    • @djm4854
      @djm4854 Год назад +10

      @@secretsquirrel7374 There are a few differences. First, community colleges have smaller campuses, which also means less staff and less course variety. Second, universities tend to get a great deal more funding due to the size of its student population, alumni (who often donate), and sporting teams. Third, you cannot receive a Bachelor's degree from a community college, which is often required for job opportunities; you can receive an Associate's degree at a community college. Also, community college degrees can be completed in 2 years, as opposed to 4 years at university. Most people attend community college and then will transfer to a university to finish their remaining two years, saving themselves a great deal of financial distress and time.
      In the end, though you can receive a decent education from great professors at a community college, it's still recognized as inferior to university standing by the social majority, even from a hiring standpoint, and so, often university completion is more highly desired.

    • @fexbio
      @fexbio Год назад +6

      Problem is their rather narrow definition of intelligence. Because society awards a few capabilities more, these people think they invented the brain.
      Engineers are a good example of that. People who have competence in learning advanced math think that makes them better because they can design bridges and engines and shit, but a lot of them have linear thought and have a hard time seeing the big picture. Not to mention engineering in the real world involves a LOT of trial and error. I mean, a whole lot. Ever since I worked at a infrastructure company, I feel very uneasy driving over bridges and under tunnels.
      This friend of mine goes about how philosophy is useless while being painfully unaware of how society basically has its every social structure thought or improved by a philosopher.

    Okay the community college one is pretty funny but going to a CC doesn’t mesure your intelligence. It’s a cheaper route to get an associates degree before transferring to a university with guaranteed transfer credits. I think a lot of seniors should consider doing this, I’ve gotten a lot of financial aid (haven’t had to pay for school so far), and professors are really understanding in times like these when it comes to extra help and time. :) but that person was being hella cocky

      Yeah, I hate that too. People always look down on students in certain schools without regarding that they may not be financially capable of getting into an allegedly "better" school. I say allegedly because I have experienced the standard at both poorer and richer schools, the only real differences is that the wealthier schools tend to have better infrastructure and funding, but when it comes down to the teaching skills of the professors I find the cheaper schools outperform on average. Maybe it's because the lecturers put more effort in, or dont let their ego/prestige get in the way of learning. I dunno. But that has been my experience.

    regarding the IQ test, it's even more complicated then that. As a child I scored over 135 on an IQ test for the gifted program and later at age 20 scored in the 92nd percentile for IQ again. What these numbers really allowed my doctors/teachers to see was that I required further testing because while it was clear I was very clever, I was struggling with a lot of learning issues. I was given multiple tests over many MANY years which confirmed that I suffered from learning disabilities because certain skills that should score similar had vast different scores. For example in Grade 6 I could read and comprehend English at a university level but my ability to spell was at a grade 3 level. Same with Math, while I could understand higher level problem solving, thanks to dyscalculia often my basic arithmetic was wrong. IQ tests pretty much just compare you to your peer group and give a basic idea of how high or low you're functioning in comparison but there are far more involved tests to actually find out what skills you have, what you might have deficits in and if those deficits are extreme enough to classify as learning disabilities. While I loved being in the gifted program in school, the number of times I'd go to get support for my disabilities in the special ed department and have to explain to other students you could be both "gifted" (cause the entire school knew who we were) and have learning disabilities was sometimes a weekly occurrence.

      Thanks for saying that I considered myself less intelligent for having learning disabilities for a long time. I could read college level books in middle school but developed very bad math anxiety and just couldnt do it, i also have ADD. While I am not super intelligent i think its important to say that just because you cant do math or struggle with english it doesn't mean you are stupid. I think Albert Eistein said 'Dont judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, or it will live the rest of its life believing it was stupid' (i have crappy memory so it is 99% possible that I mixed up the person who said it and the actual words 😅 EDIT: Einstein didn't say it it has been falsely attributed to him. Recently I posted a beautiful photo of five male dancers leaping into the air in a perfect pose, I compared their perfect bodies to works of art created by DaVinci. I got a really snotty response that I mentioned the wrong artist, that I must have meant Michelangelo because HE painted the Sistine Chapel. Okay, but that's not what I was referring to (I never mentioned any particular work of art). I had just read an interesting article of how DaVinci actually dissected and studied corpses to perfect his drawings of musculature, so I posted that article to show him what I was talking about... his response? .

      I feel like generally it's a byproduct from their parent instilling that in them. The number of times I've heard a parent exclaim their 3 or 4-year-old IQ as being over 150... Without them realizing that a3 or 4-year-olds IQ test is highly inaccurate and likely to drop off to normal range by the time they're a teenager because of how IQ's are calculated. Meanwhile their child's getting saturated in this idea and they're probably going to be ruined by the time they're a teenager as well. Kids that are told over and over that they're so smart tend to not try and have a high rate of failure because of it. =\ then the poor kid as an adult feels like a failure because they didn't reach everybody's expectations. When in reality they probably would have been fine if their parents haddn't obsessed over it.

    By the way, Charlotte. I speak English as a second language, and I think native speakers are more likely to not learn the difference between things like "your" and "you're". We learn to speak and write at the same time, and because English doesn't pronounce things how they are written, we pay attention to differences. However, native speakers spend the first years of their life hearing only spoken language, hearing people say "yoor" and "shudv", and once they learn basic writing, some have arrogance to think they have nothing further to learn, because "our mother language", and thus, surprisingly, never learn. And, yes, when you keep hearing "shudv", often sounding like "should-f", and don't think about it, you're going to assume "should of" is perfectly reasonable.

    Interestingly enough, to expand on the point Charlotte made about having a high IQ meaning you should be good at language, too - she's right. Languages are surprisingly a rather mathematical thing (grammatical structure can be compared to mathematical formulae). Furthermore, I believe that there are studies that prove that langauges, music and mathematics belong to the same part of the brain - due to patterns being picked up. So, yes, someone with a high IQ should be able to spell that correctly. Either way, bragging about your IQ is just... gross. No one cares.

    • @Laura-ec3wl
      @Laura-ec3wl 3 года назад +4

      For most people this would definitely be correct. However, people with dyslexia also exist who could have a high ID score but are bad at spelling and/or are reading relatively slow. This means that not all people who have a high IQ score can spell correctly. The same applies for people with dyscalculie that are therefore bad at numbers/math, but are good at language/spelling. I do agree that bragging about the IQ is not necessary and I also think that it shows insecurity in oneselves.

On the whole, most of the Ivy League degrees that have actually been earned are the ones that scholarship kids or kids that worked their way through have earned. It's a sad state of affairs that people assume because some douche canoe says "I went to so and so.", it means they are brilliant. More often than not it means their parents had some cash. On the flip side, if you are in community college, you have to earn those grades or you get booted.

    About those IQ tests: usually they are divided into three groups: mathematical skills, language skills and dimensional imagination (like turning a 3D object in your mind to properly complete a puzzle).
    That is because different skills are governed by different parts of brain. Or brains, actually, since we have two - left and right, commonly called hemispheres. Anyway, left brain is the more "reasonable" one, while the right is the "creative" one. So, only the right hemisphere can come up with a beautiful poem, but only left knows how to put it into words...
    Also, truly intelligent people don't go around boasting their IQ test result...

    • @JanKowalski-rd7yb
      @JanKowalski-rd7yb 3 года назад +2

      @@kadenhiggins9338 Yeah, there's also a difference between IQ and EQ. Serial killers are known to be highly intelligent, while their Emotional Quotient is often extremely low, otherwise they would not be able to hurt other living beings. Empathy is what stops majority of people from hurting others. Children often hurt small animals (like insects) not because they're "evil" , but because they're emotionally not fully developed, all the while their IQ may be already naturally high.
      Also, as to Charlotte's video, I forgot to mention that there's a difference between intelligence and knowledge. Average, hard working man can be more knowledgeable than a lazy genius. So yes, one can be very intelligent and illiterate in the same time. Autistic people are known to be unusually intelligent, yet often they can't manage simple day-to-day chores. There are examples of world renowned mathematicians and physicists, who don't know, how to make a sandwich...

      Usually I am on Neil's side as well, but he was being a bit of a pompous ass on that one. Think of this: How often are the Olympics in the same spot? Would you say it's rare that they are in the same city? Well it's rare that a total eclipse of the sun happens in the same city for a person living in that city. Just because a total eclipse happens every couple of years doesn't mean we all get to see it as a total eclipse every couple of years. Most of us are lucky to see 1 or 2 in a lifetime. I consider that rare. It is estimated that they recur at any given place only once every 360 to 410 years, on average. Most of us can't jetset around the world to witness a Total Eclipse like Mr. Tyson.

The reasoning was that it is a difficult language bc the written and spoken form is so different and the lousy education system.

    In high school, I had a friend a grade lower than me (we had choir and gym together).
    Here is some relevant back story: I had transferred high schools because I moved from the city to the suburbs (for reference, I live in western NY). I had gone to a performing arts school in the city where we got more credits towards our regents diploma for our major. So, I technically had enough credits to graduate with a regents diploma half way through my junior year, but I still had to meet "NY States requirements". I dropped out towards the end of senior year after I had turned 18 because I had a terrible year. My uncle who basically raised me had died of a massive heart attack in January and I was very depressed and had a lot of suicidal ideations. My assistant principal told me that I was going to have to repeat the year because I missed too many days. When I got my report card at the end of the year, I found out I had passed all my classes and should have been allowed to graduate. But, anyway, I got my GED a year later.
    On to the story with my friend. A couple years after I left high school, she got me a job with her at a call center where we would take calls, answer questions, and enroll people in Medicare Part D the 1st year it was available.
    A few months after being there, they offered a "licensed insurance agent" position. They paid for our classes and the test. My friend told me how hard it was supposed to be and I shouldn't bother taking it because she was smarter than me and there were only 50 positions available so I shouldn't waste my time. I decided to try anyway. Even though I had undiagnosed Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and I had a hard time being exhausted constantly, I went to those 6am classes 5 days a week for 2 weeks.
    150 of us were in those 1st round of classes. You needed a 70 to pass the insurance exam. Well, guess what? In the 1st round of those 150 people. 7 people passed the 1st time taking the exam. I passed. She did not.
    I have since taken the exam 3 times to re-up my license and have passed all 3 times. The last time I took it, I got an 84.
    It took her 5 times to pass the 1st time.
    I just love when people underestimate my intelligence. I might be crazy, but I'm not stupid.
    Edit to add: I ended up being promoted to what they called a "SME" (subject matter expert) and I eventually became a POD manager (essentially, I was a team leader). I love telling this part of the story, because even I was impressed with myself. When we enrolled people in a plan, we had to read them a disclaimer that was one page, front and back, and they had to agree while we recorded them. I could read the entire disclaimer from memory while notating their account and people would stop and watch me. I'm surprised I could do that because my brain is not that sharp anymore. I had managers who would have to come to me to ask questions, that's why I was promoted.
