Back in the early ‘90’s, I lived in Austin, Texas. A favourite shop there was a very high-end audio recording equipment store that featured many of the top brands. One afternoon, I was sitting in a chair with a hot coffee and a very distinguished gentleman sat down beside me. I did not recognize him until he introduced himself as Rupert. Of course, my excitement rose considerably and then spent the next hour with one of the 20th Century’s foremost geniuses. His intellect and warm nature were rather overwhelming and the experience was truly a hi-light of my Life! God speed, Mr. Neve. A truly remarkable man!
I recently watched "Sound City" a documentary by Dave Grohl about the legendary studio which in a way centers around their historic Neve 8028 console. Highly recommend it for anyone who missed it. It was a fantastic watch covering some incredible rock and roll history that took place at that studio including the formation of Fleetwood Mac and the recording of their debut album, Rumors (a sonic masterpiece imho) and many other amazing albums. The neve console takes center stage in the last part of the film when Dave records an album on it with some of his amazing friends. ;)
My grandmother had two of the Reproducers up to just about twelve years ago. Her dad brought them over to the states when he moved from Chingford. I've wanted Neve gear forever. Not having money is no fun. I would give anything for a Neve Genesys console. I would give more for him to still be here, designing.
Thank you Warren for a beautiful tribute to Rubert. I met him a few times and he really is one of the most gentle and generous geniuses of our time. The console he built for us in Montserrat was the best sounding console Geoff Emerick & I had ever heard. (I was off camera there when Sting jumped up and walked across my faders - yikes!) Mike Stav
I went out to dinner with him 4 days, and he told me many anecdotes and how grateful he was to God for being who he was! how shelving eq was discovered by accident! very good vibes sir !!!
Wow, I didn't know Rupert Neve had a recording van! How cool! It's really interesting to learn about those early products too, as well as how Neve got to where he was. Fascinating! Thank you for this video, he will definitely be missed.
Back in the 80s, “when I worra lad”, I worked for local radio. They were using the Bcm10 desk. That picture brought back some happy memories of when I was first introduced to a desk, with all those buttons and knobs and Vu meters. Then I was educated on a guy called Rupert Neve who invented the desk. I was shown all sorts of tricks it could do, I still have the reel to reel tapes of the mixes I made, adding all sorts of effects which sounded amazing but were relatively simple to achieve.
I only just recently found out that I lived only about twenty minutes from the town in which Rupert Neve lived, which is Wimberley, Texas. I do truly wish that I could have met him, but I believe I will someday. What an amazing mind to have created so much timeless benchmark equipment! Thank you so much for honoring this man and his enormous contribution to the professional audio world.
i own a Rupert Neve Headphone amp, the RNHP, wow what a device, sounds like no other headphone amp i have tried, gives the user a feeling of perfect reproduction allowing the space and depth from the source recording to stand out......genius.
I love my RNHP. I thought it was amazing with my 150.00 cans. Imagine my bliss when I added a Schiit Biftost II and Senn. HD800s Toss in some Logic Pro or Amazon lossless music. Whoah.
My mixbus is two Portico IIs into a Looptrotter. I live in Austin and everytime I drove through Wimberley, just a bit outside the city, I'd say good day or even Happy Birthday to Rupert. Not in person, never met him. Just being in the same city was enough to give thanks.
Loved your feelings on Rupert Neve, definitely an Icon of our musical lifetime, Rupert will be missed, and yet all the GREAT music that was using his designs proves his genius!

The 1073 style preamp. I've owned some vintage 1066s, 1272s (which are similar), and currently the Warm Audio WA73 clones...all of them are fantastic. Also I'm a huge fan of the 2254 compressor.

A true legend, that will surely be missed. His analogue audio pre-amps have helped shape and colour to many hits all over the world! R.I.P. Rupert Neve 😎
What a beautiful and loving tribute to a man that was as you said the most influential designer in the professional audio industry. His genius designs hopefully will last for a long time. Sadly units such as the 1073 etc. had components and transformers that although can be substituted to very close specs of the original are not exact matches. At one point discrete components will become very rare if not non existent so hold on to any NEVE units you may have (clones or original). As a member of the DIY community I decided to do a 1084 circuit into 1 PCB. I used as close to original components and in the end the unit sounded glorious. The fact that the circuit still sounds that good even with substituted parts (albeit almost same specs) is a testament to his genius. Lastly if one watches or reads any interviews with him one quickly realizes above all what a gentle person he was.
The 5153 desk from ‘77. Good god, literally the best and my favorite console I ever recorded on. You didn’t even need to engage the EQ or inboard compressor most of the time, the mic pre’s would pretty much do all the work for you.

A friend of mine is Rupert Neve's great-nephew. He remembers visiting him when he was a child and having to be quiet whilst Uncle Rupert was "working", which normally involved him sitting in an armchair with his eyes closed, working it all through in his head. Genius. Very sad loss. 😔
Thanks for putting this together Warren. His influence will be felt for generations to come. I'm finally at a point in my career where I have 12 channels of Neve 1073 preamps.
