  • Whilst not a common attack, especially man-to-man, this is a useful starting point for anyone who is interested in learning the basic principles of escaping from, and countering, all manner of locks and holds.

I know that this is not a common attack, but of all the stuff I have learned in my 8 years and 4 styles of training in martial arts, the escape from a wrist grab is the only thing I have ever had to use in real life. Basically some dude who had been acting aggressively (verbally) towards me and my mates grabbed my wrist and said to me "come over here" - 'here' meaning the place where his mates were wating to back him up. I used this kind of stuff and his attitude soon changed! Excellent vid.

I never believed in wrist lock releases, but the way you utilise them put them in a different perspective. thanks for the enlightenment

British? I have noticed many instructors posting on here are British, would make one think twice before taking on the island, LOL. Many respects to the instructor, will favorite and am sure to learn quite a bit, thanks very much for posting :).

@Emelai These particular releases are fundamentally from Hapkido - or my interpretation of them at least. But I am sure that they can be found in other arts too.

Even people who don't like or believe in "wrist locking" should consider the techniques shown here to defend someone grabbing your wrists when in a boxing stance. This guy looks decent wouldn't mind training with him

I certainly don't ever forget about the other hand! That's the immediate danger hand. I know where the other one is that's holding onto my wrist, so that's not really the immediate threat. Anyone who has ever trained with me will confirm that I always stress that fact. To be honest, I'm not gonna give you my hand to grab anyway. And in any case, it's a pretty unrealistic attack for one bloke to use on another one. It's more likely, however, if I have a weapon in that hand, and the other guy is trying to restrict what I can do with it. Or, perhaps, in a grappling situation where one guy grabs another guy's wrist prior to attempting to throw him to the floor.
So you did Kuk Sool for four years? What do you do nowadays?

6:20 could’nt you bait this wrist release for a clean hook?

T9MOTHY : Yes of course. But what if you work in a Hospital and a mental patient suddenly grabs one of your wrists. Does your Job Description allow you to punch his lights out?

I trained in kuk sool for about 4 years, I’m sorry to say but it’s pretty much useless. They ignore the fact that people have two hands, they only concentrate on the one grabbing hand and they ignore the punching one,
