I 100% agree with you. I started streaming on Twitch and was seeing absolutely zero growth. I moved over to RUclips because I think it will be better for my long-term growth, and I started creating other content. So some thoughts: regarding the exclusivity thing Twitch has with Partners (and somewhat with Affiliates), from what I've seen, I think it's because Twitch doesn't think they need to do anything to improve. They know there are millions of people who are desperate to make Partner and will sign anything to be a Partner. Twitch just doesn't care, they can do whatever they want and people will still be so desperate to become a Partner, they'll literally sign anything. As for the future of content creation, I agree with you that RUclips will be a vastly different place for streaming in a few years. Right now they don't have all the things Twitch has and it keeps most people away from moving to RUclips. I've heard people say they'll only go to RUclips if RUclips makes their streaming more like Twitch, however in my opinion, you don't want to get there after they've already become successful. That's exactly why it's so hard to grow on Twitch right now--Twitch is already huge and oversaturated with streamers. I've chosen to go through the growing pains of RUclips streaming because I honestly think getting to the platform early is the best way to go. When I moved to RUclips, I really thought it was the right thing to do. But most of my friends thought it was a really bad move, and don't think RUclips will go anywhere with streaming. I honestly was a little surprised at the reactions I got, but I really have strong instincts telling me this is the right move. Thanks for the video, it was very honest and informative!
Hey Tefty, enjoying the videos again. I’m someone who got to know you and the rest of the gang back with Planet Destiny in the good old days of Vanilla D1. I followed you on Twitch for a while but just struggled to find time for streams so have stuck with RUclips over the years. Hearing your story and advise has been very interesting. Whatever course you end up following I wish you nothing but success with hopefully less of the negative aspects of content creation as a career. Looking forward hopefully to more RUclips videos in your future!
Just came across this video and the part about how growth happens on twitch is one of the smartest things that I've heard and I haven't heard anyone talk about how you're going to know your viewers and know who subs to you until you hit that massive point, which doesn't happen overnight. I've recently experienced a ton of growth from being a core part of a community all through twitch, and it's not something that I realized was even possible until it happened to me. I do think that once you hit a certain point, growth on twitch is still possible, but if you can master youtube or some other platform, that's a more direct route to success, much like you mentioned, and it's far more frequent to grow through another platform.
Hey there! I am a music streamer, and growing on twitch has been a very different experience than I think what gamers experience. And, I was asked to do a front page stream last year, before I was partnered.
Wow dude! Surprised this video has only 18K views. Watched it start to finish and learned a lot. Liked and subbed instantly. You've given me a lot to think about. I came here because I decided I want to start streaming professionally but only have like 15 followers on Twitch and have no RUclips or Facebook content. After seeing all this, I'm seriously considering focusing on RUclips instead of Twitch, and basically doing Twitch as a secondary platform to pull people into my RUclips instead of the other way around. Ideally I'd be a affiliate closer to partner on Twitch by the end of the year, but yeah, what you said makes a lot of sense. Especially since I don't have any RUclips content yet, it's gonna be hard to grow both platforms from scratch, basically. Bottom line: I'm gonna focus on RUclips initially and maybe shift my focus more to Twitch down the road, once I get more of a following on RUclips. But for now, I'm definitely leaning towards RUclips. Was just wondering what software would be great for content. Everyone recommends different software to record gameplay, I've tried a couple and so far no cigar.
Most people forget to tell you this: forget your graphics, stream package, alerts, web cam quality etc should be great. First thing to do is speaking english very well other than your native language is mandatory to grow. Also in my opinion; if you expect to earn your living just with full time streaming if your new channel is sadly not possible. You have to find a main job and after that, stream as a secondary like a hobby to earn extra.
Bingo you are so right. You have to find a main job and stream part time bc streaming is not stable income. There’s so many people streaming thinking that they can make it. It’s very hard you have to find a niche for your content.
Great insight bro. I haven't seen you in a few years and was thinking about you randomly because you were one of the first Streamers I resignated with and the chill vibes really helped my anxiety. I also thought one day I want to be a Streamer like you. I finally started my streaming journey last week on Twitch and i watched tons of videos how to be a Streamer and I hit affiliate easy because I have following on other social medias but this video really hit the nail just right because I'm getting wisdom from somebody who has been through the journey. I'm going to take your advice and focus on ever green content and focus on RUclips more than Twitch as well as Tiktok. Hope your health has been holding up brother. Much love to you and hope to see your face again (no homo) lol
long time DCP podcast listener, you showed up on my home page and I realised ive never actually seen what you look like, great to put a face to the name! awesome videos!
Information here is waaaaaay more useful than anything else I've come across. Thanks for uploading this man! Question: when you're recording a video for a certain topic, do you work off of a rough script or just sort of wing it? I find the second I hit that record button I tend to completely lose my train of thought or im repeating statements I've already made. What are ways you might work around this?
Teft ! Been watching you since the very beginning with Planet Destiny all the way back in 2014, when I was a sophomore in high school. Its 2021 now, full blown adult and an up and coming streamer, so this vid is VERY useful 🙏🏾. Thanks for the laughs through out the years !
This sums up what kinda has been known for a while know. And it's all well brought to the point. I guess this video is one of those evergreen content videos you mentioned ;)
I tried Facebook, RUclips and Twitch for streaming to see whre I wanted to continue streaming. They all have different audience types but Facebook seems to hinder smaller streamers. I was getting my videos muted for "copyrighted" music where I shouldn't have been muted on Kingdom Come. The worst thing I see people do is go quiet until their chat becomes active. I'm always checking out other streams and nothing makes me want to dip out faster than somebody who does not talk at all or if it's a "followers only" chat. I'm currently looking to stream on another platform that is also friendly for the music I use for my streams, but might be stuck to Twitch for the time being.
Constructive criticism: the thumbnail is really good, just a tad dark and under the big Twitch logo you could've put "in 2022" just to fill that space.
Have been watching your content off and on for years. Appreciate glimpse behind curtain. I have no interest in streaming anymore but think interesting pressures it brings
tied to the affiliate program currently. i have only been at it for 6 months now. i am growing somewhat on tiktok and am hoaning in more on my youtube channel. i am still figuring it all out, and staying consistent. but i do hope as youtube is challenging twitch, twitch makes some upgrades to there algorithm etcccccc...
Hey Tefty This is the first time I have come across you. I'm pleased i did. This is by far the most down to earth insightful explaination. Just the tip of the Iceberg I know. I would bw interested in hearing a lot more.
I’ve been streaming for 4 years now with over 4000 hours and still sit there with 1 viewer. As much as I wanna make changes I think I’m just too far gone now and it’s time I called it a day. It’s so sad to think about as I’ve put so much time into speaking to people but yeah, I’m too old now. 30 in March. The most subs I’ve ever had is 24… right now I have NONE 😅 I laugh but it actually really makes me down. Anyways nice video dude good luck to ya
On the age front, I started streaming when I was 32, so definitely not too old. The problem is with Twitch for new content creators. It's just not a good platform for growth. You can put thousands of hours into Twitch and it's truly luck of the draw at times. You might actually find new excitement in making content on other platforms, that could in return grow your stream 👍 Either way, good luck in your endeavors!
I've always compared twitch to an MLM. They lack any real new user acquisition plan. I rarely if ever see it advertised anywhere else. What they do is have the streamer do their own advertising to then bring in new users, that eventually in turn become streamers themselves because of the appeal of "making money playing games". Then when most of these people fail to ever reach the $100 payout floor and then quit, that money flows back to twitch. I'm doing well for the limited time I have as a SAHD but I will never not see it as sort of an MLM
Amazing video as usual great edits and great points, But i am kinda Sad that you didnt mention Moderators of your streams cause that can make or break a stream for me, Would be nice to know how to choose someone for moderating as well. Just something i was thinking while watching your video.
This is a fantastic video! I make a lot of content that is about how creators grow through their business(es) as well - pumped to see others making stuff in the same space. :)
good points man been working on these things for a year now it's still tuff and i have only been streaming for a year but still having fun with it... kinda miss streamin fortnite with 25+ average but i rather make halo n destiny content so transitions from games seem to be really tuff, so i rather focus on making the video content that can get to people who wanna see it instead of upsetting fortnite kids by playing different games
TBH don't see much future in either streaming only platforms or only streaming on YT without making content. Discoverability is designed to be awful as people are more likely sub, gift ect when there is more viewers around. Another big problem with twitch it is a platform that only appeals to people who stream or are interested in starting streaming and a lot of people who start streaming on twitch will last 6 months stop due to either burn out or lack of growth. Also a massive issue is that there is no real way to interact on twitch outside going live or being in someones chat, it would be great if twitch would add the ability to upload edited content (with a yt style algo that can get people onto the site via sharing) and reddit style feeds where you can post/comment in games/categories when you aren't live. Twitch will only ever improve discoverability if they find ways to sell it to streamers exactly like trovo. Definately good points though, better to put energy into learning video editing than grinding on twitch. You can be a good streamer without making good videos on a different platform than twitch but it is almost impossible to be a successful streamer without edited content.
Hello Tefty, thanks a lot for this insightful video. After uploading my first unedited video on my Gaming RUclips Channel and beeing affiliate on Twitch and stuck with 3 viewers (not mentioning the name of the channel as i am not baiting views obviously), i was looking for some tips on how to grow. I have seen many other videos about this topic, which clearly miss the essence. Your video here on the other hand has a really deep analytical PoV and comes with realistic solutions/tips. It really triggered me into rethinking my strategy (if i ever had any :P). Thank You so much for this and looking forward to see more of your content. Awesome!
This is why twitch need to upgrade the way streams are promoted. People who put a ton of effort into a stream should not be lumped in with couch streamers on their consoles.
Very interesting and informative, sir. Could you please show where it says we can't stream on RUclips if we are affiliate? I understand Twitch owns our content for 24 hours and so we are not allowed to multistream, but I don't remember seeing anything about being restricted to only streaming on Twitch. I just don't want to be breaking any rules and lose my affiliate status so any reference to this point would be much appreciated.
You arent restricted to only stream on Twitch. You can stream to other platforms as long as they are completely separate from your Twitch stream, for ex. You stream 12-3 on Twitch, then you stream from 3-6 on YT. Twitch just doesnt allow you to multi-stream
I Thought it was That you could not Stream to other Platforms Simultaneously. I thought you could Stream on other Platforms and you had to wait 24 hours to Repost out side of twitch. Did That Changed? That Sucks But I See People Streaming on Both one after the other Yt and Twitch
I BEEN STREAMING FOR 6-7 MONTHS AND I SEE NO PROGRESS. I TALK 100% OF THE TIME EVEN THO NOBODY IS WATCHING. I PLAY FUN GAMES AND POST ON TIKTOK EVERYDAY. MY FRIEND STARTERD STREAMING 2 MONTH AGO AND HE ALREADY PAST ME IN FOLLOWERS AND AVERAGE VIEWERS. THIS IS WHAT I DON'T UNDESTARD MY STREAMS ARE MORE FORMAL THAN HIS AND I POST CLIPS ON TIKTOK AND RUclips AND HE DOESN'T. I'M JELOUS OR ANYTHING BUT I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW HE PAST ME WHEN I CONTENT IS BETTER.
i have been sitting at a 10 viewers for 5 years Twitch is a horrible platform its overstated and the games are given out to high payed streamers before they come out so it tiers everyone to there pages not the low end streamers. I paid over 10k on games its just a scam to be a gamer

Guess I'm odd. If I'm wanting to check out a new game none of my regular channels cover I automatically ignore the top channels 😆

I honestly find it so ironic that in order to grow on twitch the current meta is to just post on RUclips and other social media platforms.
really
Can I say bad words while streaming? 👀😅
hOW TO GROW THE FASTEST WAY? FLEX YOUR ASSETS
Let's say you were a Halo god, but then had to play H1Z1 and then Fortnite to finally blow up years later.
Best way to grow a stream is to water it 🤪
It's just too saturated now, the golden age glory days are long gone unless you're lucky enough to have made it in before all that.

So basically: Don't do Twitch until you are big on other platforms. very helpful. not.

did affiliate change recently for twitch? Because last year you could stream on both twitch and youtube just not at the same time.
