If I remember right (I might not) he was part of a minority group who disliked the way the parasites were treated. They believed the stories that they were a ravaging horde taking over planets was a story made up to justify using them as slave labor. The human was an attempt to free them only to blow up and turn out the original story was true.
This martian really just caused an outbreak because he couldn't use his brain to just ask can I join you guys.

I really like how the show expands on the source material of the comics and makes the storylines more compelling this way. You can understand Shapesmith's desire for wanting to explore the stars if given the chance, but at the same time you don't feel sorry for him since he left an innocent man to die on an alien planet and take his place, which lead to untold disasters for his people and now Earth. You can tell that he never meant any ill intentions with his actions, but it doesn't change the fact that what he did was horrible and that he never once considered the consequences of his actions.
If I had a dollar for everytime ben Schwartz played a character with selfish desires yet has no consideration of the consequences
It’s strange that the show wanted him to have no consequences, because Invincible killed a whole bunch of other Martians just to save the one that nearly got Earth enslaved.

I absolutely love that they inverse the trope of having the "nice guy" like him instead of relatable being selfish.
Same, Shapesmith is friendly, charismatic and all but is a little self-centered which can cause his downfall. He redeemed himself a little when shielding the Guardians though.
That's usually how many Nice Guys are. They genuinely want to do good and will do anything to appear in goodwill, even if it means throwing other people under the bus if they have to.

I love that trope, where during a flashback, the scene, either pauses, or the music stops due to an interruption in the story.
Same, it’s hilarious when the tone changes to remind us the other characters that listening have a different take on the story. Like how messed up Shapesmith’s actions were on Mars.

Ben Schwartz only plays one role, but he does a really good job at it
I would say that this role is actually different than his usuals. I wouldn’t compare Shapesmith to Dewey Duck or Randy Cunningham to be honest.

It’s funny how Shapesmith tried to elaborate on his childhood and pursuit of his dreams but just shows how self-centered he acted. That’s why no one on the team was bothered until he mentioned he left Rus to thousands of alien parasites.
However, you can tell Shapesmith turned over a new leaf a little bit when becoming a hero. Even if it wasn’t intentional. I wonder what consequences he got as Cecil said.

Funny enough they were all surprised in the comic, Cecil is a lot more competent in the animated series. Also they missed the part where Shapesmith actually planned the squids uprasing because he thought they weren't evil, he was an activist of a group that was fighting for their rights and stuff. Big shock, they were wrong. All of it was LITERALLY his fault.
I swear Ben Schwartz must be contractually bound to only voice characters that have blue in their color palette

Haven’t really been watching Invisible, but I’ve seen clips and discussions, so the sheer surprise I felt after clicking this and realising THAT’S BEN SCHWARTZ
I honestly thought it was going to be a situation where the martians sent Shapesmith to be either a spy for them or they found Russ infected and sent him to replace him while they dealt with the real Russ, only for him to turn out to be way more power than they expected.
I like how Samson is surprised, like it's not obvious they would have already found out
I really love the costume designs in Invincible. Shapesmiths looks really good.
The worst part is Shapesmith literally couldve just asked to go with them. Its not like they didn't already have a crime fighting Martian on Earth before.
And even if he couldnt ask, what's stopping him from turning into a tiny bug and hitching a ride? Its not like those astronauts would notice him when theyre focused on leaving.
Yea, you can the smile on the real Russ Livingston's face before he gets clubbed. I'm sure they would have let him onto the rocket, especially considering they already made contact with Martian life prior to this to know they aren't some singular hive mind. At worst, a spy, but saving Russ' life would have gone a long way toward building trust, as would Shapesmith's earnest joy of space exploration corroborating his story.
