Terrible leadership! Smith deliberately denies that climate change is making life more expensive for families and putting the reliability of the electrical grid at risk. This is an irrefutable fact that Conservatives refuse to acknowledge. Climate change is costing the US economy $150 billion annually - and climbing rapidly. This year 60% of medium & small sized businesses in Canada reported being impacted by record wildfires, damaging storms, floods, and heat domes - with 51% experiencing an increase in operating costs was a result - and 44% reporting a direct loss of revenue.

It's too expensive because Alberta privatized their grid. The solution is to return the power grid to being a public service.
Alberta is the Texas of Canada when it comes to this issue. They pillaged public institutions to give their corporate benefactors profits from taxpayer-funded infrastructure. As is typical, the privatization led to parasitic corporate middlemen maximizing short-term profits by removing skilled workers and gouging customers.
What did they think would happen? Of course nobody wants to build a nuclear power plant over there. The way Alberta's utilities operate, there would be a meltdown. Given how the CRC is allergic to taking responsibility, they'd blame the engineers. Better to just not risk your career and reputation in Alberta.

Alberta has allowed significant interference and lobbying from hydrocarbon industries to create a significant problem and believe the solution is to continue working with the same idea.
Alberta produces significantly more emissions than ON, QC and BC despite having a lower population.
If the federal mandates are not meetable, work with them to alter them and create a doable plan.
Shutting down the conversation is insanity by definition.
Solar is already a higher ROI for energy production. It’s fiscally and environmentally irresponsible to continue with natural gas or coal.
To those thinking that upgrading the grid will result in higher costs, consider that AB has had energy rates between 16.7cents/kwh and 32.4 cents/kwh.
In ontario, there are different pricing models that people can choose from and all of them are lower than the ranges alberta has had the entire year. worst case scenario, ON has a peak at 28.2 cents but the important part is that this is during on-peak hours where effective charging is much lower and can go as low as 2.8 cents.
ON has lower price minimums and maximums while having a cleaner grid servicing more people over a larger land area.

Hey everyone. Just want to chime in and say that power bills in Alberta cost, on average, $20 more than they do in Ontario. Alberta water utility costs are on average nearly $40 cheaper.
Alberta citizens pay an average of $342 a month on utilities, including electricity, gas, water, internet, cable, and landline service.
Ontario citizens pay on average, $370 a month on utilities, all of the above included.
Tell me; how does a $20 difference in average monthly bills constitute what essentially amounts to a panic move from the Alberta government?
Well, according to people in the comments it's because people having to pay $20 more a month in utilities are being forced out of their homes because utility costs are exceeding monthly mortgage payments.
Did you know that the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers blames rising power costs in Ontario on the fact that they produce too much electricity from renewable sources? The power situation in Ontario is due to provincial mismanagement.
I personally feel that if Alberta let go of their intense reliance on fossil fuels and utilized renewable energy, AND managed it well enough to avoid the missteps that Ontario has made, they'd be well on their way to the cheapest electricity rates in the country.
Will they do that? No, probably not. The current plan is going to line not only Smith's pockets, but the pockets of all her campaign funders as well. She doesn't care about the affordability of power for the average person, because she isn't the average person. She has an income far above what the majority of us can hope to obtain; power costs don't concern her when she's the one earning money from those costs.

In Alberta electricity costs 24.175 ¢/kWh
In other parts of Canada it's as low as 7.3 ¢/kWh.
Making a single national grid shares the load from every power producer to every home. Multiple smaller grids just makes it more unreliable and inefficient.

@@TexanIndependence Greetings from the Lake Whitney/ Central Texas region. Yours is a tantalizing proposition
Likely LPG development would strengthen Alberta's provincial govt to where it can stand on its own without Ottawa. No doubt this opportunity is what motivates Premier Smith to step forward.... A union with Alberta, Saskatchewan, & B.C. could be a strong economic union, & a strong currency too. And if we could have a union from the Great Plains States all the way down to Texas, that would establish leverage & economic independence for a non-federal currency of our own. We have been overdue for a revolution for many decades now. The long reign of corruption must end. And this would do exactly that
