Excellent documentary, I remember the excitement of watching the progress of construction week by week. Even now 25 years on this is still a structure that takes your breath away from whatever vantage point whether inside pleasure beach or on the promenade.

Went back to Blackpool in '23 with my three daughters, the first time since my last visit that was the Big One's first week of operation, and it did not disappoint, worth the admission price alone, but there are so many other awesome attractions at the Pleasure Beach to enjoy. A must visit, end of. Blackpool gets a lot of negative reviews nowadays, but I honestly do not for the life of me understand why, it is an awesome holiday destination.

Not been on the Big One for so many years, which is a massive regret, but I'm committed to going next year. I rode this the year it opened when I was 28. Not too long after, I met my wife, and life got in the way of riding rollercoasters. Through the internet and fabulous documentaries like this, it has spurred me on to re discovering the thrills and excitement of these engineering marvels, and can't wait to experience that mighty big drop again in 2021.

Great video guys. My first memory of the Big One is being around 4 years old and seeing my dad go off onto it in around 1998. I remember the buzz and excitement around the coaster, and it worried me at the time even as a kid that he was doing something that seemed so big and scary.
We used to visit Blackpool every year in October for the illiminations, and I remember staying in the Kimberley hotel a lot, which is a bit south from BPB. At night you could very very clearly hear the lift hill noise from the hotel room, and I loved it - that noise has stuck with me forever!
And as soon as I was tall enough to ride it, i've ridden it every year since. It's not the biggest, the best or the smoothest, but it has a huge amount of character and the unique seafront location adds so much to the ride. BPB and the UK wouldn't be the same without such an ambitious coaster - it makes me really proud to be British.
Only somewhere like BPB would be ambitious enough to build the worlds tallest coaster in one of the worlds smallest parks!

Great video. Lot of fab interviews.
I was 11 years old in 1994, I had just ridden Nemesis a couple of weeks earlier and recall approaching the south entrance and standing below it and looking up. I had been riding rides and coasters since I was 3 years old and just looking at it scared the living crap out of me. I got on and was made to ride in the back. My family were/still extreme thrillseekers. I closed my eyes for the first time and only time in my life, I got to the top opened them and never looked back. I have to say I am not a real fan these days and does not provide anything past the first drop for me really. Still it created my love for Arrow, coaster engineering and it still looks stunning today.

i remember my parents driving me there around 10/11yrs old just before the park opened the season. I remember looking up thinking wow how big is. there was guy go around on it none stop, think he was doing a Guinness world record. I couldn't pick the balls up to ride it till early 2000s I think the crash on it put me off. but since I love it but I feel like its a bit rough these days.

I used to be a big one hater, but now I’m a big one fan. I rode twice in October 2016 in rows 12 and 13 and found it rough, dull and pointless. However upon re riding in October 2019 3 times in the front row and I found it to have a brilliant ride with a unique magic I just can’t put my finger on. I’ve ridden hyper coasters by B&M and they are undeniably a better ride but the Big One holds it’s own as one of the most memorable coasters I’ve ridden. My improved ride was partly down to me sitting in the front row, this had the benefits of less speed entering the banking for the first drop which would otherwise brutally slam you in the rear of the train. And you get a nice pop of airtime entering the mid course brake run. Also you have a wonderful view of Blackpool and the track ahead. Also I find your experience can be greatly improved by the way you ride, I find that if you press your knees firmly against the inside of the lap bar to steady yourself, hold on tight to the hand rail, stay tense and braced and try to anticipate and lean into the corners as if you were riding a bike. I have proof this riding technique works as my brother who was next to me who didn’t do any of these things found the ride very rough and jolty. I’m interested to hear if anyone else has a certain riding technique for the big one?

I remember seeing it getting built on park in 1993 and i'm sure there was a christian cross sat at the top of the lift hill, maybe a signal for us to say our prayers before the drop! I first rode it in 1994 and it was a night ride, probably my best moment on a coaster ever. I remember queuing up the ramp with the lights working above and at the side of the path which looked fantastic, and I was genuinely feeling quite anxious to ride it but also excited. Eventually got on the ride quite quick considering the size of the queue, probably due to it running 3 trains. But I remember going up the lift hill and all I was thinking was what the hell am I doing? How are we going to get down to ground level in about 2-3 seconds and survive!? Yes there's hardly any air time but it was and is just so fast and enjoyable. The true Icon of the park and even though Icon is a better ride, the Big one is the most famous. Icon didn't really stand a chance with the GP located to that monster of a structure, my sister actually didn't bother with Icon when she went last year because "it didn't look very good" :-( Great documentary though Scott, enjoyed it and it brought back so many memories.

30:19 I remember the chasers extremely well from the very first trip there in October 2002😁
Oh God I wish they would do something with the pull-up and the station roof!
At least Icon's LED strips compensate for the fact PMBO's ones are long gone.

Pleasure Beach Experience indeed, I know both the strobes and the twinkling LEDs have now been removed from the pull up, whether that means they'll trial anything else up there only time will tell🤷‍♂️
If they do it would be great if they could program them so they could chase in the same way the old chaser lights did.

Great documentary . Very interesting . I have ridden it once in 2018. I was quite nervous and excited going up the lift hill . It’s a pretty rough coaster especially that first drop turning to the right . The cars really lurch forward hard and jerk hard to the side. The rest of the ride is a moderate bone shaker . Although after watching this I’d like to ride it again .

It flew around . It’s my favourite coaster now . I love the first drop . And the last bit through the tunnel is pretty intense

I still remember taking my daughter on for her 1st time, I think it was around 2007 - went in the park with a mate and he had his daughter with him and they said they were going on but my daughter was a bit hesitant, my pal and his daughter set off to join the queue while me and daughter went for a drink near by, after a bit my pal etc hooked back up with us and my daughter finished her drink and just blurted out - RIGHT before I change my mind I want to go on the Big 1
Queue wasn't that bad but from the 2nd we got inside she never said a thing and was clearly now having all those thoughts in her own head, after the ride she was buzzing that she had done it and wanted the photo etc for back at school for the bragging rights.
I've always been an adrenaline junkie and she's got my DNA, when she turned 21 back in 2017 I wanted to mark the date by doing something rather than some gift, I never told her until the night before and her face was priceless, we drove up to St Andrews and done a skydive from 10.000ft
So far that's been the best buzz for pure adrenaline until I can think of something else.

      @dougbriglmen716 5 лет назад

Becca Cairns yeah me and Sam Shepard were talking about the Dmeg last October that need sorting out/ replacing as well!
I know last season they painted one of the supports or Northpark outside the Grand National so I have no idea if that had stress cracks as well🤷‍♂️
They can't afford to lose the big one really lose the big one and the place is finished, obviously they're not in a position to replace it with another 200 plus feet coaster and anything less than that would just be seen as a downgrade replacement.
That's why I think they can't afford to lose it really, so that's one of the main priority is finding the money for it.
