CESSNA 150 PROJECT EPISODE 3 : PAINT STRIPPING AND PRIMING

- In this episode we finish patterning the boot cowl for the left side, patch a big hole and a previous poor repair job on the fuselage, paint strip the fuselage and wings and begin priming the inside of the fuselage. Apologies for the long gaps between episodes, we wish we could get them out quicker. Being first responders the pandemic didn’t give us any extra time to work on the plane. She was busy flying medivac with the extra uncertainty of how to transport COVID patients and I was helping my company prepare for the inevitable fire season which we find ourselves in full swing now. Long story short we are still making good progress and will continue to make videos as long as people are enjoying our project. Again sorry for the long wait and enjoy Episode 3.
I love watching this and shake my head at how many hours of work that goes into it. It would be great to see the finished plane.
Periodically the bar for human ability inevitably is raised. I would hypothesize the ingenuity you’ve shown on this project is exhibit A of that theory.
I bought a 58 172 straight tail last year and am just now getting around to starting on it. Watching this vid is both inspiring and tiring at the same time. ;)
Nothing more satisfying than to have to stop and peel all the rivet heads off your drill bit and then the sound when the rivet tail pops out of hole.
Any updates? Appreciate the attention to detail and doing things correctly!
I was so excited to see this in my feed. Its been ages, but it's great to see the progress.
Thanks, sorry about the long gap
I had forgotten about you guys. Glad to see you're making good progress. Thank you so much for bringing this to a former A&P who can no longer work at the moment, but has a passion for all things aviation.
It’s guys like you that we learn from, when we have a question we ask someone who has been there and done that. Or one wanders in and wants to hangar talk. I hope you can get back to your passion!
I love this! My first solo was a 150, so it's nice to see the deconstruction and build back up. Thanks!
My first solo was in a 150 also, I haven’t been in one for years and I’m longing to get back to “simple” flying just for fun.
I want to make a plane it's all my dream
As a A&P for 52 years and a AI for 45 years, You made a project enjoyable and with very GOOD workmenship and Girlsmenship, it shows, Nice Job Well Done.
Thanks that means a lot!
Great video. I have a C-150L project to do soon. Enjoy your videos very much, hoping #4 is coming soon
Been waiting for this!!
Glad to hear it
Great work you two are awesome. Thanks for sharing this with us all 😁👍
Ditto. Glad to see the updates. Keep up the great work!
Hi Mike, an excellent update, really informative. I am starting to understand why aviation is expensive! Good luck with the rest of the project, and both of you keep safe with the hazardous day jobs. 👏👍😀
Thank you
Thank you for the update and I hope you are both well and safe!
Awesome you guys great work beautiful airplane
Enjoyed the process and style of video. Looking forward to next installment.
Can’t wait to see this when y’all get done
I was just thinking about you guy's project a couple of days ago! Glad to see another video. I would love do what you're doing! I've done cars and boats but no airplane, yet.
Why not go for the trifecta?
Glad to see you're back at it!
Thanks!
Acompanhando aqui de longe esse maravilhoso projeto de vcs. Forte abraço! Itamar. Brasil
Hey, we also have a "45T" Cessna! Ours is a '59 172. Really enjoying the videos.
Great work. Would love to see an update!
I like the jumpsuit, flip flops, and tight bun look - that's my favorite outfit to wear too.
OH I get it now, I was trying to work out what "Medeval" was in the handwritten font. its Medevac ! Great video!
A bit of an abrupt ending, after watching the first and second - assumed I’d jump right in to #4… oops! Great work so far, looking forward to the next 👍
This was enjoyable to watch. Why did you stop the videos?
Awesome videos, the time lapse really shows all the work that goes into this. Thanks for taking the time to put these videos together. Keep up the good work.
Thank you, trying to get those videos out more often and build my editing skills at the same time. Thanks for watching!
Where is the video where its now flying?
I was glad to see you using the Hobby Air mask and the HVLP system. I've built 20 experimental's and rebuilt many factory birds and can tell you that the Hobby Air full mask and the HVLP were indispensable in every project. Most of my work was with PolyFiber, some Stewart system too and a few full metals birds as well. The C150 you are restoring looks great ... are you planning to overhaul the engine or just fly it up as is? Looking forward to the next video ...
Where is episode 4. Have I missed it?
Any news on the project?
Just found your vids. How many in the series as I don’t want to miss one. Really jealous as I just get to work on airliners and would love a project like yours. PS A&P don’t wear skirts to work. Ha ha
Haha some wear skirts
Hey Mike, Nice work on the 150. What paint stripper did you use on the wings. I am planning on stripping mine and then polishing. Thanks!
Mike, Any updates? Would love to see how it is coming along.
Any updates on this project? Would love to see the progress on the restoration.
Can you tell us why you decided on an external doubler vs an internal one? Was a fuselage frame in the way? Great video, great teamwork and great friends!
There was actually an internal one as well. Needed one on the top because there were numerous holes drilled in the skin (almost 1/4inch)... I have no idea why. Plus the large hole (maybe a previous beacon) we did the top patch to cover all those holes and to tie into the coin repair for the large hole. It was the cleanest way to keep it sealed so no water would get in. Trust me we went round and round debating the best way to go about it.
Hello , does paint stripping affect the metal on which it is used ? Could it cause fatigue ar any weakening ? Thank you .
Did you guys split? Who got little bird? Is it done?
How's the 150 coming?
Any video project updates? are we all done and flying?
Thanks, for posting, I have a cessna 150J model I am stripping the wings on, do you have a link to the Eco Strip you used?
Dumond smart strip, we were able to pick it up from our local paint shop which is a Benjamin moor shop.
@@mikebristol6466 Okay thanks!!
Any more updates on the airplane?
Hi Mike - These videos are great! Thank you for making them and sharing with others. I was wondering if you had to acid etch or do any prep prior to priming the inside of the fuselage?
Thank you! Yes we did do a surface treatment before priming but for entertainment value I didn’t show it. I have done a lot of acid etching and alodine in the past, and still do on small parts but we used a chemical called prekote. It doesn’t etch but it is a conversion treatment that’s water soluble and provides a film of positive ions that makes the paint adhere (if someone can explain it better I’d love to know more). We use it at Wings Airways on the Otters and it does great and those things basically bathe in salt water so I expect it’s good enough in this application.
@@mikebristol6466 Thanks for the detailed response, I'm looking at doing a restoration with a 172 thats been near salt water. I look forward to seeing more of your videos! Cheers
It really just depends how much corrosion there is 😉
Do you have a link for that tool to locate holes in the new skin? I could really use that!
Lookup Aircraft Tool Supply and search “strap duplicator” for the size hole you want to find/drill. They have a ton of different applications and a super cool tool.
@@mikebristol6466 excellent, thank you!
@@Ts-zy4bw those things are a life saver sometimes. get a short one and a long one for the size you need.
i want to work with you guys!
If I had a million $ I make an offer for that 150 that you could not refuse,That is my favorite plane,When I win the lottery I'll look you'll up cause that is got to be mine.lol
Jamee's day job is a Lear 31, What?????
Why the external scab patch / doubler? I mean... it’s only a Cessna, but still...
Only a Cessna? Oh for crying out loud 😂
The airframe has numerous holes drilled in that area (no idea why), no pattern to them and too large to fill with rivets, plus the large hole needed a coin patch. It just made sense to do I that way to keep it cleaner and to keep the water out
A thin layer of Semkit 1435 between the doubler and the aircraft skin would ensure it being water tight and added protection between the doubler and skin for corrosion. Other Semkit products for other applications available.
We used 5200, same thing we use when we do repairs to floats. I’ll look up semkit thanks.
QUE PINCHE MUSICA Y VOLUMEN EXAGERADO A LA BERGUE
music sucks
WHAT ??? No more videos??
