Just watched all of Act 3 of this DVD production...can only say that by this point in the opera I was completely engrossed at the captivating and committed performances of all of the singers but I was most especially impressed by Wotan (John Tomlinson) and Daniel Barenboim's conducting. A truly superb rendition.....
@thewagnerworld I have now re-watched this opera twice and am only more and more impressed by it! The sets, the singing, the emotional intensity brought to this most glorious music by all involved.....it's astounding
What pleases you, does not please me. Production standards will come and go, but the music will live on, unscathed.
aren't you the chap I was talking to about the Levine performance? I actually really like the production in this scene, as I think that it does maintain the right atmosphere for the music. I think Wotan's costume is brilliant, with the alligator skin robe and half-aviators. might one call that a deconstructive take on the old eye patch? although I found Siegfried's costume to be a bit bland. you can find my comments in "ewig war ich..."
I don't get the negative comments about the clothing! Haha, I think it's quite an interesting get up, kinda fun. If you look at the likes of the Copenhagen Ring, we should be thankful that this version was only modernised in terms of costume and setting. It could be so much more offensive. I love this version, anyway.
I've just watched the first three operas of this production and would have to agree. Singing, acting, Barenboim just fantastic (although I also think the beginning of this final scene was too slow.) I probably would have preferred a traditional production but overall Kupfer/Bayreuth beats both Chereau and the Met.
I actually really like the speed here. Most versions of this go a little too fast for me. That fortissimo in the brass is just amazing at Barenboim's tempo, but tweech their own.
Nevermind the clothing! In the WALKÜRE Wotan is pretty fucked up. He is no longer a God but a slave to the law carved in his spear. This is indeed a unique staging of his farewell to Brünnhilde who tried to fulfill his wish but had to fail.
@windstorm1000, yes, travesty, ( I know it ), I have the ring of the MET ( the best traditional ), 1991, but, I,m stupid ( no offense to nobody, it,s not my desire) if I buy other traditional ring, then I buyed this ring, too . Of course, I respect to some1 if have 2 or 3 traditionals rings
Superb singing. Dreadful staging. How can you pay homage to every note Wagner wrote, and ignore his most specific and copious stage directions? Beats me.
what an awful performance of the magic fire music. barenboim has the orchestra playing as if practicing separately in different rooms, not a coherent whole fo fire. the production on the other hand looks incredible. if only the music matched
Beauty beyond my words
I just love how Wotan in this version has bad ass shades.

I, too got the impression that the music was somewhat fettered from having to be timed out with the stage effects.
Barenboim gets the tempo here just right. Too many conductors go way too fast for me when they get to this part.
A pesar de lo lento de la música al final, me gusto como representó el actor el papel de Wotan. Aunque se parecía mucho a Snake Plissken
@jjpalomino Go to amazon. You'll find it there (Wagner,Die Walkure, Kupfer). You'll see a big red ring on the cover.
1.25 speed for proper tempo.

The most important music here is in the harps, and you can't hear them at all.
@LeeKatherine20, I possess this Ring and for me it,s marvelous
Hipnotic
really? I thought Barenboim's conducting was legendary... Do you think it might have to do with hearing it through youtube?
@LeeKatherine20, yes, you,re right,
@jgesselberty True.
cheesy staging, but very good orchestration and singing
lmfao he actually does

wardrobe fucked up big time
This picks up in the middle of the piece and therefore has no value. It's like walking into a movie and hour late.....
