One must imagine Sisyphus having a good take on leftist streamers
As someone who watched Sisyphus 55's video, his overall point of how consuming political edutainment without direct action and the problems of being complacent with that consumption is actually salient. Sisyphus also makes sure to give respect to Vaush and Hasan. So overall, the video is a pretty good faith critique that conveys the message of how consuming political content is not the be all and end all of political activism and that it's important to mobilize one's audience into direct action. Overall, a pretty solid good faith video about Leftist Streamers for once.
shit is the guys name sisyphus? i was thinking "holy shit, that's a smart and amusing comment." I'll choose to believe it was as i imagined it.

Both Vaush's and Shaun's videos are what pulled me out of the GamerGate anti-SJW pipline. Specifically, it was Shaun's "Sargon of Akkad can't Read" video and Vaush's second debate with Sargon. Being shown in multiple formats that a guy I used to watch daily had no idea what he was talking about was eye-opening for me.
Vaush's videos have helped me come to terms with so many concepts (especially about gender and socialism). Videos like the one being reacted to have only ever bored me.
It's sad because I used to watch Sisyphus's videos, but it looks like he's become addicted to the smell of his own farts. That seems to be the trend with youtubers obsessed with sounding philosophical and academic
Okay but vaush functional isn't a socialist at all. So I'm not sure what you've learned about socialism from him. Fictional he's a social democratic, believes in markets and advocates voting for a bourgeoisie party. You can't dress that up as socialism.
Functionally*
@@killerskiely100 You can vote to prevent harm in national elections (which is the best you really can do in the US) and advocate for more socialist outreach locally. They're not mutually exclusive.
@@killerskiely100 you really have to consider what you're talking about. what happens if you actually convince most leftists that we CAN'T vote democrat because "it's the system, man." if the republicans get in office ever again, **we're getting a dictatorship**. you have to fight that, yes, even if it supports the corrupt dems. we can't get socialism if everyone is so apathetic that they just let fascism take root. i know it's sad, but you have to work both in and outside of the system, and an abstained vote is literally sitting on your ass and doing nothing. vote, convince everyone you can to vote, even if it's a red state, and _especially_ if you're fortunate enough to live in a swing state. this will be a valuable skill you're gonna have to learn to recruit people into the revolution anyway, so you might as well get a head start.
and like. republicans don't want you to vote. why? imagine a nazi bursting in your house and demanding your gun, and you're like "whatever, i wasn't gonna use it to defend this shit country anyway, and what's a single person gonna do against the full might of the patriot military." like. what? obviously they want to take something from you because they don't want you to have it. _why don't you care?_ doesn't that mean anything?
"believes in markets" is such a fun line too. obviously you don't have to get fully into every critique you make but. markets exist. you can step outside and see one right now! and you can use them for good! like sure, a che guevara t shirt is just cyclically moving capital, but you literally can't abstain from capitalism in this society. even if America suddenly becomes socialist, it still has to work within the international market until THOSE countries catch up.
so what do you mean "believes in markets." taking money out of your pocket and putting it in the hands of the underprivileged is a good thing! philanthropy is just a bandaid, but i'd rather mr beast give random homeless people thousands of dollars as clickbait than not at all! half-steps are still moving in the right direction! stand up! get the fuck up! get moving!! do something!
@@killerskiely100claiming to be a socialist does not require you to larp. We have to navigate the world as it is.

The ultimate irony is making a video that says nothing with the intent of calling out other video makers for doing nothing. For someone that claims to be opposed to meaningless information, they sure do leverage it a lot.
Beat me to this exact comment.
Well said. I could not have said it better myself.
This main really called truth, a concept which has been challenged very heavily as of late, a stable concept💀
I'd bet $20 that this man hasn't seen the inside of a social science classroom in his life.
@@aegisScale He didn't call truth a stable concept, he defined it that way for the purpose of his argument. When he says "truth", he's referencing stable axiomatic beliefs that underlie our political positions, not what is commonly considered to be true or not (which, btw, has been very heavily challenged _for all of human history,_ not just as of late).
Please explain how he says nothing? Did you listen to the video? like what
I had an adjunct professor who spoke like this all the time. He ended up getting fired because even the other professors couldn’t stand the way he’d spend 30 minutes saying absolutely nothing
Are you describing Jordan Peterson?
My social problems professor is literally the most boring professor I've had in college so far. Which sucks because sociology is a topic that I know for a fact that I find interesting. But it's to the point where I'll walk in 15 minutes late and learn that I've missed literally nothing.

Yeah, I mean the guy is basically demanding you be as uninteresting as possible, even as repulsive as possible.
I like most of Sysifus content, but Vaush said it right in the start. Some leftists fall so hard into internal critique and purity that they lose all hope of actual advocacy or impact. You get the feeling that they will NEVER approve of any attempt to better the world ever, and that they can gather some theory to critique whatever position - and that being their MAIN activity.
Yes, you feel called out when watching some of these, because they all argue that what you are doing (like consuming, supporting political content) is bad or pointless. But it isn't. Every persons attitudes, thoughts and actions matters politically. Being a member of vaushes audience, commenting on his vids, normalizing leftism online, going out in the world with ideas from here, what you buy and don't buy, say and don't say - it all has social impact, and therefor political impact. Even if small.
Yes, it's good to organize, write for newspapers, demonstrate, vote - but online content arguably is one of the most powerful platforms to spread and promote ideas now, and leftists need ALL the online support it can get.
So sick of leftists being like "everything leftists do online is bad, not good enough, pointless, and I can intellectualize why". No, bitch, it DOES matter, it's good, and even if it isn't perfect, it's good, effective and important.
Same I usually like sisyphus content. Its an overall great channel, but this video came like a surprise to me. Never heard him talk about this before, this isnt his type of subject imo. I agree with your statement a lot. The productivity of left leaning streamer gets questioned when people try to gatekeep leftism (Purity) bc it creates a lot of drama and his video just goes in that direction as well and its not helpful. I think one of his mistake is the generalization he makes about internet making people apathic, which is, I believe, not true. Internet also makes it possible to see things you would never encounter in real life and provoke thoughts and realization that better your perspective on the world. Since its a virtual world, theres a distance between you and the information, making it possible to be introspective and having an opinion far different than if you experienced it firsthand.
People really should be aware how the current pervasiveness of the alt right (and the right in general) came from their strong and big presence on the internet during the 2010’s. That’s not something that should be ignored or underestimated.
It's called learned helplessness
So few leftist didn't fall into internal critique and purity that it is more accurate to say ALL leftist are only worried about critique and purity and are therefore useless.
Exactly, I really like Sisyphus’s videos but this is such a self-defeating attitude to have, yeah no wonder leftism loses when you have idiots like this!
What I find weird about this being directed at live streamers specifically is that a lot of the critiques being made, especially around the 8 min mark where he's talking about a cycle of drama being perpetuated and dedicated to discussing whether a 'person belongs on the left' at the expense of 'real politics' is what *essayists* do to Vaush and to an extent Hasan.
Love how you pretend as is Vaush doesn’t do that to others. He calls everyone to the left of him on US foreign policy either a Nazi or a “tankie” lmao

He even ends the video by basically saying "Yeah, anyway, I don't do any organising irl because it's hard"
I bet this guy hasn't done any concrete action. Not even something like changing his diet for health or giving up bad habits. I hate sounding like Jordan Peterson, but if you can't make simple changes to improve your own impact on society and grow individually, then you are probably not going to act in a way that is more meaningful than whinging online, which is definitely better than nothing, but yeah.
What I hate is that this video idealizes the Doctors/Nurses working during Covid but doesn't mention how they were overworked, understaff, and constantly ridiculed. All of which was preventable.
id say it’s worse than not mentioning it. the reason healthcare professionals were criticized was because of the opposition’s analogs of his targets.
right wing streamers, essayists, influencers, and talking heads were 100% responsible for the covid conspiracy-and thus covid’s resurgence due to delayed herd immunity.
Well that would mean to actually engange with the issue, and that's not something the video essayist wants to do. They want to use em as an argument, nothing more.
I also couldn't understand what the fundamental difference between committing yourself to a cause and what the doctors were doing (throwing themselves to the cause of public safety, and also trying to keep their jobs while megacorps were killing them with it but we've already established overlooking that part to idolize the whole thing)
On top of that, he acts like the healthcare professionals aren't bound to their jobs like the rest of us. Sure, there're a lot of selfless people doing good in during the pandemic and that's commendable. Still, it's a stable source of income (severely underpaid) in a economic crisis for anyone not rich.
He reminds of all those people clapping and praising health care workers, but ignore their cry for help: starvation wage, inhumane working hours and conditions, work trauma bc equipments shortage etc.
It makes me sick.
For it to BE "Preventable", the status quo would need to change.

I used to edit newbie writers' works and this was an issue I came across a lot. The first and foremost thing to remember when communicating is to actually get your points across. If the other person doesn't understand, it's your fault for not making it understandable. Now, different audiences need simplification to different levels, and sometimes you have to use more complex words for accuracy, but knowing big words doesn't make you a better communicator. (Sorry for the rant, just wanted to get this off my chest 😆)
You'd think with this dude's obsession to style over substance, he'd make an effort to not record his voice over in a telephone booth

Hee, Hee, Hee, Good "Don Rickles Diss" !
The minute someone starts talking about what is and is not "enough" I know they aren't a serious person and should be ignored. Vaush is right that "if it isn't 'enough' it isn't worth doing" is suicidal and the only conclusion to be reached from that premise is that we should do nothing other than criticize those who are doing things because those things are inevitably insufficient. Nothing is ever "enough". "Enough" doesn't even mean anything.
The eternal experience of activism is being chided for "not doing enough" by people who do nothing at all.
Doing anything at all, just a few hours a week, puts you ahead of 90% of people.

Say it with me kids! Politics is about NORMALIZATION.
Optics isn’t just important, it’s the primary method of turning normies into allies. Those allies are more likely to protest in favor of your cause. Those protests are more likely to get your cause discussed on mainstream media. That media is more likely to ask politicians about your cause, and sympathetic politicians are more likely to put your cause in their campaign promises. Saturate American discourse with your cause enough, and a politician might write a bill, that then becomes a law, and your cause has succeeded!

Not gonna lie, I thought at that midpoint false ending, that he was going to do just that.
jREG did something like a couple of years ago. I don't remember the title, but he's got a video where he starts off describing some philosophical or sociological idea outlined by a professor he studied under in college, and then reveals that he'd actually made the whole thing up, including the professor. I think he finishes by pointing out that there's a good chance nobody would ever have caught him if he hadn't exposed his own lies, and how that ought to make us rethink how we relate to the medium.
Something I learnt in a health and social care course that I think could apply to politics is how important it is for healthcare workers to not use medical jargon around patients and their families. When trying to relay important information to the general public you need to phrase things in the most easy to understand way while still getting all the key information across. Using jargon, in this case academic jargon and highly academic concepts, only serves to communicate less information to those who actually need the information. If you're speaking to a group who could reasonably have the same understanding of your reasoning and language, then go ham. But when you're speaking to a group of people who havent had the same education as you, you need to express these concepts in a way that is easier to understand. If the average patient is told that they have peripheral oedema, they arent gonna know what that means, so instead doctors say ankle swelling. Same rule applies.
Very weird that he would talk about corporate capture of media, and also talk about how bad social media is for political discourse, and THEN bring up the war in Ukraine as an example of "only knowing about something in theory" as if Dylan Burns literally livestreaming from Ukraine is less "real" than seeing a 12 second clip on MSNBC
Livestreaming a war makes it not more real. Media is never neutral. Look at the Iran war when only wounded US soldiers got media coverage.
They really underestimate the influence media has on attitudes toward topical discourse to begin with. A lot of people are pulled in and out of the far right or bigotry they had, as easily as following people who can convince them that they are wrong or dont really believe the things they had accepted that brought them to the right or far right.
They also really ignore that the right wing's main arm of influence is media. Everything they say is usually a lie they want people to believe that benefits their funders politically. Its why they wanted Twitter, the biggest social media platform of the last 2 decades to lean more right wing and accept more far right propaganda through Elon, yes grifting is their incentive for money, but they also need reach to have any influence. Their effects either changes people or brings more opposition to them for it. You cant influence attitudes without reach.

Notice that after Vaush said "nihilism" was a useless term because everyone used it to mean something different, several people in chat immediately responded by saying "Nihilism simply means X" and gave SEVERAL COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ANSWERS about what nihilism meant. This proves Vaush's point completely, thanks chat.
The most sophisticated taxonomies of theories of value and morality have been developed by contemporary analytic metaethics. Contemporary analytic metaethicists rarely talk about "nihilism," because it refers to too many different things. Instead the discussion is usually of more specific-ish theories, such as "moral anti-realism," "value subjectivism," "normative error theory," etc., where there is a better sense of what the terms actually do and don't mean.

The real red flags started to go off the moment this guy started talking about "truth". When guys like this say "truth", they mean truth in the sense that religious people do - the ability to see through the false physical world into the "true" spiritual one. In the same way, when he says truth, he's talking about seeing his place in the world and the "true" mechanisms by which it works.
i'm not too sure, i thought it was more connected to the existentialist ideal of authenticity, and just actually physically experiencing things rather than being stuck in the abstract world of ideas. that aligns more with his views as far as i can tell.
Funny how he criticizes streamers for using juicy topics to get viewers when most of the views and attention he got from this video came from click-baiting Vaush and Hassan's faces.

Is this Video Essay a Final Assignment for a College Course? Jeezus...
All of Sisyphus's videos are like that. He basically took a philosophy course in college and thinks he knows everything there is to know
I like to think people like this aren't just dumbasses failing to understand effectual theory, but instead immature dingdongs who don't understand the difference between the scholastic environment and the real world. They're both independently critical to a fully functioning adult, just like Vaush kept talking about taking action vs knowing what to take action on.
He strikes me as a barely out of HS dip who hasn't actually gone out to see how the real world operates, more than he strikes me as an intellectual gooner. Is he intellectually gooning? Yes. Though it seems more like the type of ignorance of, "racism would be fixed if we just stopped talking about it so much" more than he literally wishes to quiet people down.
His background in philosophy and psychology really aren't helping him with that political analysis...
Does anyone remember the Vlog Brothers making a recent call to Johnson and Johnson about their awful TB patent bullshit that was going to kill people, and they called on their community to flood their lines to make them do something different and they actually DID?

I think the funniest part is that, given how media is these days, the revolution probably would be livestreamed.
At 34:30 there is about 10 seconds of black screen without sound. For the editors to take notice. Thanks!
Man, Vaush is really leaning into the dadcore drip. I can vibe with that.
Also this just serves to support my theory that most of the folks who make anti debatebro/streamer content have no real clue what they're even supposed to stand up against. It's always either vague gesturing (like this one) or ascribing aspects of the online left they disprove of to them, whether it's appropriate or not. My KINGDOM for a good hitpiece!
I agree there are problems in streaming culture, especially in regards to politics. Streaming is a career and it serves to offer up and produce content surrounding a given topic, which inadvertently might have an affect on how the real world effect is processed. It also groups up audiences who tend to agree or disagree with a streamer mainly because of the personality of the streamer. But here's where I think this is beneficial. It allows constant awareness of certain issues that occur at all times with people to offer up their say on the issue and create spheres of conversation around the issue and thus can raise the awareness for everybody. It's also a space to gain new understanding on issues that would otherwise remain as a news headline or broadcast with no guidance on how to read the world of politics.
I think that's right - what happens is that you feel like you'd want to know what Vaush or Keffals or Demon Mama says about something that's been in the news, and you end up thinking about it and pulling it apart more than you would do if it just went by you as a news item or headine.
It’s insane how the right has had cartoonishly large wins through the internet, and this guy says we should get off the internet lol
I honestly got some reactionary vibes from that video. His idea of "truth vs abstract" screams of anti-intellectualism. It's a page right out of Andrew Tate's book, claiming that data can't override his own personal experience. And this puritanical notion of action and play being directly at odds, the idea that only suffering can motivate people to action, it's all right out of the fascist playbook. Now maybe I misunderstand his arguments, but that's probably because his arguments are incoherent... which fascism also is.
If he's concerned that people are spending too much time on the internet and not enough doing real work out on the streets, he could just say THAT and identify the real underlying problem which is internet addiction and the ongoing mental health crisis. This is a clinical problem, not an existential one, which he seems to want to treat it as because, judging from his name, he probably views everything in the world through the lens of Camus absurdism. And I love me some Camus, but it's not exactly an analytical framework that can be used to assess real world problems in practice.
No, his name is Sisyphus because he likes big rocks. Not camels
Exactly. if his argument is that people need to touch grass and they need to get the hell out of their house, not sit in their rooms doing nothing, that's a different social problem. The ultra alienation of the internet era that results in people know nothing about their neighbors and don't even have coworkers to talk to is not vonch's problem.
Honestly sisphus has had some good video essays, and i love the use of the classic, "the revolution will not be televised" but its not a great video lol

@@ThunderHOWL16 It doesn't disappoint me, I think it's all very accurate. It's not surprising that Vaush feels so attacked though given that his whole personality is built around his ability to debate random people (not Scholars or specialists) on stream.
This thing kinda sounds and reads like someone's final project for a college class. Where you're told to pick a topic from a hat, choose a style, and make sure you include quotes from all the assigned reading you did throughout the semester.
It's the same over-dramatized, flowery, religious-feeling language that Peterson and friends love.
In university I was friends with a fellow who had studied Marxism extensively, Kant, Hegel, the whole mix of influences. It was a completely new set of ideas about the way the world might work to me and I had trouble grasping it. He tried to live according to Marxist ideals as well and routinely criticized my capitalist mindset. Anyway I thought I grasped the theory intuitively at first but found my initial understanding of it sorely lacking and its application to be complex and nuanced. Decades later I still don’t understand but do see how it can be applied in ways that can lead to bad outcomes or to further agendas far from its ideals.

It's hilarious how these holier-than-thou anti-action video essays are so insubstantial that Vaush is left giving middle school-level lessons on how to make arguments in order to respond to it.
I love the idea that we only now value "information over truth".
I mean, first of all, people have always preferred information, even in the middle ages people were definitely not obsessed with having to experience everything themselves but just believing and participating in random hearsay about their neighbours, nobles, other countries, history, nature etc.
Also, I think the fact that he brought up Ukraine and police brutality as examples are also really interesting, because...who would want to *experience* any of these two rather than *know* about them? It is so obvious that any sane human being (with the exception of Dylan Burns maybe) would rather only know about horrible things like these instead of having to experience them. How is any of this a new phenomenon?
Imagine writing this script and reading it and thinking yes, nailed it, I've communicated a very clear and meaningful message in a concise way.
This was me faking my way through a forum post about quantum mechanics during my masters, trying to turn the 84 words I understood into 150 of my own words, while trying to distinguish my fakery from the 10 classmates who had posted in the previous 90 minutes. Passionless mast*rbation at the altar of the compulsory knowledge, with nothing to be gained except the freedom of the time thereafter.
It's like these people think there's a law against putting out a 2-minute video saying "I think streamers are privileged and waste our time and that direct action is more useful because ..."
It's not Vaush's fault that I'm too lazy to go to political meetings and demonstrations. I was gonna not do any of those things before I started watching, too! As long as streamers aren't getting in the way of direct action, there's no point in calling them useless except to add to the supposed uselessness.
So his argument that political youtube videos don't change things is being made... via a youtube video on politics? Great argument 10/10

Also think it's a bit odd that the person talking about achieving something in the real world is mostly interested in psychoanalysis theory. But no, this essay has nothing to do with Vaush, it's just that putting up pictures of vaush and Hasan makes people look at it (it sure made Vaush watch it, right?)
