  • The workshop manual recommends buying a new case when the needle bearing wears out in the fourtrax trx 300 as they can be very difficult to remove. But a new case is expensive, so using this trick, the old bearing can be easily removed in minutes without damaging the case.

Marty, I like your channel. You are pretty handy around the house. I saw an easier way without the impact of pounding. You have already welded your all thread rod to the bushing. Next make a plate that will fit in between the stud that has a hole in it a bit bigger than the all thread. Slip it onto the diff housing and use then tighten the big nut down to gently pull what is left of the bearing out. Home-made puller!!

There is need for a welder. The pin that hold the bearing. Can be removed with a flat tip screwdriver and needle nose pliers. Turn the bearing with your finger. Until you see the end of the pin. Bend it up and grab it with the pliers. And just pull it out. The bearing will slip right out. This is from the technical manual.

I ended up having to buy a new case. I was able to stick weld a bolt in there but every time it would break off the top part of the bearing casting it was welded too. Did this about 3 or 4 times getting a little more each time until finally the aluminum casting broke where that little hole is. I just decided to spend the $200 for a new case. It was an honest attempt though!

Vice grips work good too if you dont have a welder, just beat the bearing out enough to get a grip on it then use a punch and punch the vise grips outward and the bearing should come with it.

The weld would help shrink the bearing race some too

Thanks Marty for this vid. I love your channel mate but this vid in particular means I can stop scratching the old dome. I had been thinking what the hell am going to do, to get that old bearing race out.

Take a small flat tip screwdriver. Bend the clip up, then with a needle nose pliers. Grab a pull it out, this is the proper way to remove it. No welder required

Looks a lot like my Kawasaki KLF300, EXCEPT that it has a roll pin in a blind hole retaining the bearing. I've never seen one used where you couldn't drive it out the other side. May consider drilling a small hole thru the case to create an escape for the roll pin.

Ohh that took about five or ten minutes. Your ass got lucky, those bearings must have wallowed out the bearing seat just a smidge from being toasted. Your video wasn't helpful at all.

If you're having trouble, just put the case in the oven for a while to expand the alloy and pour cold oil on the shell, it should pop out, I've done a few of them and never had much trouble
