EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 2004 - My Top 36 (With comments)

  • I mentioned quite some time ago what I wanted to do in the future, and one of those things... was going back further into Eurovision's long history and cover years before my last milestone of reaching 2005. In other words, my goal is to make rankings of 2004 and years prior!
The 2004 contest of Eurovision was the first to take place in Türkiye, in the city of Istanbul. It was also the first year where semifinals were introduced, but not in the format we know today. Instead, the 10 best performing countries in the results (including the winner of course) the year prior got an automatic pass to the final, while the other remaining countries that weren't among those or the big 4 (Italy didn't compete at that time so it was just 4) had to duke it out for one of ten slots remaining for the final. This meant the final consisted of 24 different songs instead of the 25/26 of today as well. The addition of the semifinal also meant that the previously used regulation rule was abolished, meaning all countries didn't need to worry about sitting years out if their previous result wasn't good enough.
The 2004 contest was won by Ukraine, achieving a first victory with Ruslana's 'Wild Dances'. Serbia & Montenegro debuted and finished in 2nd place with Željko Joksimović's 'Lane Moje', while third place was claimed by Greece's Sakis Rouvas with 'Shake It'.
A total of 4 countries debuted this year, those being Albania, Andorra, Belarus and Serbia & Montenegro (which later split into two with them competing separately in 2007).

I had to reupload the video due to the first one looking very pixelated and low-res.
Anyway, the good news is that I will continue going backwards in Eurovision's lifespan and cover more editions of the past! Starting with 2004 (as 2005 was the last one I made two years ago) I will keep going back at least until 2000! My hope is to go back all the way to 1990, but I won't make any promises

The year I was born! It's actually a very mixed one, with some really good songs and some questionable entries. While it gave us masterpieces like Lane Moje, the start of what would become can already start to be seen here, imo.
My top 10 would be (keep in mind this things tend to change a lot between some songs for me):
1- Serbia and Montenegro: Zeljko Joksimovic just can't make a bad song, can he? Personally, this one is not my favourite of the Balkan ballads he composed for Eurovision, but it's still really good!
2- France: For me it's a laid-back ballad with a happy message that works. Might also be bias because he added Spanish lyrics at the end in the live version Xd (He was Belgian with Spanish parents, thus his Spanish sounding surname and the reason he used the language)
3- Germany: Best German entry of the 2000s and 2010s for me. It's really got a vibe, and manages to not become forgettable like most recent German entries
4- Ukraine: Deserved winner, even if it's not something I would find myself having this high. I don't know, everything just works really well and it stands out
5- Iceland: Agree with this not sounding the best it could have live, but I still think this is an amazing song (as is 2012)
6- Albania: A great debut indeed. Something about it feels very 2000s but in the good sense
7- Cyprus: I wish Cyprus would send some ballad again, they were so good at it when they did, with this one being their best one (and my favourite entry from them)
8- UK: It's a nice, somewhat cozy song, that I feel I'm putting too high, but I just can't put it lower. I feel like it represents the spirit some countries were starting to take at that time, though (send songs that aren't bad but have little chances to stand out)
9- Croatia: Good song and voice, that's already enough to make something great at Eurovision, and this is a good example of that
10- Belarus: I have a similar thought to you on this one. The vocals totally ruined it, but I feel like it's really different and I find myself liking it despite the vocals. And even though I like instrumental music and songs with much instrumental, I feel like I haven't heard any other song that sounds similar to this one
