    Love these gouache tutorials, Anna. The layering is fun to watch because there's a single moment when you add one layer where the whole painting just comes alive and jumps off the page. It's magical in a way. Keep the tutorials coming. The background music was so relaxing.

    I'm working my way through your tutorials and painting a stack of cards which have been waiting just for this. I've always struggled with painting flowers, but I'm surprised and happy with how my sunflower field turned out - it will make a nice Easter card. My roses however need more practice - you made it look so easy! I enjoyed painting the leaves anyway, and I might try that one again 😊.

    Wow this is stunning and it looks so effortless! How is your yellow so opaque? My gouache set is pretty watery, so I’m wondering if I need a nicer pallet?

    • @JournalAway
      @JournalAway  Год назад

      Aww thank you for saying that! ❤️ It rarely feels effortless in real life, though 🤣
      I had the same problem with my old gouache set so I do think that switching to higher quality paints might help. However, before doing that, I'd make sure that you're using enough paint and only the tiniest necessary amount of water. It took me a while to get used to the amount of paint that's necessary for opaque layers!

    So very pretty. I am such a beginner but am giving it a try. Can you please advise what type brushes…the minimum are needed to learn? I especially have trouble with thin lines. What is a good liner brush? Thank you!

    • @JournalAway
      @JournalAway  3 месяца назад

      I'd say that 95% of the time I use round brushes size 4 and 6, flat brush size 6 or 8 and a fine detailing brush. I like to use those tiny detailing brushes for fine lines and the sizes are usually marked as 2/0 or 3/0 which is smaller than size 0. With gouache, watercolor brushes work well! 😊 So if there are no dedicated gouache brushes, look for something that is meant to be used with watercolors.

    Hi! I really enjoyed doing it. Only when I painted the sunflowers I couldnt find a yellow with substance, and the green transpired. I didnt use a single drop of water 😢. Is this maybe because of the material's quality (the gouache painting tubes). Thanks!

    • @JournalAway
      @JournalAway  Год назад +1

      Ohh that can sometimes happen! I think the quality of the paints definitely affect the opacity. You could try to add a white layer first and then apply the yellow on top of it. It can help to prevent the background colors showing trough 😊

    • @JournalAway
      @JournalAway  2 года назад +1

      Oh, that's surprising to hear! I feel like watercolors can be very expensive here and the difference in quality is much more noticable than in gouache paints. I really hope you'll be able to find some cheaper gouache paints one day! ❤️

    Hi, please could you tell me how you paint light colours over dark colours? Say white over dark green. The green just comes through when I try it and then ruins my painting! Thank you

    • @JournalAway
      @JournalAway  Месяц назад

      I sometimes do two or three layers if the paint doesn't seem to stay opaque! Also, using only the tiniest bit of water in the white paint helps to keep it thicker. The quality of the paints affects too. I hope these tips help! :)

    • @JournalAway
      @JournalAway  4 месяца назад

      Yes, I do it all the time but I find it quite difficult if the colors are very old (to the point of cracking). Sometimes it might also be difficult to get pigmented paints if you revive them.

    can I ask did you add any water to the paints?

    • @JournalAway
      @JournalAway  7 месяцев назад

      Yes I do! With gouache, I add much less than with watercolors, but you'll notice that the consistensy of the paints is way too dry (and leaving dry brush marks) if there is not enough water.

  • @edavar6265
    @edavar6265 2 года назад

    Why do you always mix colors in the same compartment? Wouldn't old paint there cause the new color to be off or is it an intended technique?

    • @JournalAway
      @JournalAway  2 года назад +2

      Whenever I can, I simply like to use the bigger compartment for mixing, haha 😄 I don't really care too much if there's a little bit of old color underneath if I'm going darker or using similar tones (in these paintings many of the green colors are created mixing the same few paints so in that case using the old paint is intended). However, if you want to work with a completely different color or keep a tone very bright (like the yellow and red in this video), it should be mixed in a new cleaner place to avoid muddy tones.

    are you letting it dry at all in between the different layers?

    • @JournalAway
      @JournalAway  Год назад

      I usually mention in the videos when I let the whole thing completely dry before continuing! :) Some details don't need extra drying time or if you work on different parts of the painting, it's enough time for the other parts to dry. But usually I have a small break between the background and starting with details.

    • @JournalAway

      I'd say that it dries fairly fast 😄 You'll need to wait a bit between layers, but gouache painting in general uses less water than watercolors so the paper doesn't get soaked in the same way

    thought this was like a beginner tutorial but feels more like you should know how to paint in the first place. My leaves look like a mess and my flowers looked like random blobs circles. No instructions on how to even do the flower and why colour was placed where :(

    • @JournalAway
      @JournalAway  Год назад +2

      Awww I'm sorry you felt like that :(
      If it makes you feel any better, I think that creating a succesful painting right from the start sounds absolutely impossible to me (it surely wasn't the case with my first painting trials, haha). I'd advise you to just play with the paints freely and try different things to get the feel for it first. Learning the correct water/paint -ratio and training hand-eye-coordination takes some practice and it's very difficult to teach. And when it comes to painting flowers and leaves, there're countless of ways to do it and what I showed in the video is not the only way.
      People have very different approaches to painting and mine is quite easy-going, which is why I sometimes struggle to explain what I did exactly and why. Sometimes you just go with the flow and do what you feel like the painting needs, and it's also a skill that develops overtime :)
