Let us know of you're still making games in Dreams and what you're currently working on. If you're moving on to other engines are you still using Dreams as a prototyping tool? And with Animation 2.0 announced by Mm does this improve Dreams end game slightly - anyone becoming TV or movie makers? Let's chat!

As someone who will never be a professional game maker, Dreams is a great, fun tool to get my ideas out of my head. I will still be creating as long as i can (dont have too much yet, not enough time). Before Dreams i used to design board games in my free time, Dreams took things a step up. My mind is always coming up with new ideas, i just need more time to actually do it. I will say, i'm very disappointed in the number of people that just up and left because of an announcement that didnt change Dreams in any way. It could still be tons of fun, but not if everyone leaves.
All that said, Animation seems to be the future. Since you can create in Dreams, then upload to RUclips, you dont require the player base of Dreams. I do have some ideas for some animation, but i have zero knowledge of animating. We'll see.

I'll be forever thankful to MM for introducing me to my passion of game design. If anyone wants to see my game, I make post about it often on my RUclips channel.

I’m currently learning how to model in Blender and how to make games in UE, and I would say that Dreams was a great first step for me!
Ever since I was a kid, I loved playing editing/making your own games types of games and Dreams so far is THE BEST in my opinion, especially since it goes a little further beyond JUST editing stuff.
It’s nice to hear about other people wanting to move to other engines and realizing that what they learned in Dreams was really helpful.

It's a shame. For it to gain the traction it needed as a playstation only thing, sony would have needed to promote it heavily, it to be a free utility, and have a way for people to sell their creations on the psn store. It was fun for a while though.

I wanted to design it to be a inspiration piece designed to inspire more people to be creative and improve their own skills, with the news of the support for dreams being cut I redesigned it slightly to still serve those purposes but to a much greater degree. A last hurah if you will

I'm pretty sure down the line there will be cases of people using Dreams for a job presentation, brand marketing, music creation or whatever with (hopefully) successful stories to tell.
Martin Nebelung to this day seems to be at the forefront of thinking of Dreams as a tool more relevant than ever.

Truthfully I never saw much reference to it as soon as Dreams formally launched. I asked in 2020 if that was still the thinking and they said "they still had 10+ years to implement". I didn’t even know about this game until this month as it was free on PS+. I’ve been an Xbox/PC guy my entire gaming life. Recently got a PS5 as a present to stem my complaints about not being able to play PS exclusives. I hate the exclusives ecosystem and I’ve always been interested in game dev. Even though live service support is ending, I’m thinking I might just try my hand at this. Maybe try to faithfully recreate some levels from Halo: CE, which is my favorite game, as a hobby project (yeah, super original idea, I know…). I used to fuck around with Project Spark back when that was still a thing and had a great time.

Don’t know if anyone feels how I do, but I was a huge LBP fan from about 13 to 20 years old. When dreams was announced I was excited but the development was so long that I never got to get my hands on it simply because life went in and changed.
I gave my os4 away and worked more. I really wish I could’ve given a lot of time to dreams during the peak times I was playing LBP2 or right after that time waiting on dreams. It would’ve been amazing I think but it seems almost tragic that it never reached its audience in time. So I’m left in this limbo, never really knowing what came of it besides apparently failing.
Videos like this are great to paint a good picture, as objectively I still think they made an amazing creative tool. I only wish now it instead was released as a game engine available on PC as well so it could continue to live. Maybe a situation like blender as an open source game development tool but it seems apt people mention Godot because that’s pretty much fulfilling that position. Still I believe dreams was onto something that justified its existence. We just probably will never see the peak of what that was sadly.

Great video! Although I would like to add one perspective that kinda seems to be getting lost underfoot of late:
There were (and still are) those creators who never had any intention of using this as a "stepping stone" into anything: People who would never even have given 3D game design or music making or animating or 3D sculpting a try because they had already been scared off by the "professional" software. For those people, Dreams was maybe the most valuable gift, because it gave them an inroad into something they wouldn't even have considered accessible to them. This group, arguably, also used to be at the very heart of Mm's philosophy of "de-mystifying" the act of creation, although the focus & discussion have noticeably shifted towards people wanting to tranisition into "professional game-design".
In some ways, it's these creators that get hit the hardest, because there's really nothing at present to fill the shoes of Dreams as a playful, low-barrier-entry suite of comprehensive creation tools. And even Mm themselves seem to have abandoned that approach, at least to a certain degree, by scuttling Dreams (personally speaking, I wouldn't expect their next IP to be heavily creation-focused, but we'll see).
Someone who has wanted to turn up game-design into a career was ALWAYS going to have to diversify their toolkit, as there probably wasn't a way around - eventually - ending up using Unreal or Unity. But there are lots of creators, myself included, that are never going to transition to any of those "proper engines": I didn't make any games in Dreams as preparation for something bigger -- it's rather that, without Dreams, those games wouldn't have been made in the first place. And I think there are a lot of people in the same situation.
So I'll keep creating in Dreams. simply because there's nothing else (yet) that will scratch the same itch. Having a way of getting my creations out of Dreams, if only for "safekeeping" and with zero interest in monetisation, would have been amazing, and I am still disappointed that this option has never materialised. But the biggest disappointment to me is how the fate of Dreams could impact the entire idea of making creation accessible to anyone and everyone, and we can only hope that somebody else picks up the slack!

    • @UglySofaGaming
      @UglySofaGaming  Год назад +2

Great comment - I'm right there with you as one of those people without a home to go to for game making without Dreams, I don't have the time or the desire to learn a professional engine and my games only exist because of Dreams.
Playstation may have got cold feet but Dreams was a great idea, UGC is a big market and if it's not Roblox or Epic someone will one day make something as approachable as Dreams.
At the moment I'm not sure if I want to continue making the game I had planned, or possibly turn it into a podcast instead.

Well said! I also think its a compliment to what MM did with Dreams that the conversation shifted from "Complete beginners can make comprehensive creations in Dreams" to "Where can I go to continue creating after Dreams?" MM is bringing new, fresh talent to the industry in spades, and basically decreased the barrier to entry for game development. Games are games no matter the platform or how they're made, after all.

I've been working on a Resident Evil fan game all year. I've had a few weeks break from it and need to go back and finish. I had a negative vibe over it regarding copyright and want to go back to it and rebrand into a nene copyright game. Struggling to feel inspired to go back right now though mostly because it was taking a lot longer than I originally predicted. And during that time there was the negative loss of players and everything that's happened regarding dreams not going any further. I've never understood why people expected to be able to export games because its similar to little big planet in the way stuff you create is only accessible on its unique server.
I've tried to be successful with it over the couple of years with last year's Bio-Shark and Dino bounce. My most successful game being ghostbusters. But I have always felt my profile never took off the way I hoped

The skills you learn in Dreams for asset creation and logic are non-transferable outside of the most basic understanding of design principals.
