Can you please explain how to change the viewing mode to “Text” after entering the edit mode. Thank you!
I decided to install the GS package as it was simpler, at first glance it did not work, but I just copied the lib folder content to bin folder an voila!, easier installation and Inkscape is working with EPS as well.
You sound so calm and confident, I knew it was going to be helpful even without looking at the rating and comments.
Thank you.
i am speechless, 3 years later this is still the best way to do it and awesomely explain. Chapeau my friend!
Hello, a simpler workaround (when you have admin rights) seems to me to :
1 install Ghostscript,
2. then install Scribus ( an excellent desktop publishing application, free as in free speech ;) )
3. open the .eps with Scribus and then save as .svg
4. open with Inkscape
Works for me so far. Thanks for the tutorial anyway :)
wow, incredible, after 7 years it still works, i have been going crazy and cursing adobe and everyone who uses eps files. it's wild that the solution is so comparably easy to do once you know how
i must say a big THANK YOU, it works!!! Just a note that I am using windows 7 64bit, the PATH in the edit environment is slightly different from what is shown, it does not have the 'add new' part so I just add on the C:/gs to the existing path as shown as a first method and it works perfectly. I am now able to edit my eps files :)
Emphasize that step of *restart* inkscape... I didn't think to do that at first, and it didn't pick up whatever magic ghostscript has installed! Great, succinct tutorial...
Still the best instruction even in 2019 to get Inkscape open eps files on Windows
glad to hear it!
Worked for me aswell, WIndows 10. I Installed Ghostscript using Chocolatey. Powershell > choco install ghostscript > my ghostscript files ended up in: C:\Program Files\gs\gs9.50\, I put the bin-folder in my path and also copied all files inside lib-folder into bin. Works! Thanks you!
This was incredibly helpful 2 years later, thank you! Wish I had found it sooner. One thing I noticed is that I was able to install onto my desktop and before clicking finish on the install prompt still modify the files. This saved me from downloading 7-zip
Thought that this didn't work at first, but I just needed to close and reopen inkscape. Great tutorial!
Very helpful, thank you - I just installed it regularly and added a path to both the bin and lib folders - works like a charm and converted instantly
I just did this on Windows 11 with GS 9.56.1 and it worked! Once again saved by this video!
WOW!!! IT WORKS! I lost so much time trying different converters, they all failed , but now the issue is solved. Thank you so much!!!
Its 2024 and you are still a lifesaver.
This was such a concise tutorial. Thank you so much! I'm not overly knowledgeable when it comes to computers so this was extremely helpful. You're my new best friend.
2022 and this method still works perfectly. I am using Windows 11 as well.
I can't import EPS following Inkscape page instructions but with your tutorial I did it in just 3 minutes, Wonderful!! thanks a lot.
This is the best method for download of EPS files to InkScape...by far, just follow instructions carefully and there will be no issues
Worked for me 6 years later. Thank you!
Done, it's great! It works also in the 2023! xD
You the man! Thank you a bunch. I was super sceptic about installing that EXE and found your video on a blog!
It still works as of Feb 2022, Win 10 64bit
It's still working after 4 years.
Thank you✌
Still works in 2023!! You're a champ for sure!
Amazing! I have been struggling with inkscape not able to open eps for ages! Thank you so much for sharing your solutions! Solute!!!
You are amazing, ive been wondering about this for as long as i can remember, Ive used cloudconvert up till now, but i hate the way it destroys layers, and turns advanced shapes, and gradients into hundreds of seperate objects, this is just such a win for me, so thank you sincerely,
Thank you, thank you, and thank you again! I have been looking for this for years! I am so happy to have something that works for .eps conversions!
What happens between 2:12-2:20 ?
Do you just edit any of them? The path specified is different and doesn't end with common
Worked perfectly. Solved a lot of headaches. I was converting online and was having limited success.
Your tip worked perfectly!!! Thanks for saving me a lot of headaches using online conversion programs!
He's an hero!!! Man you just for the thing that I am trying to figure out forever.
wow brilliant....simples...failed when i did via help menus in INkS... followed your tut and works a dream Thx
Still the best instruction even in Q3 2020! Thank you!
Thank you! 8/20/2020 and this still worked flawlessly! Great, very clear, instructions. Even with pause button use.
Works like a charm! Now I have to go read on what Ghostscript does exactly.
My boss keeps sending me EPS files and I have no Illustrator so your tutorial made my life a lot easier. Thanks.
Many thanks !!! Extremely concise and straightforward.
Note: The only way that it worked for me was extracting the files from the .exe using the 7zip, exactly how he did on the tutorial. At the first moment I tried to use the installer and it did not work.
Thanks Open Source Bug, for an effective solution. Worked successfully. Tip for user: Prefered 32 bit version if 64-bit version not working. 👍
Very nice, glad it works! Thank you for sharing your solution!
3 years later. Worked. Thank you
it works well ! you have to pay attention to the path though, I put it in C: (it looks good to me!) but he put it in my personal profile folder
THANKS !
You're an ace! You went so fast I missed a step and got an error (but figured it out). THANK YOU!!!!
until now this method still works, thanks
Dec 2021 and this is still relevant! v1.02 still doesn't import EPS files properly, if at all. Thanks so much!
Thanks it worked! By the way you have a great voice, articulate and smooth to the ears! Hope you dont mind me asking which accent is it?
Wanted vector.
Found great site for it.
Don't have AI, downloaded one,
got trojan, got rid of trojan,
got inkscape, can't import,
watched vid, can import,
turns out the vector I wanted doesn't even have different layers, it's just a flat image. :/
But now I can atleast look for a different vector!
THANK YOU!
December 2020 and it's still the perfect method... Thanks!
used this in 2021 and works perfectly, thanks a lot
Before the Import Settings window pops up I get a pop up with this message :
Inkscape has received additional data from the script executed. The script did not return an error, but this may indicate the results will not be as expected:
ps2pdf executed but logged the following error:

In which my only option is "OK"
And although I get no error, I just get a blank file opened in inkscape.
any help?
same issue with me
Same here.
Your Video helped a lot man, thank you!
pure and simple
Thank you so much for this. I have no idea HOW it works, its black magic to me, but it WORKS.
Awesome! Just used and it worked like a charm! Thank you!!!!
I can confirm that this works with the latest version of GhostScript 9.56.1 for Windows (64 bit) in combination with Inkscape 1.1.2 on a Windows 10 system.
Here we Are 4 years later and guess what- still the only solution that I've found to work.
2021 and this still works! Thanks
You need to close inkscape before these operations.
worked like a charm for windows 10! (2020)
What a great descriptive and visual explanation. Thank You!! It worked perfectly.
Had to play with it for a bit but the adding the directory to path worked! Nice one!
Thanks for share! it works like a charm With GhostScript and Inkscape version 1.0 over Windows 10 64bit 🙂👍
Thank You! Despite your method I made the normal instalation (next next next), but i went to directory of program and made the same instructions (cut and past the lib in bin etc..._ and worked. In the end my path was C:\Program Files\gs\gs9.26\gs (this for x64).
Good to hear it works for you! Thanks for sharing!
@@opensourcebug8028 Does it matter whether you use this in Win 7 (x64) or 10? I have 7 and some of the boxes are not appearing the same as yours. Thanks
Thanks! Your method worked (repacking the files) with Inkscape 0.92 but the classic install method NOT! Take care of this :)
Worked like a charm. Thanks
ghostscript works, thank you very much! You saved my day :)
It work great!!! finally, someone who could explain in a very clear way!
If you decide to install the "gs" folder to some place different as I did (eg: C:\myinstallations\software\inkscape\gs) then this tip will make things easier for you:
Once you're finished pasting the contents of lib into gs, on the left-hand side of windows explorer open the directory tree, work your way down to the gs folder, click on that folder - and yep, the contents opens in the right-hand side. But that's not what we're interested in. Direct your gaze to the little address bar that is above the directory tree (on the left) and the contents (on the right) and if you left click in there it will conveniently show the address to this folder...
...right-click that and copy. Or left click, highlight, and control+c...whatever you normally do to copy a line of text...
...and now when you get to the environment variables you can click new and instead of typing simply control+V (paste) in the string. No typing! Yay.
Thank you so very much! I thought something was wrong with my PC since Inkscape was made to create vector graphics... Could you please explain, too, what in detail one is doing to the system by adding the C:\gs-path?
This is great and simple-to-follow. Thank you! If only Inkscape wasn't so slowww...
Excellent explanation! It's working! Many thanks 😃
Worked when I edited the environment settings and extracted the files. THANKS!
REally works, great job!!!!
Fantastic - works perfectly - thanks for the clear and simple instruction - I have been looking to do this for a long time.
The beauty of this is that the hard work payed off. Thank you so much!
Dude, that was amazing! I only wonder why Inkscape doesn't come bundled with GhostScript...
Wow, it absolutely works on Windows 10. Thank you so much!
It worked! Thank you! (at first it didn't, BUT I restarted Inkscape then it did)
You are a champ! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
thank you so much! you saved me a huge headache! best tutorial . subscribed.
Thank you very much!!! I was looking for a solution like this for quite sometime and yours worked like a charm...
Thank you very much for these simple to follow instructions. Worked like a charm!
Thanks a ton. It helped me a lot. It was just like explaining to a baby.
Worked like a kentucky fried chicken drumstick on a rottweiler. Thanks a mill.!!!
Worked! But... I can't drag an EPS file from inside a folder, only work from desktop. Thanks for the video!
Interesting, thank you for sharing! Perhaps there are unicode characters (non A-Z/0-9) that inkscape can't work with in the path.
thank you for your comment. That worked for me as well. I would never find out what's wrong...
Me to
28 march 2021: tried on Inkscape 1.0.2-2 both with the current Ghostscript version and the 9.20 used in this video, and it does not work, I get the same error message.
Amazing!! Easy to understand and works perfectly. Thanks a lot for this video.
Works, and thanks for the other usefull progs. Subscribed immediately.
Hi, the eps files from shutterstock are opened as 'puzzlelified' raster images. Like one vector is divided into square raster blocks. This happens to 99% of eps from shutterstokc, is there any way ?
very helpful , thank you so much man , you gain a new subscriber
Such a helpful video. Saved my life and many others, as the comments might suggest :O
Thank you OSB. That was a great help.
U Saved My Day Pal ..... i pity on those 8 disliked people, who couldn't achieve this XD
I tried this today with Ghostscript 9.53.3 for Windows (64 bit). There is no gs folder inside that extracted .exe file
Worked like a charm!Thank you!
Nice!
Six years later... still needed to follow these instructions with the weird installation method
Thank you so much - this was extremely helpful & I can now finally open EPS files! :-)
Glad to hear it's already helpful!
Great tutorial, Thanks a bunch!! Worked perfectly!
Very clear ! Thank you. It works perfectly right now : )
Thank you! Ghost Script worked for me!
Wait wait wait !!!! I got it whooooo hoooo , thank you so much :)
I have a problem... Winzip, doesn't show me the option to extracting the files. Will be the version of Ghostscript? .. What can I do?
