      @@JohnnyVectorWell! friend, if I tell you also as a fan of bubsy the first bubsy was extremely better than all its mediocre sequels, but I could say that the 2 was not as mediocre as the one for atari jaguar and above all the 3D, bubsy 2 even with the controls schizophrenics who remind me of zool and jazz jackrabbit had more of an edge than the first! I used to consider POF bubsy! nice only for having brought back all the old characters from the pilot (even if oblivia is missing) bubsy TSWB was neither good nor bad but it was simply boring and repetitive but everything else the first one was undoubtedly the best!

    What annoyed me about the modern Bubsy games ar that they're literally asset swaps of other games, Paws on Fire is Bit Trip Runner, and Woolies Strike Back is Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams. If they could make a genuine original Bubsy, and also hire someone that has a sense of humour to write it, then he still could have a chance!

    I will say, the Bubsy games may be a huge mixed bag, but the music in most of them is cool. People rag on it, but I feel like these soundtracks have some underrated jams. I actually legitimately enjoy the zany music in Bubsy 3-D's first level, sounds like something you'd hear as background music in an old cartoon or a '90s educational game. And the water level music in the Jaguar game is such a weird, almost DOS-like song, but it's honestly a super infectious bop. I would never *choose to* make a song like it, but I respect it as an individual.

    Interesting history about Bubsy. It's like you said, Bubsy had potential but lacked a good direction on how to create a good Bubsy game.
    You mentioned that Rob Paulson voicing Bubsy and voicing other characters from the Animaniacs. You mentioned voiced Yakko, but he did not voice the Brain, he voiced Pinky. The Brain was voiced by another actor - Maurice LaMarche.

    I have absolutely no nostalgia for this game so I feel a little mean saying this, (but I've also played plenty of other platformers I'd never played before on the 16 bit consoles that I felt were fun). Bubsy just feels so frustrating to play, just like you said in your video, you go too fast too quickly and walking around is slow and tedious.
    If Sonic is a race track, where you build up speed and feel like you are drifting beautifully around the stage, then Bubsy is an RC car being driven in a maze. No way to build a satisfying sense of momentum. Just smashing off the walls like a wasp trapped in a box

    • @JohnnyVector
      @JohnnyVector  3 года назад +6

      I agree, Sonic is so satisfying, Bubsy is the opposite. Without nostalgia goggles, I don't think I'd be able to see any merit in the original!

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 3 года назад +8

      Every sonic clone suffered from this. They didn't realise what made sonic so fun. They seemed to think that one hit deaths and having unavoidable obstacles everywhere in a game about speed, was a good idea. Even a regular health system doesn't work for a sonic style game. Sonic is basically invincible as long as he has rings
      And it's something Christian Whitehead said was the key to fun in sonic games. You can have slow platforming sections, but you've got to intersperse it with speed sections that aren't dangerous and you can speed through at full speed without any obstacle in your way. It's like tension and release. Tension from hard slow platforming sections, then the release and the relief of the fast easy sections
      Every sonic clone tried to make it about speed but then literally all the levels you had to tip toe through very slowly because you'd could so easily die from anything. Especially in Bubsy. If you build a fast character, you've got to build fast levels for then to speed through
      The Donkey Kong Country series is the only sonic style game from that time that understood this and built the level design around the abilities of the characters. These days, the new 2D rayman games also understand this and have created fantastic sonic style games. But yeah back then only DKC understood good level design for fast characters, other than the sonic games

    • @novelezra
      @novelezra 3 года назад +1

      @@duffman18 Great response and I couldn't agree more about DKC. It's interesting you mentioned DKC being like Sonic since Miyamoto is not a fan of DKC as far as I can tell. I wonder what he thinks of Sonic? Probably thinks it was also just style and no substance.

      @@duffman18I KNEW IT!!! every platform that runs fast must necessarily be a rip-off or a clone of Sonic, and like that time on paws on fire when bubsy had the shoes, guess who they compared it to? SONIC! or awesome possum that has ramps on here fly when he slides on the sides, they are always from SONIC! now I imagine that if we are still in 1993 and I create a skateboarding game with an anthropomorphic animal and there are ramps and sides that make you go fast it must be a fucking SONIC RIP OFF!!! because if sonic has something, NO ONE should have it, NOT EVEN A RAMP OR A CIRCUIT! have you ever compared a mascot to other mascots without that and sonic? NO! THE DEVELOPMENT HOUSES HAVE THEIR OWN MASCOTS THEIR OWN GAMES AND EACH ONE HAS THEIR OWN STORY, that the development houses that invented those mascots and those games that broke their fingers working day and night to create games for you, instead innocently you went crazy on Sonic's side, killing them without any PITY AND TO RIGHT OUT EVEN CONSIDERING THEM A RIP-OFF! and now as mascots this year there are only MARIO, SONIC, CRASH, SPYRO, LINK AND POKEMON! THIS IS WHY I MUCH PREFER THE OLD MASCOTS EXCEPT FOR SONIC AND OTHERS!!!

    I just want to know, why does everyone hate Bubsy honestly? I can understand he’s a rip-off and everything of like Sonic or something, and can be annoying and everything, but still, why? Rob Paulsen hated voicing him for the 2nd game and cartoon and etc.
    Is it like an ongoing joke to hate the character or something? I absolutely LOVE the character in the first two games, he’s cute, his personality, and I’m not usually into the sarcastic characters at all but the way they brought him back for those two new switch games and the way he breaks the 4th wall and everything HILARIOUS! It’s VERY unlikely as he’s hated but I hope we can see more of this Bubsy in the future…. (The deleted lines that didn’t make it in the first Switch game are on here and he’s hilarious saying so many different things, it’s too bad the cutscenes and everything were so limited for those first two games so he never got to say much, honestly we need characters like him back more than ever these days, you really don’t see these types of things for characters these days anymore, he kinda has that old cartoon feel to him that you barely see these days to me, he’s witty, sarcastic, funny, breaks the 4th wall, etc. he reminds me a bit of like Yakko Warner and even unfortunately HE was toned down so much for the reboot, so we didn’t get to see his original self like the original show, but Bubsy is kinda like a newer version of him, bringing all that back, Don’t know how he can but Yakko can’t…
    But anyways, honestly if people just give him a chance, I think he could make a great comeback kinda like Rayman is about to again… It’s really too bad the creator went through all that and continues to get hate for Bubsy these days by fans…

    • @HamiltonAppiah
      @HamiltonAppiah 4 месяца назад

      ok, first of all I'm a fan of bubsy, second, bubsy besides the fact that he is a fast mascot like sonic his games (except TSWB and POF!) are completely original and different because bubsy has his own things while sonic has Sue, both are fast animals but have a completely different story! the hate for bubsy comes from bubsy 3D and jontron himself!
      if bubsy had screwed sonic then why are there still people (like me) who love bubsy? And why didn't Sega report Accolade for having ripped off Sonic who is its official and only mascot (poor Alex Kidd) or Nintendo since many idiots say that it also ripped off Mario as well as Sonic? but at least you know what ripping off means?

  • @Xindictive
    @Xindictive 3 года назад +3

    Hiya. This is a good look into Bubsy's history honestly heh, and this is coming from an unironic Bubsy fan (yes, actual fans still do exist).
    I will mention that the bit about Bubsy 3D's sequel is incorrect. Bubsy 3D 2 was not brought up by/to Sony, but instead by Accolade. And this was DURING the development of Bubsy 3D, as Richard Ham, the designer of the game (and yes, the guy who also brought in games like BRINK and such), said that Accolade made them make both a sequel AND a 3rd game called "Jumper" while in the middle of creating Bubsy 3D. Jumper was shelved almost immediately, whereas Bubsy 3D 2 was shelved and cancelled not long after, however this would basically explain the cliffhanger ending Bubsy 3D has with it's "good" ending.
    While i agree WSB wasn't great, i even found it to be rather soulless back then, i will add that WSB is basically more than 50% of the assets from Black Forest's previous game series, Giana Sisters, and that 3 months before the game was released, THQNordic bought Black Forest Games, meaning more than likely no more work could be done on the game. It got so bad that Black Forest doesn't list WSB anywhere for themselves and go completely silent over any comments about Bubsy.
    POF was not so much, infact the developers didn't even use the same engine that the Runner series used, instead actually building the game from scratch for the most part. What WAS the problem however wasn't so much direction, but budget with both WSB and POF. Billionsoft and Tommo were definitely at the time experimenting with what to do with Bubsy, even using the Twitter account to figure things out with the audience's help and views, however after the marketing put into WSB, POF had barely a budget, to the point that one of the reasons the kickstarter even happened, with such a big amount, was so they could even afford to PUT that much into advertising and such, as they were just barely able to even have physical releases of the game after the fact for cheap and the game had little to no advertising whatsoever. As it stands, Billionsoft and Tommo have both gone silent for the most part, with the last seen of the Accolade name being re-releases of other titles, basically meaning they're trying to regain profit currently especially after the events of 2020.
    I dont think Bubsy is dead just yet, however he's definitely had it rather rough. I for one will keep holding out hope for the better, but we'll just have to see. Thanks for the vid, man!
    - X

    Bubsy is a real underrated franchise I hate how most RUclipsrs would hate on it because everyone else is doing it. They make so many bull crap reasons on why it’s bad like Bobcats can’t glide. But Hedgehogs can’t run at the speed of sound. Are they blind. Or is it because they are bias. I’m going with the second one. Also the first game is not that bad in fact I think it’s really good the only complaint I do have is the one hit deaths but they make it fair with starting with 9 lives and if you defeat an enemy and then die that enemy stays dead. Yeah bubsy 3d was bad. But it is not really bad I played worst games. But even then I feel like bubsy is very underrated and got a bad rep from some bias RUclipsrs who give reasons on what’s wrong with the game don’t make any sense.

      I extremely agree with you! I too hate how bubsy is bullied and mistreated by other fagot reviewers because of JONTRON! bubsy 1 was a miracle for his little franchise, the one-hit death on bubsy is very reminiscent of the alex kidd franchise, damn! It's incredible that I'm the only one who thinks that Bubsy dies on one hit like Alex Kidd and has fall damage like Prince of Persia! jontron says "they add the fall damage in a motherfucker 2D platformer?!! then you can see that jontron has never seen platformers that had fall damage, like desert demolition if you chose willy the coyote! you know? I think bubsy was safe when neither RUclips nor other connection platforms for recording videos existed in that golden age, well yes, the others would have been pissed off with his games because they continue to lose like idiots but at least they couldn't smash the yarnballs to bubsy but above all to the fans of bubsy with all those shitty videos they keep uploading on the internet!!!

    I actually really wanted to like Strikes Back because of the improvements to the mechanics and controls, but sadly the level design and repetitiveness (as well as lack of rewards when collecting yarn) ended up discouraging me from beating it. A shame, because the new mechanics were very welcome. In the very very odd chance they decide to bring back Bubsy for one more round, I wouldn’t mind them bringing these controls back, just with more interesting and varied level design, something more dynamic, like the carnival or train levels of the first game

    This was pretty neat to watch. I feel nearly the same way as you about the franchise. The first game, while chaotic and frustrating, still holds a special place in my heart. I played it so much as a kid, and I absolutely loved the environments and the music. It was flawed for sure, but it still had some sort of magic and charm to it.
    Beyond that first game though, the franchise was a nightmare. Bubsy 2 was sort of fun, but it was somehow even more chaotic than Bubsy 1. Also, the levels and enemies felt so un-Bubsy that it didn't even make me want to play it.
    I was cautiously optimistic whenever the franchise was revived, but both of those games were a let down. Paws on Fire was fine for what it was (a glorified mobile game that was a literal clone of an existing game - Bit Trip), but Woolies Strike Back was baffling underwhelming. The game was fun for exactly one level before you realize that you are doing the same thing over and over and over. All of the enemies are exactly the same in every level. The level designs are just the exact same thing with different platforms pasted in different spots. Once you've beaten the first level, you know exactly what the rest of the game is like. It's like the dev team ran out of time and just copy/pasted the first level onto the rest of the game.
    Once again, such potential in this character and franchise was squandered. All he needed was a single decent sequel to keep him alive, but all he got was a series of minimum-effort games.

    I've only played the Bubsy games directed by Michael Berlyn. Most of the content in Bubsy 1 is frustrating to play, thanks to clunky jump mechanics and level design that tries to blend two philosophies with unnatural results. Despite what it has going against it, it certainly had the potential to be a genuinely fun, challenging action-platformer. When the game calms down and provides something tighter and more streamlined, it can be satisfying to play. Being the first instalment, it managed to establish a good foundation, one that Bubsy 2 and Fractured Furry Tails threw away for something of much lower quality. I've only seen footage of both sequels, and they look like messy dumpster fires with no rhyme or reason applied to the design and art direction. As such, I won't be touching them anytime soon.
    As for Bubsy 3D, which I have completed seven times as of this writing, I can confidentially say it's not a good game. It's a product of its time, an era of game design when people were experimenting and figuring out what works in the new dimension and what doesn't, and the game didn't have the resources necessary to do it justice. That said, it's nowhere near one of the worst games I've played, let alone one of the worst PS1 games. It struggles substantially in visuals, play control, boss battles, underwater levels, enemy placement, and escalating the challenge, but there's plenty to appreciate; intuitive secrets, a well-structured ratio between objectives and value, enjoyable multiplayer, consistent framerate, good music, and exceptionally high-quality animations. There are even hazards like falling platforms that are introduced safely before being put in more dangerous areas. It's just a shame they're forgotten about in the last third. Overall, a poorly-dated game with more boring or frustrating moments than fun ones but not a worthless dumpster fire.

    13:47 What's weird about that interview is that he said Bubsy 3 (not 3D, as there was that Atari Jaguar game as the third official game that he despised along with Bubsy 2) was one of his biggest disappointments, yet he also said that he was still proud of it despite not being as good as Mario 64.
    On another note, I'm probably one of the few people who doesn't hate Bubsy 3D.
    Also, don't forget to cite your sources.
    9:13 Looks nice, at least.

    True story... Back when Mortal Kombat II was first released for the SNES, I went to the mall with my mom and split ways while she went shopping for clothes. I saw MK2 available and I freaked out. I immediately grabbed a copy but knowing how my mom hated Mortal Kombat and would force me to return it, I also bought Bubsy for the SNES as a diversion. lmao...
    So I stuffed my MK2 game in one of my big cargo pant pockets (remember cargo pants!? lol) and walked out with Bubsy in the shop bag.
    My mom asked what I bought and I showed it to her and she thought it looked cute. lol 😈bwuahahah...
    I still have that Bubsy game right now. I actually finally beat it about 3 years ago and swore I'd never do that again. It took me like 23 tries from start to finish. I don't know why I was so compelled to beat it, but each time I played it, I began to remember all the cheap traps and enemy spawns and I also actually became acclimated with the crap movement and hopping/gliding mechanics. But what a shitter. lol.
    Once I beat it, I took my phone and snapped a few pics. Today, I do get nostalgic about Bubsy 1. I ended buying Bubsy 2, despite everyone's warnings.
    It is absolutely terrible. The lack of sense of direction and double the cheap death traps, really drove me away. The camera movement was on crack too. But it's still not the worst SNES game I played. That title still belongs to Beavis and Butthead. Second to that would be Ren and Stimpy Veediots. Ooof...😩

    It would be something if they made Bubsy a soul dimension Mobian IE: Blaze’s answer to Rouge.
    An infamous character (in this case being a movie star) with a secondary high profile job (sole dimension variant of a gun agent) who’s not above being a playful flirt with the more innocent altruistic heroic characters to get what he wants/the job done.
    The overall joke with him being, while he’s saving the world as an agent everyone just thinks it’s part of his next picture and doesn’t believe the danger was real.

    Its a shame they made bubsy 3d instead of bubsy 3. The team behind busby 1 actually seemed to understand what they did wrong and had the had the chance to make bubsy 3 they may have finally made a truly great bubsy game and that alone could have saved the franchise, especially considering the playstation was new and there wasn’t alot of 2d platformers that whole generation.
    But instead we get what is easily in contention for worst game ever made. Yeah the team who made it pioneers but everyone else was a pioneer at the same time. Super Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider,and Resident Evil were all in development at the same time and i think all except tomb raider released before Bubsy 3d. They simply should have never tried to make a 3d game and the franchise is remembered as being dreadful because of it.
