  • The Rockshox Reverb dropper post on my Santa Cruz Hightower has the dreaded squish and sag. How do you service this post and fix it?! How much does a full dropper post rebuild cost and what do I plan on doing about it?

    I have a reverb myself, i love the feel of that hydraulic lever(which doesnt make life fun when disassembling). When the post was under warranty the previos owner sent it in for a rebuild for free! I think you should be able to do that too...
    Nevertheless about a year later it had the plague again, this time i did the rebuild myself. I just followed a video from "Butter Suspension on yt. (you only need some basic tools and like three special tools and oil for like 50 bucks maximum) Squish never came back again...NEVER pay for suspension rebuilds, the tools are much cheaper than a shop doing it.

      I'm actually processing the warranty with my local shop right now. Sounds like it will go through! I agree with doing your own service, but these posts shouldn't be failing at this rate! Having to rebuild a pretty new post is really annoying (whether I do it myself or send it in). Thanks for watching and for the comment!

    I completely feel you! My 2020 Devinci Troy was spec'd with the same thing... after a year, I paid the money to ship it and rebuild it. Now another year later, I'm back in the same place. One Up dropper post, here I come.

    I bought a Santa Cruz Tallboy. Had to bring the post in 3 times while under warranty for the same issue.
    All I did today was adjust the post 1/4" and now a 3" squish. SRAM hydraulics suck.. I've had issues with their squishy brakes for 15 years.
    I can't agree more with your position on this!

    I've had over a dozen different bikes with Reverb droppers both stealth & external routing. Regular maintenance & service I've never had a problem. I do agree that the hydraulic is the weakest point of the Reverb, but also that plush feel is nice. I can also recommend the Thompson dropper & the OneUp

  • @Trixter45
    @Trixter45 2 года назад +2

    I feel you bro. I used to have a Stealth Reverb with a 1x lever upgrade and a Connectamajig that is suppose to last 3 disconnects before a rebleed. First disconnect and it went squishy and very slow to extend. End up, I rebleed anyways. It was ok for a while but when I went for a bike holiday trip to Australia during the winter, the thing won’t extend at all. I read an article somewhere that the cold temp can affect the Reverb mineral oil’s viscosity and will tend to fail. I live in a tropical country by the way. I went back home to a warmer climate and lo and behold, the Reverb worked fine. I had 2 options, sell it dirt cheap or throw it in the trash. I still managed to sell it at a fraction of its original price. I recommend a Oneup V2. Very reliable at any weather conditions.

    You should get a PNW dropper post and lever. Super reliable, easy to work on, and lifetime warranty. That’s what I’m going to get when my Reverb poops out on me. I just bought a new Santa Cruz as well. I will say the hydraulic lever feels way better than any mechanical one I’ve ever used, but for a slightly better feel I think I’d rather just have reliability.

    • @jeremyprovonsil7886
      @jeremyprovonsil7886 Год назад +1

      I came here to say this. 3 Reverbs, all worked good until they didn’t. The cost of a PNW Loam isn’t much more than the cost of a Reverb service for those who don’t do it at home, which is still a hassle. Two PNW’s on two different bikes and couldn’t be happier. Cable actuated and needs minimal servicing (anyone can do it at home!), never gets slow in cold weather, no squish, lever is buttery smooth. Just in case anyone is considering the switch.

    • @GifZafred
      @GifZafred  Год назад

      Absolutely Jeremy that's exactly what I did. My newest video posted is on the PNW post I got. It's fantastic. No hassle at all. And you nailed it, my bike shop said just buy the PNW over spending about the same money on a Reverb full rebuild from SRAM.

    I put a Reverb C1 on a new build last year. The squish started Withins the first few rides. And using the air bleed tool does rectify it for maybe a couple of rides then it returns. And dismantling and resetting the seat each time is a pain. Eventually decided to return the item before the warranty runs out. My other bikes have the Brand-X dropper posts fitted, a third of the price and reliable and I’ve ordered another for this bike.
    SRAM need to get a grip of this, as it damages the brand. I don’t know anyone with a Reverb who hasn’t got this issue.

    • @GifZafred
      @GifZafred  2 года назад

  • @christeschke9844
    @christeschke9844 2 года назад +2

    Bonus to the rock shox, it's rebuildable. Cartridge ones are not. But SRAM will keep selling a broken product. Just like SRAM brakes, DOT fluid that leaks everywhere. With the Dropper it's the AIR/Oil seperation peice that has been redesigned 4 times. The brakes it's the levers that have not been redesigned much since the Juicy's , but still suffer from the same problems of stuck pistons. If OEM companies choose these parts, tell your dealer you cannot choose these companies.

      I don't think I said it was. I just think a hydraulic lever is unnecessary and overly complicated vs. a cable.

  • @TheOffCycle

    Or spend $50 for the rebuild kit. The “issue” is that air passes into the wrong area BECAUSE it needs to be serviced.

    • @GifZafred

    I love people like you- I've bought a number of droppers and have them on my bikes and gave some to friends. Its an easy fix with minimal tools that takes 35-45 minutes. I figure the engineer in you is suffocating if you didn't even have the curiosity to try take it apart and fix it.
    And guess what, the squish has zero to do with how it is actuated, the two systems are completely isolated from each other.
    When these do fail, at least they can be fixed rather than the sealed cartridge units that have to be completely replaced.

    Thank you for making this video. Since the beginning, I have been fighting my rockshock reverb on my 2020 Hightower C S. The post was sent to SRAM twice! The first service didn't fix anything. REI actually paid for my second full service (super nice), but it has failed after 6 months. The post failed to go down, and I nearly hit a tree, which could have been a lawsuit. This post has ruined multiple rides, so I'm considering the one-up or bikeyolk. Don't be surprised if the post fails within a year after service.

    • @GifZafred
      @GifZafred  2 года назад

      Wow, Ryan that's crazy. I didn't have quite the experience you did. I would sell it and get a mechanical post. Check out my next video on the PNW Loam Post. Get that or the OneUp post that you mentioned. I think the bikeyolk is still hydraulic which is unnecessary in my opinion. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I hear you , Rock shox really need to get on top of this issue or just take it off the menu. ive recently brought a megatower had it for 5 weeks and absolutely love it however I’ve just been out to chatel for the last week and my dropper post went swishy, I took it to one of the mechanics in town and they immediately new what the problem was but would have to order the bits in which would take a few days. I’m going to get it sorted under warranty but now it means I won’t be able to ride for at least a couple of weeks and it’s already cut my holiday short . So I’m definitely going to get rid and get something more reliable. Santa Cruz should definitely go else where for dropper posts it’s not good enough
