  • Why play a new instrument when we make music for old instruments?
    Our Principal Horn Roger Montgomery performs a section from Schumann’s showstopping Konzertstück for Four Horns, and introduces a new ‘19th century-style’ horn. This instrument has valves, which makes performing such challenging repertoire possible.
    Hear it in our upcoming concerts with Sir András Schiff, also featuring Brahms' blockbuster piano concertos. tinyurl.com/ya...

    I'm glad he mentioned Franz Strauss, because it reminded me of what Wagner said about him: "Strauss is a detestable fellow, but when he plays the horn, I cannot be cross with him."

    The Konzertstuck is a piece that really needs to be heard live.

    Did you know why Richard Strauss wrote both horn concertos for an Eb horn, instead of the F horn?
    Specially the second, wroted in 1942 when the double horn was largely developed, and the funny thing is that the horns in the orchestra where wroted in F!

      Because he had a grudge against Horn players and wanted to make their lives as difficult as possible - the bastard !!

    when he says "playing with the crook in B-flat" is that making in a horn in B-flat alto or B-flat bass?

    I like his opening statement about needing a new instrument when antiques are still available. It's a sad reality that wind instruments, even metal ones, are way less durable than string instruments. If you take good care of it, you can play your whole professional career on one, but it won't have much life left after that. With recorder, it's almost a bad idea to practice on your wooden concert instrument.

    What's the pitch difference of the third valve?

    • @noahmason2546
      @noahmason2546 5 лет назад

      Its the same as the first and second valves together, but a bit sharper so its an alternate fingering for 1-2

    The other question is; why don't you play the right mouthpiece with this instrument, instead of a modern mouthpiece? At least as important as the horn for the sound!

    • @Markworth
      @Markworth 5 лет назад

      What's wrong with this mouthpiece? I don't recognize the model, but it looks like it's just a Vienna Horn mouthpiece with a modern rim. It's the same one he uses on natural Horn.

      I have a similar horn by Schmidt and it responds better to an early 20th Century mouthpiece.
