This is a complete remake of two separate videos I posted around a year ago! A lot of my earlier videos are getting taken down because I didn’t know what copyright was back then 😭 I’ll remake and post the videos as they’re taken down!
The sentiment of "it's not that deep" when it comes to music kind of irks me. Even within the manufactured nature of what is what we call the K-pop industry the music that is given to us is still art regardless of the interpretation. I want people to look at my writing and look at the stories I write and have thoughtful conversations about them because art is that deep. Art has told the stories of pain, and happiness and has foreshadowed what is to come next. Art is made to invoke an emotion. To invoke an interpretation. And those things are deep because art is deep. Even if that art is not trying to be serious it is still art and it's still valid to talk about.
People don’t want to take things seriously, even artists who express their struggles and trauma in albums are condensed into caricatures of five same memes about their artistry. And okay, fine, not everyone wants to go beyond skin, but people love to mock others for being passionate about art. Like is all art not storytelling? Is it not what has sustained humanity since the very beginning? Why is it suddenly cringe to engage with stories for being something of value beyond popular tropes and aesthetics?
Off the Record is probably one of my favorite releases when it came to IVE. The individual stories converging through the apple’s influence is peak cinema imo. And it combines so perfectly with the scenes of them getting doused by the sprinklers. Anyone would be angry, or at the very least react negatively to getting sprayed by sprinklers, but they’re together just having a great time. No matter how much people rain on their parade (or turn on their sprinklers) they’re together living the same story, and that togetherness is their greatest strength.
@@fimbulvetr6129 Same!! You explained it so well - this release is kind of odd when considering the style of the tracks that came before it, but it works to emphasize IVE’s concept in such a good way
thank you very much for talking about “off the record” and “either way”, they are my favorite IVE songs especially for the feeling they transmit. “Either way” still makes me cry to this day.
When watching the making of the mv for "off the record" leeseo said the director told them the apples represent love. The apples is like a subject for us to think outside the box, leeseo planting the seed could possibly mean that she wanted love so she grow one herself which might mean her dedication and hope for one's love. Within the end if the mv we were seen ive being happy with apples flying around like everywhere. From what I think the mv represents the dark times they went through for debut until the end they became famous making multiple apples (love, possible "fans") appear when in the start there was only a seed. (My explanation sucks 😢)
I used the concept behind off the record night for my personal film project for college hehe This mv is genuinely very precious to me for what it represents (Also using a sample from cats to support your tt "baddie" with the cat theme is iconic behavior lol)
spot-on analysis as always! i've loved the song since it first came out not only bc of the music, but also how the lyrics have always come across as feeling somewhat... sad. at face-value, the singer cheekily asks someone to spend the night with them and be intimate. but musically-especially with the interpolation of "memory" as you mentioned and what i'm sure is from the cardigans' "lovefool" (the "love me, love me" line sung by yujin)-hints at something deeper. they crave company; they DESIRE to be understood and cherished without judgment. and if you look at the cardigans' "lovefool", just like all the works you've mentioned in this video, its lyrics also revolves around loneliness and desperation. heck, even there's also a scene in the music video where the band's vocalist is on an island
This is precisely why you are one of the best ktubers out there. You have such unique and thorough thoughts, and they make already great music that much better,
thinking in the context of this excellent analysis about the interpolation of "Lovefool" by the Cardigans in Off the Record's bridge, because it fits really neatly, too! Yujin sings the love me/love me lines from the chorus (and replaces fool me/fool me with leave me/leave me, which I'll come back to in a second), but Lovefool overall is a song about knowing that the singer's love interest has stopped loving her and not being able to do anything about it, but wanting to stay in the fake relationship anyways. I'm thinking about the first line of Lovefool -- "Dear I think we're facing a problem, you love me no longer," -- and your points about the collapse from the debut high. The song is about knowing the relationship is not what it used to be and knowing that it will eventually also need to die, but clinging onto what remains anyways. Not too dissimilar from old crab clinging to the stick that will kill it, even though no matter what happens, it will die. But Yujin singing "leave me, leave me" instead of "fool me, fool me" is like replacing this idea of wanting to stay in a loveless relationship with wanting to stay alone. Anyways, all to say, I think you're spot on with this analysis, and I love the added dimensions to what is maybe my favorite Kpop song of all time
1:49 as a profesional Off The Record Listener. Actually, the interpolation comes back at the bridge, in Wonyoung's line, is just kinda low so i can understand missing it, but it is in there, just pay attention to it
I listened to Off The Record for the first time in months and it made me really sad. There's just something in how the song's lyrics are about escaping at night and having fun, but knowing that feeling doesn't last makes you a bit sad. But you have to fight that feeling and live in the moment anyway.
Off the record is genuinely my favourite IVE release up to this point. Also I've never understood the "it's not that deep" argument, do people think the similarities are all accidental?
Not me IMMEDIATELY ugly-crying at the mention of Grizabella, thinking of my old lady cat Marla who passed away two days ago 😭😭😭 Bruh that song is seriously such a gut punch
i love this song so much. As for the people who approach videos like this saying "it's not that deep" should keep in mind that art is as deep as you interpret it :> (also, i was wondering if you were going to say anything about apt by rose? I'm constantly surprised that you don't have a video on lmao)
Quick correction! At 5:12 the pronunciation of "quay" is supposed to be /ki:/ or simply, homonymous with "key." Nice analysis! It's my favorite IVE song to date!
@@TierraD2021 Thank you haha! I was going to ask why it’s spelled that way, but I decided to look it up myself; it’s a borrowed French word that was originally spelled in English as “key” but later changed to closer match the French spelling to make it distinguishable from the other word key - good to know now!

@@halped real… it deserved a Grammy’s sweep in all major categories at the very least

this way it also makes more sense the connection of these two mvs to baddie, where they are… werecats or something…….
I’VE MINE has so many title tracks that Off The Record is so overlooked 😢
Holy shit i can’t believe I didn’t recognize Memory in Off The Record
