Grading stuff that isn't an old comic has always been a turnoff to me, but since there isn't really a market for acrylic slabs for display purposes for manga, I can see some niche use cases for displaying a first print Vol. 1 of your favorite series. The numbers are pretty arbitrary, but this company also allows for slabbing only with no grading. It's pretty expensive either way though. But just like everything else in the graded industry, your collections should be read/used/played first above all else before you consider getting anything graded.
100000% agree with you thats why I did it the way I did. Only misprint, sentimental, and variant got graded. All witch I will never read again and if I ever did want to (outside of digital) they are all doubles and triples.
I dont think there is a big market for this. Especially in the secondary which is why this wont become a thorn like some game/tcg grading. Like I said the #s are meaningless to me and were just so I can review grading. I think if you are going my route or many others and want to do this the regular slab without grading is the way to go. Well Like all the reasons I said in the video its collecting and display. Thats why I had misprints and sentimental volumes slabbed that I had doubles and triples of just for display and to review.
@@TheMangaSloth But honestly, how many regular people buy multiple copies of one volume? I know the joke that collectors buy 3 copies, 1 for reading, 1 for lending and 1 for display, but I really doubt that many actually do that. And misprints aren't a rarity worth preserving with US printed manga, and are in fact pretty common, from what I hear.
And there are many other ways of preserving books that allow you to actually read them.
Exactly 100% This is NOT for regular people. I do not recommend this for the average person. I have 4k+ manga and could only think of 3 to slab which were doubles BECAUSE of the (major but cool) misprint. for display + a sentimental one + a alt cover I chose 3 books I will never read again. (those exact copies cause of digital and doubles I still could)
This is a niche for sure its not for everyone. It will make some people happy. Its the same as comic, card, coin, toy, video game, grading. You cant play our use them when they are sealed unless you unseal them.

Just as I thought this will help manga more than hinder it... already your misprint has become Special and has created intrigue, how many people will have one ?, How many are there existing ?. This is how it is supposed to work, the intended purpose is to preserve something special in a high quality and this brings notoriety to the hobby by spotlighting the desirable or personal.
I have commented this on a different channel, but this will bring an increased interest to Manga, it is an added level of fandom creating conversation and excitement around the collector community. It will not affect 99% of Manga only the 1% that are unique. Anything that adds eyes & sales helps the industry and its continued survival, this will freshen up a slowly stagnating Manga online fandom by create a whole new video content & conversational era with an actively involved fanbase just like comics has.
I wanna say "Thank You" not only to Sloth but to the real guy behind that mask, you did the brave thing and will be remembered for it. The first collector to properly cover the Slabbed & Graded Manga on RUclips not just following the mob but seeing further beyond the crowd.

Thanks for doing this in-depth review about the grading process! It was interesting to see! I don't have any manga in my collection that's special or rare( and Im poor😅) so I probably wouldn't use this type of service, but I do think it's cool for people to have this kind of thing available to use if they have the means and the need 😊 keep up the good work manga sloth!

While I do think the very idea of slabbing up a manga is an odd thing to do, I could potentially see the appeal if you got a special edition or a volume that could be considered a collectors item. I do like the fact that it is not like too crazy expensive.

This is kinda dumb, like stores don't even wrap manga in plastic when they sell them, they're just there on the shelves, it's very rare to get manga in near mint condition, unlike trading cards that are always well protected and are always mint when you open the packs. They're books and you're supposed to read them.
Yup yup yup getting something manga wise close to a 10???? LOLOL good luck haha. Some stores do plastic wrap their manga which is good but takes a lot of time im sure.
Kinokuniya wraps all their manga (whether they're explicit content or not).
Yup thats who I was thinking of when I wrote that.
It’s the same thing for American comics. They get damaged from shipment and being put on shelves unprotected so high grades can be somewhat tough

I don't have the income to justify this but it cool to have the option for it. I mostly read digital so it whatever to me. I think people are missing that people collect for different reasons. One being just to have it and look at it.
Its not for everyone but I agree its a cool different way to collect
When I first heard of this I thought it was a horrible idea. I still don’t see a purpose in terms of the actual grading or for people trying to resell them for insane prices but as a collector I think it’s nice to have those really special volumes you just want to look at and keep perfect. I too have double copies of some volumes because I have one for reading and another for collecting and keeping in good condition so for that reason alone this might be an okay idea
Yeah im with you there and thats basically how I see it. I dont think the reselling thing is going to be big and I certainly would not do it just for that. But for a special signed copy or something could make more sense.

imo especially grading manga is very silly, I understand for content creators to do it because its content but for the average person there is no need for it
No need for most things and heck no need for physical manga even. Just another small niche that people can do things and try things out Like I said in the vid.
This is my first time hearing about graded manga, personally wouldn’t do it, but I can see why some manga collectors would grade their manga.

3. I explain reselling and oop stuff and how it wont be a thing. This wont raise oop prices JUST cause someone can seal it. Manga does not have the secondary market like a TCG
4. Everyone and their mother has known about manga grading for OVER a year and especially the last 3-4 months. Its been live going on 2 months and not one thing has changed for oop or in print books.
Thats the world we are in if you like something or not. Im a manga channel and never talked about the subject yet so thats what we do. We cover all things manga and I gave my opinions and debunked most of it.

I’m not a fan of grading or anything that takes a hobby and makes it into a hype / money grab situation. I can see the positives about doing it for displaying the manga, but then it would be good if it had som UV protection too. These felt a bit to unprofessional to me, the manga doesn’t look centered and the text to the right looks like a random thought. Why write “Death” of Eren Yeager on the AoT one lol. And is that text going to be consistent for everyone that sends in that volume or will they make up a new one then?
I agree with ya I dont think Id even display a manga,game,book,comic, or card in the sun even with UV protection haha. I believe the "death" one is the name of the cover variant since there is 3 variants for the 34 cover. It will be consistent outside of grading/signatures etc
@@TheMangaSloth You could be right, I don’t have it so I wouldn’t know! Still felt funny since it could be seen as a spoiler. I based my comment on how different they seemed to each other in your video and on the examples they show on the site. Where they list first appearances of characters in said volume. Have a hard time seeing them be consistent with that type of text for the same volumes when the text itself seems random but I can also be wrong. They might keep a long list of all the phrases they’ve used ;)
I still appreciate you showing what the grading looks like so people can make their own impression even if I’m not that impressed by it.

(though if you have vol 34 you better have watched/read it lol) I believe everything is tracked and listed hense the QR code etc. So when its all for display and in the system there needs to be consistency or people will be annoyed and want it fixed ect like with comic grading. BUT I also could be wrong lol.

Why would you spend 25 dollars to get a 10 dollar manga graded and you can't read it. This whole idea is stupid and Beckett block people who call them out on it 😂

Well past the reasons I gave in the vid its just for fun/collecting/display if the person sees it that way. Beckett is DEF not the first to block people for just being negative and mean in the manga/collector space LOL. They wont be the last.

2 question, is it the website that grade the manga? And if i understand it correctly was it possible to get my manga Signed from a author?
Beckkett is the website like I show in the video. They are a grading company for manga, comic, cards etc. If you have manga signed they will grade and can authenticate it for you.

Yeah there are some cool things people may like doing with these! I think having signed etc would be neat having slabbed!
At first I hated the idea. But, now I'm kinda in the middle. I, like you, don't really see this affecting the second hand market all that much. I do hope this pushes publishers to push out more special volume releases/variants. I'm still on the fence, I have a couple volumes that are special to me that I'd like to slab or a variant cover of a volume, etc.
I basically thought the same thing when I heard of it a year+ ago. I was like "man thats silly" While I am not hyped and in love with it I think your right with specific choices could be neat to slab up. Like a special signed copy from a mangaka or something. I dont think it will have as much impact as the fussy people are saying but if publishers make more variant stuff for my fav series I wont complain lol Good points!
Im planning on ordering volume 4 of boy's abyss and volume's 5&6 of dai dark on the 16th. And i got to go out to my nans to pick to vol 20 of edenzero and the 1st dai dark boxset with volume's 1,2,3&4 in it.

Yeah I see what your saying. But like I said in the vid the manga secondary market is not like the video game etc markets. So this will have suuuuuuper little in any impact on getting volumes.

Great video as always. Everyone’s got things they like and things they don’t, that’s why there is variety. I like the thought of having special manga up on display without worrying about it getting damaged. The grading however is a bit odd to me

Yeah I agree 100% if you like it or not its okay. Grading can be weird but they offer the slab only kind without grade so that may be better for some people. The shelves behind were just wall mounts and brackets for hanging shelves and then white shelves on top!

Bro it's a manga channel. It would be weird if he didn't talk about this and show how it works. I think the idea is cool for display pieces but I don't think they should be for reselling. Like I'd get signed manga in the slabs to protect them for myself I think that makes sense. How is it really any different to grading comics

Yeah imo special or signed or some alt cover even in a dif language is the way to go! They may expand to the bigger size next but not sure if they will get to the thick books haha
Would it be worth sending in something thats like 10k and you literally can't find it anymore? Like you can try searching for 8 years and will never find it? Cause I kinda want something I have rare slabbed like this, but the risk of losing it by some sticky fingers at the grading company makes me go.... ehhhh not worth it... For reals you can find rare American Comics. Action Comics 1st appearance of Superman? Sure no problem and that's rare.... you can't find what I have in manga form lol. It took me a good 8 years and it wasn't even online, some mom n pop shop with treasures from the past. After acquiring it I still haven't been able to find another 1 besides someone selling the entire volume set. They don't exists, they are not out there for sale lol.
Its worth it if you are looking to seal it and protect it some for display. They get sent items well over 10k every single day and they dont get stolen. If that happened then they would not stay in business long since the internt would scorch them. So send it in and put insurance on it when you ship ezpz

@@TheMangaSloth I dont want to say but its a rare hentai manga lmao. I'm debating gotta sit and think on it. I do want it encapsulated so it stays in excellent condition, all volumes are signed too on the inside. I'm just so scared of sending it out and not getting it back. It legit took me like 8 years to find the missing volume and I have only ever saw another 1 like 8 years later lol but it was selling as a set. I would literally kill myself if I lost it through the mail or a grading company snatches it. Those slabs looks awesome too with the custom label. Was looking at them on the Beckett site the other day. Cherry Blossoms and the moon bridge styled 1s looked the best.
