    Cloudview, this is one of the very few times where I can honestly say that Buddy was playing with two musicians that were actually on his level of musicianship and the results are breathtaking. Buddy seems extremely pleased with Tom and Barry's performances here. This was a real treat thank you for this gem!

    Cloudview! So good to see you back with "new" Buddy Rich stuff! You da man! :-) Hope your still playing your butt off on those drums! Long live Buddy my friend. I must say though; as much as I like this performance, the studio version captures more of Buddy's subtlety on the hi-hat and snare and for me is more musically appealing. That version has more dynamic contrasts. Sometimes he got a little carried away on these live TV performances. Anyway, we share the same love for his singular genius.

      @@cloudview747 cloudy. I may have asked this before, so forgive me. I was reading Torme's book, and it mentioned one solo, the Newport Jazz Festival of 1965, which has never been posted, but it must exist. What do you know about this one? Buddy allegedly said he was done with that one, that everything he could say was said then, something like that. Would be magic to finally get to hear that.

    • @cloudview747
      @cloudview747  3 года назад +2

      @@jazzsnare Newport 65 is the Holy Grail of Buddy Rich audios for all BR collectors, for the reason you say. Buddy flat out said it was the drum solo peak of his entire career. What is frustrating is that in the Meriwether discography it says that the huge Newport 65 Fest was definitely professionally recorded. But it also says that only "select titles were released to Voice of America" for possible broadcasting. So who knows? Maybe the tune Buddy soloed in was never given to Voice of America? Or maybe it was, but Voice of America decided not to broadcast it? In any case, I have been collecting since the 70s, I have met and interacted with tons of BR collectors, and I have ALWAYS asked for Newport 65. Nobody has it.

    other than the horrific decisions by musical ignoramuses to choose the worst camera angles at the worst possible times, combined with incredibly contrived and unnaturally loud applause mix levels, this is a fantastic performance by all three musicians.
    Buddy's groove with the high hat is phenomenal. But as we all know, we aren't surprised!

      I have often been baffled by camera and direction choices on musical performances. In this case... it's like they always show the person who is not playing the thing you want to be seeing...they literally do the opposite. They show each person playing time, and cut away whenever something stands out... it can really eat at you if you let it. ... but holy cow are these three burning it up. I'm glad to have a video at all.

  • @joecaroselli5858

    As I always say, I personally liked Buddy's sound on his Rogers set the most, around the first two years of his new big band. Even though I have two Ludwig kits myself and really like their products, I didn't love that sound for Buddy in the early 80's. Don't get me wrong, he still sounded fantastic...but different. After Rogers, I like his Slingerland sound best with (forgive me Bud Slingerland) the Fibes snare!l! His Slingerlands played by the master, sound great here in this video... snare too. I remember seeing an ad in a Gretsch book where he actually endorsed "K Zildjian" cymbals, but that was very short lived. That sound would be much too dry for him. Anyway, our terrific pal Cloudview continues to show his tremendous devotion yet once again with this astounding video. Thank you so much.

    Cloudview, wonderful to see you back in action delivering yet another golden nugget from our Drum Wonder and National Treasure!
    For all those naysayers who say that Buddy always hogged the spotlight...this is all they need to see to knock down that house of cards. Buddy's solo was shorter then Tom and Barry's and you could see how happy he was working in this trio and he actually seemed to enjoy himself more in this format where he was able to sit back in the pocket and enjoy two other Masters at work. I can't recall ever seeing him so pleased at the end of a performance. Buddy was spectacular as always, but that bass solo by Tom is one of the best I have ever seen. Jaco Pastorius was an obvious influence on him. Tom was so musical and melodic here and Buddy seem to be so happy just going along for the ride keeping a perfect pulse and putting us on the edge of our seats. Just awesome!
    Btw, if anyone knows this you probably would Cloudview; this is 1977 and I was wondering if this was one of the very last times we would see Buddy on a Slingerland kit before the Ludwig endorsement with the 6 ply shells? I really think his slingerland 3 ply shells sounded better than the tone of the six ply Ludwig kit he had, but this Slingerland kit might be a 5 or 6 ply because they also switched to heavier shells with no reinforcement rings about the same time, but that particular detail would be a pretty difficult mystery to solve. However, this kit does sound closer to the six ply sound to my ears (maybe just tuned higher) but still cool to still see him behind a Slingerland kit in 1977.
    Sorry for the babbling just making up for lost time lol. Thanks, Bob

      @cloudview747  3 года назад +1

      Definitely, Buddy loved MUSIC, and was very happy to sit back in the pocket, driving and supporting other great players. This was true by the way throughout his ridiculously long career.
      The date of this was Sept 1977. Wasn't Buddy's switch to Ludwig May 1978, when he did that unaccompanied solo on Carson?

    • @polara01
      @polara01 3 года назад

      @@cloudview747 Yes, you are correct Buddy's Ludwig kid didn't pop up until the middle of 78 I believe at least in videos so what you have here might be the very last actual film where buddy is playing a slingerland kit as a slingerland endorser at least on film anyway so that is very special I think kind of sad though because I like the slingerland drums better I think they just sounded better probably because these were still most likely 3-ply shells but even the slingerland 5ply shells I think sounded warmer than the Ludwig 6 ply just my opinion.
      I took the liberty of researching this show and looked up the Carson Show discography and this Show (#3759) was taped or aired on September 6th 1977 and featured George Carlin as well but I could not find the show as it has not been officially released in any of the Tonight Show remaster sets sadly, so this is probably the only copy floating around other than in the Time/Warner vault which there is an obvious mint Master just waiting to be made on disc. Who in the world knows when they will ever get around to that ever? Just like so many of the Buddy Hidden Treasures waiting to be excavated by hungry fans but this is pretty darn good and the audio is excellent so I am very grateful for this I just did a little scouting around to see if I could help in any way...you never know... I will play the role of Igor in your Castle anytime Cloudview :
