA box set 2 is the same so it’s not to big of a difference when it’s finished. Thanks for enlightening me on the issue!
Thanks for making this content, i hate how people don't care how the quality of viz is going down (some of them even telling me that i shouldn't protest about it). I hope this video can making people aware how this quality printing is going down and viz need to fix this somehow.
Yoooo what up Neet! I dont like that Im paying the same and the quality is dumping its crazy! Heck I would have been fine paying more or even waiting if it was delayed etc just come on!
from what i noticed the difference are pages are thinner, saturation is lower, laminate is thin and rough texture vs the smooth of the US prints. Sometimes they have some random printing lines as well idk why on the spine. On my spy family copies, the colors are not even close to the same more on the grey/silver side and there are stress marks on the spines and folding joint. I saw this in my black clover as well...the US is a dark black vs the a light black on the italy copy :/ now these are very obliviously lower quality when you have them side by side but luckily the readability is fine but i do want viz to work on their quality with the italy prints if they are going to cost the same...
@@TheMangaSloth they really do! If Viz really cared I'm sure they can get the quality up to a certain standard :/ out of all the companies using new printers they are by far the worse. Seven seas is only the paper being different it seems like. There's a thickness difference and how white the paper is. With yen press i haven't noticed much of a difference other than the glue being white.
Well so long as the thinner paper doesn't make them more fragile, and the translation is the same as you would see outside of the boxset, I don't see an issue with it. It takes up less space, which I like!
Yeah the amount of space it saves is not much compared to just having a better quality. BUT the csm and others seem to be a little better now so I dont mind.
I never even noticed some of my manga volumes were printed in Italy! I had found a couple of different volumes of my books were a bit thinner than some others, or the feel of the cover were different than the others. Now I know why that is I would say!
Thanks for showing me that the box set have Italy prints. I'm not a big fan of them and sometimes the binds just looks they they compacted way too much. I just want the box set even though that I'm caught up with the singles because it my favorite series.
A lot of new reprints are being printed in Italy or Canada. I got the MHA boxset and noticed the difference so I check out the other vols I had and noticed that the Dr Stone volumes I got a few months back were also printed in Italy. I guess its a new thing to cover the demand of manga. I dont mind it, but if the pages were easy to rip I'd care. But all still looks good in my collection
I have the recent reprint of Yona and hunter x early volume and they do appear thinner. I don’t mind at all since that means i can store more in my shelf. I just wish that they are uniform tho. If they are going to release a thinner version they should have done it from the start. 😅
I also noticed this with boruto manga..i had old one and compared it with the new ones cause the new ones were very very thin i thought i got a fake bootleg manga but that wasn't the case
They still have some decent deals as of the last couple days, check amazon, not as good as the preorder price in April, but i've seen it as low as $111 -tax or so, mine was $116 with tax when I pre-ordered. There's still hope!
In my opinion, Viz really fumbled this release. I think the box sets should never contain Italy printings and if they do, Viz should have announced that before release. I'm honestly worried that the fifth box set of One Piece that's eventually gonna come will also contain Italy volumes and it's gonna ruin the uniform look of the previous volumes.
@@TheMangaSloth Hopefully Viz will continue to print future One Piece box sets in the US and Canada because switching up the thickness and overall quality midway through would be far too jarring to be honest. Viz actually bringing the Italy prints up to par with the US ones so there's no difference anymore would be great tho and a perfectly fine alternative I think.
I think box sets should should be USA quality. The box set is something special and should be made with the better quality paper. But, my bleach box 2 had Canada prints and it's quality was amazing. Sometimes I prefer Canada quality of USA prints because it's feel more smoother and more comfortable to hold on when reading.

I agree with this! The quality has def gone down.

Im looking forward to mine arriving this week! I think as long as you get both box sets it wont be weird with the difference 😁
