  • Master drummer Jochen Rueckert is a personal hero of mine. I've been checking him out since my teenage years, when I discovered Achim Kaufmann's "Weave", Paul Heller's "Kaleidoskop" & Jochen's own "Introduction" -three massively influential records for me. He is an outstanding drummer and a great guy who always speaks his mind, and this conversation is no exception. We talked about him coming up in the Cologne scene and then making his move to NY in the late 90s, winding up playing with Kurt Rosenwinkel & Marc Copland, his clarity, dynamics, what he expects from bandleaders and fellow musicians, self doubt and much more.

I really, really enjoyed this interview. All of it. Jochen's (and also your) thoughts about Miles, Ron, Tony, Kurt Rosenwinkle. Thoughts about passion but also doubts, young and old (Jochen), early experiences with internet, phone callings, CDs etc. and - here we are - being a aspiring musician, a strong and proud personality, but - even more interesting - dealing with the drums as a white European after Tony's success and efforts. In my personal book, Jochen is as important as Tony Oxley or Daniel Humair. These three Europeans are worldclass. No room for competition.

I love these interviews because they are such a great insight into the music I've loved for decades. I've probably listened to 'We Make The Rules' 10,000 times. Thank you Pablo!!

Thanks for doing this great interview. Thanks especially for investigating the „DIY“-or better „Do the Rückert“ aspect. I always found this particularly fascinating (and having tried it as well I have to admit it becomes truely difficult/impossible in the mastering process. Maybe because mastering IS taking the attitude of the generalized other).

After listening to this interview, I've gone back and re-listened to a ton of Jochen's music-incredible compositions. I'd like to know more about his composing process. I'm always blown away by drummers who can also write as well as any melodic/harmonic instrumentalists.

Nice interview...I know a bit of Jochen's music, from the great bands he puts together in NYC, he' s a great drummer, there's a classic YT video of him w/ Joe Martin on bass and both Mike Moreno and Lage Lund on guitars, the aptly and humorously named 'Guitar Center Quartet' that is really killing.

So subbing in Madeline Peyroux's band pays for an apartment in the tristate state area? I worked my ass off my whole life, both music and anything else, and I can easily smoke Jochen - so let me know how to get that gig
