  • TV movie The Road to 1984, which starred James Fox and aired in January 1984, tells the story of George Orwell's adult life, from his time as a young imperial policeman in Burma to his death in 1950.
    Along the way, it recreates his experiences as a down and out, his research for The Road to Wigan Pier, the Spanish Civil War, his family life, the death of his first wife Eileen, the wooing of his second wife Sonia and the writing of his most famous novels, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four.
    David Ryan, author of George Orwell on Screen, explains how the drama came to be made and how critics reacted to it.

    The Road to 1984 was written by Willis Hall and directed by David Wheatley. Fox's co-stars were Janet Dale as his first wife Eileen and Julia Goodman as his second wife, Sonia.
