The lead ropes that I put together are mostly 12'. I favor that length in general. Sometimes I may want a 14' . My 12' lead line has another use. With an appropriate knot I convert the lead line to reins.
I take one end of the lead line and attach it to the loop on the rope halter with a knot. I place the other end over the horses neck and tie another knot to complete the reins. No metal parts at all. Double braided sail line is typically my favorite type of rope for these purposes. I also use some types of dynamic (some elasticity) climbing rope. All of these types of rope have very good 'feel'. They are very strong. They do well in a variety of situations. They take knots well. They are soft.

When was the change to the snap mounting made? I have a rope here with a sewn-in, non-replaceable snap and I'm trying to figure out how old it is.
