Eric you’re the only educator I know of who could seamlessly transition from Waylon Jennings to Smashing Pumpkins via Big Star and Pink Floyd! What a fantastic lesson, I now need to get an octave fuzz to complement my phaser. Your YT lessons are costing me a fortune man! 😂 Looking forward to next week’s TrueFire release.
Wilco’s Passenger Side and Luna by The Smashing Pumpkins which are both super fun to play sent me on the quest for the right phaser for my board. Such awesome tones. I ended up with the Spaceman Explorer, which covers everything from alt country to kid cudi.
Phaser was one of the most overlooked effects by me as a guitarist. I only used it for fast funky, groovy chops as a cool filter instead of a wha pedal or EVH-like songs and that was it. Once I got into Pink Floyd, Tame Impala and other bands that explore more this particular effect a whole new world of possibilities was unsealed in my own particular musical perspective. Great video as always, Eric, you are a much needed source of knowledge and clarification in the actual context of music information spread on the internet. Love your work, dude!
I got your new Truefire yesterday. I hope I get to catch your live session with them tomorrow. Love your teaching and genuine excitement about all things guitar!

Eric, I remember reading an interview where Billy Corgan said that crazy fuzz sound in the Cherub Rock solo (and others on Siamese Dream) was an EHX Micro Synth. There may have been phaser too, as Butch Vig was using a Mutron BiPhase all over that album, but I think the crazy filter section of the Micro Synth can give some of that sweeping effect.
The El Goodo intro has such a nice analog sound, even that bright. And I guess that makes sense because it was, and to tape, probably through a tube mic through a tube pre-amp. That kind of thing would be worth spending some bucks on, like the Effectrode Phasomatic or something maybe. Something super-gooey.
I've got the MXR Phase95 (Phase 90 and a Phase45 in a mini format) as well as the MXR Phase 100 (what Keith used on Some Girls and Tattoo You). All my favorite settings are slow speed. Thanks for creating the backing tracks.
This is beautiful. And I’m happy to say I have a Phase 90 - and a Deco. And it sounds 93% right! So I swear Lukenbach is also Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues. So I’m working on an arrangement tonight! Thanks Eric!
Man, I can’t wait to get out of work and go play my freaking guitar. With my phase 90 of course so inspirational I love it. And go eat pizza it’s Friday.
Yo Eric! I'm enjoying your playing the changes truefire course: leads naturally from the CAGE lessons. Enjoy your weekend and have an extra slice of pizza for me.
Yeah, slow basic phase for the win. I've gone through a lot of phasers that do all kinds of crazy stuff. A slow 2-stage phaser remains my favorite. Nice song examples to highlight phasing beauty and versatility.
When I finally decided to get some pedals, I went on this two-day pilgrimage to Sweetwater. My goals were a rotary and a delay, but after a full day of that, I had it down to my finalists, but needed some different sounds before I left for the evening. I went on a stroll in the storeroom, and there before me was the fabled orange script MXR phase 90! I remembered reading that everyone and their brother said it was essential for "Gilmour tones" and more, so I picked it off the shelf, along with a few other pedals I wanted to try, and went back to my little practice room. Safely ensconced, I started working through the pile of goodies, when a worker knocked on my door. "Do you have the Phase 90?" "Oh, yes, it's right here." "Sorry, that's our only one on hand, and it was just sold. We need to ship it out tonight." And she took it away before I even played a note with it!
You are right Eric... Gilmours phrasing is so right for this effect. 😎👍 When trying to get the guitar to sustain into feedback with this effect...personally like playing the lead of "Becks Bolero" with Walsh' Bolero off of James Gang Rides Again album. Great lead to find just the right effects...😁👍👍 Excellent video man😎👍👍 😎✌👍❤🖖
I have that same script-logo, Phase 90. Sweet sounding phaser. It sounds nothing like a late 90's block-logo one that I have which also sounds cool but doesn't have that 3D swirl kind of thing.
as an almost 20 year guitar player i always hated phaser without fail, but your making a compelling argument! may i ask how you might compare the phaser in context functionality versus a tremolo or a uni vibe etc. thanks for sharing as always!
I recommend a Phase 45 or a Behringer Bi Phase for the full phaser experience… They used the original Mutron Bi Phase on the record… the Behringer is an exact copy of the real 70s beast!
I used to get pretty close to the cherub rock tone in the late 90s/early 00s with a Strat>DOD Phaser>Russian Big Muff>Sovtek MiG60. Never should have sold that rig.
Try a MXR Phase 95. The vintage 45 setting on high is a killer faux Leslie. Something about that smoothness of a vintage 45 I never knew about owning a 90. Honestly is an amazingly versatile phaser pedal in a small package. Killer playing as always by the way.
I had to play Deep Purple’s Black Night with a band. Hated that riff and song… until I played it with a phaser (or was it chorus? I can’t remember. I don’t usually bother with those effects.) It changed the whole way I perceived the song.
Where can I get some sheet type of thing for the chords in the here's a quarter solo? Eh? I know the chords just the solo transcription type of thing. Oh sorry I'll just write it down I have a lazy problem. Mostly it was about the scales in the solo in relation to the chords by interval if that makes sense. That is a big bend from a to b I mean?

AT 8:18 sounds like the opening sustaining note to Magic Man by Heart. Very Cool!
Awesome Cherub Rock rendition and breakdown
Phaser into drive pedals! Thats was how EVH did it.
+1 on Wilco’s Passenger Side 👍
Ahhh man love Big Star, you sold me on the phaser!!! Will defo have to sit down and learn that Ballard of El Godo now.
It’s a cool tune. I need to dust off my big Star tunes for a set.
The holy one knob orange wonder! It’s my favorite modulation pedal. Love the Waylon tune getting in there.
Finally a video of a phaser pedal that uses Waylon as the primary example
I'm going to enjoy this one! I love your playing
Great video, thanks. It was good to see someone start with Waylon for a phaser video. Thats one of my favourite songs.
Awesome cherub rocking, such a great solo!
What a great video, can't wait till Tuesday

Always loved Phaser, probably through Pink Floyd........they work beautifully with a Rhodes or Wurli too!
Awesome video. Thanks
Jennings' Luckenback Texas guitar part bears a striking resemblance to Paul Anka's 'It Doesn't Matter Anymore'.
And also Danny O'Keefe's "Goodtime Charlie's Got the Blues."

Phaser is usually the effect I skip on my modeling amps. Leave it to Master Haugen to show me the error of my ways. Thank you, sire.
Eric, I always enjoy when your presentations show up! I've got to ask: is the entire neck wood (on the first guitar) rosewood? Thanks;)

What are your thoughts on the MXR Blue Box?
I don't think that Billy Coogan gets the credit that he deserves, he's a genius 🔥
Thanks, Eric. Question. You put the phase into fuzz, but how about fuzz into phase?
What do you have your octave fuzz knobs set at. I do a guitar pedal experimentation series on my RUclips channel I’d love to do that guitarmony thing
I always crank the fuzz knob to max on fuzz pedals - I wanna hear everything those transistors got!
