Lanza could have been an opera singer if he had chosen to do so. In my mind he was the best ever. I was a teenager when he became famous. There has never been anyone like him since. He was simply wonderful.
Yes, he sure had the voice for it, one of the greatest natural voices of all time, but perhaps he chose the best path for him to great fame, it takes more then just voice for the opera, to be and stay on top, that said he had the voice to be one of the greatest of all time in the world of opera. Mario Lanza was one of the GREATEST opera singing tenors ever! He sang two performances in Madama Butterfy at the New Orleans Opera in May 1948. Before that, he made his opera debut as Fenton in Otto Nicolai's The Merry Wives of Windsor (in English) at the Berkshire Music Festival in Tanglewood on August 7, 1942. None of us have heard most of the opera singers in this video in live performances so the only way to compare their voices is through the records that the have made for us to enjoy. There haven’t been such Three contemporary great tenors as Gigli, Bjorling and Lanza. They were indeed like three Angels each with his characteristic. May I say, Lanza is like Michael, Gigli like Gabriel and Bjorling the loving Seraphim! I love all three and all three were of the Bel Canto school.
The movie "The great Caruso" is loosely based on Carusos widows memoirs (although MGM put a lot of nonhistorical nonsense in it). And as Dorothy Caruso looked upon Björling as the true successor to her formidable husband, MGM asked him first - but the negotiations came to nothing in the end as Björling had a very busy schedule with concerts and opera performances.
A date Correction for the information above about Lanza . The first movie film he made "the Midnight Kiss" was from 1948 (not 1949) yes, the Toast of New Orleans was from 1950, I saw it that year at age 10!! The opera Butterfly where he sang the complete role of Pinkerton twice in New Orleans, was in 1948 at age 27, Lanza was a semi classical artist, with a naturally beautiful voice . When your talking about Bjoerling and Gigli your talking about two of the greatest operatic tenors in their time in major world opera houses.
My error above, ( It's That Midnight kiss) I had said "The" The movie also had in the cast the excellent classical pianist Jose Iturbi and of course Actress/ singer Kathryn Grayson
Hardly. He had movie star looks and an expressive face. That's why so many are enamored of him. He had a beautiful tone, but Björling's tone was just as beautiful, and, it was even throughout from top to bottom, unlike Lanza, who lacked the discipline to train for hours and hours on end. He was lazy. "Learning operatic arias and performing them is much, much easier than learning entire operatic roles - generally the most rhythmically complex music, the difficult ensemble moments, are the hard parts to learn -- and it is the discipline, or the will, to do that that Lanza lacked. It is unfair to singers who mastered that learning process to compare them as total artists with someone who sang the big tunes in movies and an occasional recital, but couldn't be bothered to learn an entire opera. "That he was gifted with a beautiful natural voice, that is certainly not in question. What he lacked to make him a great opera singer was dedication and work ethic. He had none. He became a big star in the movies and made recordings. Everyone sounds great in the studio. He never had to do the daily grind of learning roles, performing, being consistent and having to put out day after day without constant retakes. When you are on stage, you are totally exposed. I’m in the music business so I have been fortunate to know people who actually worked and sang with him - legitimate opera singers. Most of those whom I have spoken with (a few are still alive) say the voice was gorgeous, but it was not large, limited in volume and certainly not the bronze instrument we hear on recordings. And he was a difficult person, a spoiled brat (first by his family, then by the studios until they had used him up) and it got worse as he got older. That being said, he has brought joy to gazillions of people around the world, has made music lovers and opera lovers out of many people and in that I guess he succeeded. Now if he had a real work ethic, pursued a serious operatic career, studied assiduously every day,, the voice would probably have grown in size and power for the operatic stage." Donald Levine.
@@eileenhetherington3704Cruel words but its the sad truth. Gigli and Björling much superior to Lanza. Also you can hear his shortcomings in this video.

❤❤❤ sfo😢😮😅😊 salute to my favorites singer Mario Lanza !
Великолепно!👍👍💐💐💐🏛️🍀
There haven’t been such Three contemporary great tenors as Gigli, Bjorling and Lanza. They were indeed like three Angels each with his characteristic. May I say, Lanza is like Michael, Gigli like Gabriel and Bjorling the loving Seraphim! I love all three and all three were of the Bel Canto school.
Mario Lanza e Benjamino Gigli me iniciaram no canto lírico há mais de 60 anos e o vício ainda hoje dura. Foi uma bela surpresa. Obrigado.
Beautiful
Geweldig dat dit allemaal bewaard kan blijven. Thanks

Спасибо🙏💕 за 💕😍прекрасный подарок🎁
genios
Bjørling er vores favorit her i familien ❤️
köszönöm szépen a csodálatos dalt!
Con todo el respeto por la opinión de @shicof.
Mario Lanza, además de tener una brillante voz, era hermosa.
Thank You For This Great Great Compilation
Three Great Tenors But For Me Mario Lanza Without Any Doubt Number One
Lanza, the best of the best in all times.
Hardly. He had movie star looks and an expressive face. That's why so many are enamored of him. He had a beautiful tone, but Björling's tone was just as beautiful, and, it was even throughout from top to bottom, unlike Lanza, who lacked the discipline to train for hours and hours on end. He was lazy.
"Learning operatic arias and performing them is much, much easier than learning entire operatic roles - generally the most
rhythmically complex music, the difficult ensemble moments, are the hard parts to learn -- and it is the discipline, or the will,
to do that that Lanza lacked. It is unfair to singers who mastered that learning process to compare them as total artists
with someone who sang the big tunes in movies and an occasional recital, but couldn't be bothered to learn an entire opera.
ML always love you Aria's ❤❤❤❤
