For your older students, if they have any Skeletal problems or impact the Jaw or Skull with a reverse blade strike they will break their wrists, and or hand, if they aimed at their opponents neck side just a finger or two toward the Carotid with either a Blade or Hammer Fist even with moderate hard impact will immediately shut the assailant brain off long enough to separate an retreat. I really enjoy your videos.

Thanks for your comments. As you can see from the video, strikes are delivered to high, middle, and low targets. Depending on the level of threat, the defender would decide where to aim his/her counter strikes. As you will have seen from events in London, both machete and knife attacks are pretty common nowadays. Which means that I would prefer to keep all of my options 'on the table', so to speak!

Your instructions are good! Those people in the back ground with canes in their hands should be practicing! Thank you.

We were there all day, and they did in fact get lots of chance to practise, it's just that we didn't film them doing so!

Give it whatever label you like. Actually, it's my own interpretation of cane defence based on training for many years in the Filipino Martial Arts, Korean Martial Arts, English Singlestick, French Street Cane (street version of Canne de Combat), Pierre Vigny's and others methods.

Excellent video, thanks! Question: What is the best weight for agility and effective strikes in training and for the street? What is your cane's weight? Thanks again.

      Steve Richardson:
Thanks Steve. That particular cane is rattan. Quite light. Around 352 gms (or a little over 12 oz).
I have several canes, and the weights all vary, and that can change the way you might use some of them. My heaviest, I think, is a crooked head Oak cane, weighing 646 gms. More of a double handled use cane.

    He seems unusually quick.
Does anybody know the diameter, type of wood, and weight of that cane?

Kolon999 Hello my friend. The cane is Rattan (not to be confused with hollow Bamboo). The diameter is one inch, and it is quite light weight. I'll try to weigh it if you'd like me too? Being light, it does allow single hand use (which frees up the other hand for striking and snaring), rapid multiple strikes, and a quick change of direction which, to be honest, is my preference.

Thanks for this great vid. It will come in handy as I use walking stick for my knee arthritis. I walk my dog every night and there’s plenty of dodgy characters about they always ask for spare change or cigarettes which I don’t smoke or carry money with me. Sometimes they get verbal, angry abussive only a matter of time they will attack so yes I’ll be practicing and ready. Also I’ve got into many arguments over dog walkers aggressive dogs who want to hurt my dog. One day might need cane to fend off one of these nasty ppl or dogs. I do carry a torch very powerful one to shine in eyes which gives me bit of chance to getaway or give them a little well let’s say they might think twice about picking on easy targets lol.

Thanks for your feedback Barry. I'm pleased you found the video useful. A good stick in the right hands can be better than an equaliser, but can actually be a neutraliser.

Speak less have them work on the techniques themselves. I'm trained I. Kali and even I didn't capture all he said. Sometimes instructors are so anxious to show what they know forgetting that novices have difficulty mastering even the simplistic if maneuvers
I had this happen to me recently training a fellow martial artist with years of experience.

Does not work for old people who NEED a cane. It only work for 64843682358 years old Chinese Kung Fu masters who still can move like they were 16.

This is not teaching anything. Yes he has knowledge of kali, but the poor people are just holding a cane to feel included, but the material is just flown by to impress his customers...
