Good good. I think Berio might be the best of his generation

I've listened to a few Berio pieces. I like the sequenzas, the Brahms reorchestration, and from my old CD collection, which is long gone, the work that streams Brahm's during the performance, Sinfonia something. The latter I listened to quite frequently; at that time the 80's and 90's I thought it mad modern!

@@ContemporaryClassical I will check it out. After my all time favorite composers, Berio is in a group with Henze a couple others like Krenek and Boulez that I am able to enjoy.

what do this Roman numerals mean?

They refer to what string the note should be played on. On a violin I is E, II is A, etc. Each string has a unique color so Berio asks the performers to play the same note on different strings to produce a unique and subtle shifting between colors while keeping the same pitch. It's a fun trick!
