Thanks Keith for taking us along as you chase the tenths! Just fascinating how many set ups and tooling and measurements are coming together to make Pearl as perfect as can be.

Great series👍🏼 Another way to remove that small bushing is to tap threads in it. Install a bolt, insert the rod and drive it out.😀

Those brake rivets you punched out look like small aircraft brake rivets made by Cleveland or Rapco orderable from Aircraft Spruce. The length of the rivet looks a little longer, Maybe McMaster Carr.

10:29 - The steel shaft has a bit higher thermal expansion rate compared to the case iron housing; a bit loose is not a problem.
27:22 - A rare-earth magnet in a plastic bag helps. Or a couple of them.
28:22 - Pretty sure the jaws will need to be trued for each diameter; the scroll is not likely to be consistent.

You are right about the scroll being worn more at different diameters. It is pretty beat at 60 + years old.

I'd be careful around cutting anything off that friction ring, it's probably asbestos.

The spindle tapered bearings need to be under a slight preload or the cutting tool will deflect away from the work piece. Lathe spindle tapered roller bearings are usually set to 10 to 14 ounce inches of break away torque. This can be calculated and performed with a worm drive clamp to hold the end of the string wrapped around the shaft and a tiny spring scale or a lever and a weight . So if the smooth part of the spindle is 2.00" you would need 6 or 7 ounces of pull to get the spindle to rotate from a stop. I know you know this but hopefully this spurs you into doing it.
My bosses used to yell at me for taking too long. But when it failed and came back. I was not doing it for free. I got to the point I just ignored them and did it the correct way anyway. I had one boss take my tools from my hand to do it himself. I put my tools away and pushed my tool box out into the parking lot. I never went back. I wish employees at Boeing had cajones like I had. I had a new job the next morning.

With you all the way. I walked out on three jobs in my working life with no job to go too, due to how those companies operated. And I was the senior Chief Engineer on site at two of them. You have to stand up for your principles; if they actively go against them, then you need to leave.
