    In this clip I explain how to get your DJI Smart Controller working with the brand new DJI Air 2S. You’ll need to make sure your firmware on both devices is updated to the levels I mention in this clip and rebind your drone. Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks again for watching!

    I rely on your videos to get me by. Thank you. I had a problem updating my SC because it would time out and shut off before the update could finish, when using DJI Assistant 2 on my Windows 10 PC. I solved the problem by keeping the Smart Controller active by touching the screen and playing with apps, such as file manager etc. Just anything that would keep the SC from timing out until the update could begin and truly take over the SC.

    Rick. I had it in sports mode flying over a lake near me, when it suddenly lost power and came down , unfortunately in the lake. I have now seen a couple of clips where they have lost contact. On both occasions the controller was in sports mode. There is also another clip where the quality of the video on the SC is a bit late in refresh. I have the Mavic Air2 and I have not had any problems with it. The 2S only lasted 1 hour. I have ordered a new Drone but until I can be reassured The SC is Compatible I will be using the Remote that came with it. There is a clip By OriginaldoBo which shows exactly what I am talking about . I hope other people dont have it happen to them as I was quite upset by the experience. The battery was fully charged, in case your wondering.

      Charles, thanks for the post and I'm still confused because even if you powered off the Smart Controller while flying, the drone would simply return home. I agree that there are a few small issues when using the Smart Controller with the Air 2S right now that I expect that DJI will fix with firmware but nothing that would cause a drone to take a dive. The issues stem from the fact that the Air 2S uses O3 for the video feed, which is 1080p and the Smart Controller can only support 720p. The way to fix this is to simply put the SC in smooth mode to lower the resolution. I've seen a lot of clips making an issue of this and I think it's amazing that a 2+ year old controller can work with a brand new drone. If you're worried about the SC with the Air 2S, I'd stick with the stock controller until we see a firmware update Rick

    So to be clear, are you saying that after you have a paired the Air wS with the smart controller and then in the aircraft management section switching back-and-forth to the Mavic 2 pro or zoom you have two pair again? And then pair the Air 2S all over again when you want to switch back-and-forth? That for me is a dealbreaker, I have finger dexterity trouble.... so for me it is a big deal.

    Hope you can help. Got both the 2S and Smart Controller in June. It’s 09/18 and the problem I’m having is the video feed from the drone to the Smart Controller…it’s constantly freezing. It wasn’t doing that when I first got it, it was a gradual thing which kept getting worse. I hooked up the original controller with iPhone and notice it to froze, but not as much at the SC. I’m getting ready to ship the drone to DJI but after seeing this video I’m really confused, is it the drone or the controller that’s the problem? You mention downloading Assist 2 firmware, trouble is my iMac won’t open it. I dropped a lot of money on these products, I just want them to work.Cheers👊

    Glad the Air/Mini 2 controller accessories and Air battery accessories cross over to Air 2. But, if you have battery guards and gimbal protected, how about blade protectors for the Air 2? You explained the importance of motor caps for the MINI's, how about thin washers to protect Air motors? I saw support bar, arm to arm, landing struts for the MINI'S. Added weight to registration required, but wide supported landing and support for the arms in a crash? Long. "U" shaped bars that clip just inside the motors, stable landing with clearance. Mount styrofoam balls on corners for floats. I would like your opinion for MINI 's and AIR's. Obvious weight on MINI's means register and some performance loss with drag. Do you think a reasonable tradeoff?

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  3 года назад +1

      Charles, The one thing that might have bitten you is that the drone uses VIO to maintain it's height when flying (in addition to GPS and other metrics). VIO is really touchy over reflective surfaces like snow or water and if you got too low it could have caused some confusion and forced the drone to take a dive. My suggestion is to not fly lower than 15-20 feet over water to avoid this danger. Good luck and let me know how you make out. Rick

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  3 года назад +1

      @@Vlaakster At first glance, this is a bit of a red herring. All of the clips I've seen that were mentioning any issues were flying the quad out to 4000', well beyond any human visual line of sight. My testing so far was within 2000' and it was rock solid in video feed and control. There will be a slight compromise in the video feet at longer distances when compared to the dedicated Air 2S controller because that one uses the O3 for video and Ocusync 2 for control. Splitting these channels provides more bandwidth and a stronger signal. I'll be testing this further in a few days when the rain stops and update the comments with what I find.,

    • @Vlaakster
      @Vlaakster 3 года назад

      @@Dronevalley Thanks Rick. That makes sense. To be honest, I rarely go out to 4000' or more anyway. I am excited to be able to use my smart controller if/when I get the A2s! @@Dronevalley I flew it around 500' out at about 200' AGL over a thicket of junipers, and at the worst case, it was down to less than 1 fps. Later, I reattempted basically the same flight and this time, the SC actually went black completely and so I hit the Auto RTH button and then power cycled the controller. By the time I had video again, it was in the descent phase of RTH. Following that incident I went into the DJI Assistant and forced a refresh of the software. I'll report back after I test it again this morning.

      Thanks for the post and I've had a few folks mention this and I haven't seen it in my testing. I think the issue might be related to the Ocusync 2 vs. O3 transmission tech and the Smart Controller not being able to decode (or keep up with) the higher resolution video feed. One thing you can try is to reduce the "quality" of the video in the settings. Try setting this to Smooth instead of High Definition and let me know how you make out. The actual control signals are still sent over Ocusync 2 so they shouldn't be affected.

  • @randbaldwin
    @randbaldwin 3 года назад

    The "smart controller" came out way before OS3. Of course the newer tech is better. This is also why I never buy "all in one" computers. Keep the components separate so upgrading isn't as painful.

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  3 года назад

      Rand, thanks for the post and what I like so much about this upgrade is that DJI thought through using the Smart Controller (older) with the Air 2S (newer). They purposely designed the Air 2S to support Ocusync 2 for control and O3 for video. This wasn't broadly communicated, but if you check the specs you'll see this in there. That tells me they are trying to bridge both the Smart Controller and the new FPV goggles. I'm waiting for that second show to drop any time soon and will post a clip when I sort that out.

      Chris, I know other fliers have had issues with the video lagging on the Smart Controller but I haven't seen it in my testing. I did notice that a lot of those issues happen we;; beyond VLOS and I don't test (or fly) out that far. The real reason this is an issue for the video is that the Air 2S is using O3 for the video, which is 1080p and the Smart Controller uses Ocusync 2, which is 720p. You can fix this issue by switching to "Smooth" mode in the controller to compensate.

      Thanks for the post and I can't speak to what others have seen but I thoroughly test everything I talk about on the channel and haven't noticed any issues with lagging or transmission. It wouldn't make a lot of sense that the range could be affected since the only thing that was added was the profile for the Air 2S and the radios used for it are the same. I'd have to have more details about the specifics these folks were discussing and then I might be able to comment further and test the issue. I do find that sometimes folks like complaining about the smallest of things that turn out to be nothing.

      @@Siamect I just watched the clip and Dobo is a friend of mine. I've only tested mine out to about 2000 feet of distance because that's as far as I can reasonably see it and had no issues. He made it out to almost 3 times that distance before there were any real issues so I don't think it's a problem that most fliers will see. You have to remember that the dedicated controller for the 2S uses both Ocusync 2 (for controlling the drone) and O3 for the video. With the Smart controller, you're sharing the Occusync 2 tech for both so there's bound to be some compromise. Also, I'm not sure you'll see the 1080p live view of the drone on the Smart Controller because that requires the O3 tech. For me it's a fair tradeoff for the convenience of using the Smart Controller but everyone can decide for themselves.

      @@Dronevalley So the conclusion is that the original controller in combination with a decent phone or tablet outperforms the smart controller and unless you need something very specific feature of the smart controller it is just a waste of money...

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  3 года назад +2

      @@Siamect No, that's not at all the conclusion. The Smart Controller was released a few years back for the Mavic 2 product and DJI has continually updated it to accommodate newer drones that were released in the years since. You can currently fly all of the Mavic 2 gear, the Mavic Air 2/2S and the Phantom 4 Pro V2. It's an incredibly versatile controller that simplifies the whole setup process by providing one device to charge and use when flying. It's also much less expensive than a controller and phone and more reliable. All things being equal, its a great value for what it provides and since I fly all of the drones it supports, it's perfect for me. Everyone has to make that decision for themselves.

    I lost my s2 because of the smart controller

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  3 года назад

      Charles, you'll have to explain that because I can't imagine a scenario where that might happen. If the smart controller loses connection, it flies back home. If you lost video, you can hit RTH, and it returns to home. In fact, if the Smart Controller totally blanks out from power loss, the drone flies back home. Let me know a little more detail around what happened so I can understand it better. Thanks, Rick

    Dji said it has no plans for it to work with the goggles or stick

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  3 года назад

      I did see the note and think they are missing a huge opportunity here by not connecting the systems. It makes no sense that if the tech supports it that the software couldn't be tweaked to connect them. This would be an amazing solution if we had the option to use the goggles. Stay tuned for updates. Rick

      You're definitely right huge missed opportunity. Maybe if enough people start to complain. But it is Dji they kind of do their own thing.

    Have you noticed any issues with latency or video stream smoothness compared to the Air2S controller with a phone? I think Henrik's video shows best that it's not just range.

      Chis, the Smart Controller is a very useful device that can be used with a wide variety of quads. For someone like me that flies the Mavic 2, Phantom 4 and the Air 2, it makes sense. If this is your first drone it might not make sense for you but that is always up to the pilot. I did a clip a while back comparing the cost and the hassle of a phone vs. Smart Controller and it is a better solution, and less expensive as well.

      Bryan, thanks for the post but, did you watch the video? I spent a few minutes explaining how the controller was updated to work with the Air 2S (and other drones) and gave you a step-by-step procedure for updating the firmware as well as the levels you needed to be on for the Smart Controller to work with the drone. I'm not sure that I could have packed any more information into a 6-minute clip. Let me know what I missed. Rick
