How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

This was such an epic project that took literally months of planning and research to pull off but we couldn't be happier with how things turned out. If only everything at The Land was going as smoothly!...also, if you made it to the end of the video 👀...what are your thoughts?! You guys have been asking for this for yearssss and it's finally coming!! Can't wait to share more with you SOON!
Hi T.T.C.E.L ❤
@@JayMills-08 Heyyyy :)
Hey guys! Love the new deck. It looks perfect for an early morning coffee. Would it be possible to create a removable railing for the window issue? That way it can be temporarily removed if need 😉
I call my break time, T&T
Tea and toke time
😂
Great job guys
Hey guys. Building inspector here. Put in the railing then when the house is finagled remove the railing. That simple. We all know home owners do this all the time on safety items but once your project is finaled no one cares. The fact is there are laws and safety codes in place we can’t ignore but once our job is done you can change anything you want and no one will ever know or care.
This also sounds to me like the inspector is trying to be a hero and is calling stuff not in the code book. railings for windows could be done after the drywall inspection so not sure why he is calling this on a framing inspection. However , I'm an inspector in the US, but I would be nice to finally here a story where Canada is the crazy one for a change.
Are you a Canadian inspector? As a US architect, I'm very confused how the requirement for a guardrail installed down the road would cause a framing/ MEP rough-in inspection to fail. Maybe it is just the camera angle, but the bottom of the glazing also did not appear to be within 457mm (18 inches) of the floor that would trigger safety glass in the US (International Residential Building Code Section R308.4.3).
I did this with a front deck. The railing blocked the view so hard and the drop was only 4ft. I jumped it all the time up and down. The railing and stairs got repurposed into a laundry stand.
Not to mention when one falls how would any part of you reach up that high to break the window.
Well, until it comes time to resell. Sometimes those things come back up but I mostly agree.
Make it out of high grade clear acrylic. So it won’t block the view
“Shut up and get to work” 😂😂😂
Dumpy is a gem
He really is LOL
Everybody needs a Dumpy in their life🥰
Shout out to Dumpy for keeping Todd focused on 1 project!! Tyler's Canadian accent comes out when he's frustrated. Todd's exterior decorating style rivals his interior style.
A suggestion: Put a planter box across the width of the window with a trellis that reaches the top of the window. Plant a few vining plants to climb the trellis so that when you biff it and hit the wooden trellis covered in vines you'll have a softer landing and the window is protected from your clutziness. When the inspector comes back , accidentally bump him so he falls down the stairs as a means of testing the strength of the trellis.
😅
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Now that is mean😊 but what a great idea.😮🎉
A little mean, but funny. I'm just so sick of government pettiness and nitpicking. They don't need to control everything. They should put more of that attention into housing that is old and falling apart and bring those places up to code. Those places are the most hazardous.
Omg i’m laughing so hard. Thats brilliant
I feel like Dumpy is the handy dad you want around for everything! He’s really becoming a mainstay on the channel, I look forward to seeing you guys get stuff done together 😊
I agree a real team player
You guys are doing great! Is your handyman’s name Dunphy or Dumpy? Lol! 😆
Love the D-man❣️😍
D man is just so charming. He looks like a good friend.
@@denisesargent1440 He’s not a handyman. He’s their contractor. It’s Dumpy, and he’s fantastic! 🙂
The contractor you are working with is so cool, his approach is just so chill.

@@tylerandtodd I’d love an interview with Dumpy when TWTT starts Season 2!
The place looks amazing you two!! I am Loving the new deck it looks incredible!! I'm with you Tyler, there are too many codes and BS rules that we have to follow building a home... Hang in there guy's, you are doing Amazing and this dream of yours will be finished before you know it ❤️ Don't Give up and try not to be discouraged, You got this!!
I love the banter between Todd and Dumpy. Sorry to hear about the inspection complications, but the deck/stairs are amazing and Todd did a great job making it look fab and comfy
We’re super glad there was no Meteoroid and body halving in this episode! Blessings dear ones🌱
As a senior gay who has been experiencing health and mobility issues for a while, i can't tell you how much i have enjoyed your videos since before you began your trip fixing up the RV. A lot of miles and smiles later, you two are like friends visiting me every Sunday. Thanks so much! So glad that Tangents will be back in the fall!!! ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜
Nice words... Todd &Tyler's videos are like fresh air. I enjoy their videos so much as you do. Blessings!!
You two are just fabulous and every week teach us all something new ,I can’t wait to see more of the off grid home ,your lake house is fab to ,it’s nice you have an escape with the lake house stay well and look after each other ❤❤❤
Bless you.❤
Awww I love how dumpy is still helping you! I also love that he seems to get your humour and chuckles with you❣️
We're really enjoying working with him. We have a way healthier work/life balance because it's not on us to do absolutely everything. Many hands make light work!

@@elissalaurin1955 Many carpenters don't wear their rings on the job. There are ways of getting in trouble like getting the ring caught on something or getting an electrical zap through the ring. It's safer without it.
Just want to add my two-cents worth. The best part of the view through the window will be coming down the stairs. Putting in a three-foot railing or whatever isn't going to make that much difference. There have been several suggestions of railing-adjacent ideas and some of them sound brilliant. And with Todd's design genius, this could come out to be a blessing in disguise.
Don't get hit by a meteorite guys! OMG so annoying!! How did the builders NOT KNOW THIS??? I have to build a deck soon so it was good to watch the process! Great job Todd! I love how much you get accomplished at your properties working together. I'd love a partnership like that.
Despite the stress you guys reveal, your videos are always relaxing and sweetly entertaining. There's something that can't really be described about your videos--your openness with each other and with your audience, your dogs, the scenery, the video editing and overall production--it's beautiful.
And your Squirrel❤
The dock and deck turned out "IN TRUE TODD" fashion GORGEOUS!!! And NEVER apologize for venting, you have to vent or you would explode. You two have so much going on and we are all here for you, so keep venting we have broad shoulders! Really love you guys, I wish you had more video's weekly, but really truly understand. Can't wait till the next one! Also, you guys are so lucky to have Duff, he is sooooo cool. He really seems to be a vessel of knowledge and so easy going. He just seems to fit in with you both. 🥰
You did such a great job, Todd. You’re amazing.
I have never seen you guys angry, frustrated, yes, but Ty was so angry I could see it in his eyes. I love you guys. Keep trucking!!
You guys could build the most decorative railing in front of that window. I can just see it in my mind. A thing of art!!
My Sunday is complete as Tyler and Todd are on youtube!!
Hope you enjoy the video!!!
@@tylerandtodd I always look forward to your videos as it seriously completes my Sunday afternoons, I miss u when your not on!
My favorite Sunday video…..actually…my favorite part of the day! The dock and deck and stairs are amazing! Also, Dumpy is a guardian angel you guys have needed! He’s the best! I love how all of you work so well together!
This old woman loves you guys and Dumpy. So chill and practical with his expertise. I never miss a Sunday…….love the deck/pier. Allways, Denise
It's a good idea to have a safety rail for the future kids who might run down the stairs playing chase, or when you and Todd play chase. ;)
I love how Dumpy gets your sense of humor.
Put in the railing. Get your final inspection. Remove the railing. End of story. Great looking deck. Alan
Best thing you ever did was hire this contractor!
You two are just too amazing❤❤❤
Lol, I think I am half in love with Mr. Dumpy! I love you interactions with him and his sense of humour is absolutely wonderful. Thank you three for sharing your journey with us.
My online patience with the arbitrary inspector findings would be unhinged. I also want to applaud your chill contractor. Finally so glad to hear that Tangents will be rolling out again in the Fall….at least for you guys.
It's good to vent - and don't worry, we put the expletives in for you.
😂
Right there with you. There were so many expletives! 🤬😂
@@ColletteC2106 Happy to help out!
"What's this called? Tape"🤣. I love your new construction guy! He puts up with being filmed and all the dialogue nicely. It looks wonderful!!!
My Sundays are just so much fun with Tyler & Todd and Dumpy and the two goldens - for some reason, I forget their names - it will come back to me in the next video - See you next Sunday!
Hey Tyler that was great venting! It is so important to get that out, rather than bottle it up. I cheered, because your anger really shone. And you weren’t dumping on us, you were sharing your frustration.
@Todd, what a beautiful space you created. Love the red chairs! ❤
I like Dumpy. "Did I ever tell you I don't like working with metal? Did I ever tell you I don't like working with wood?" "Carpentry all together!" He's a unique soul.😊 Inspection is way more difficult in Canada than here in the US. My late parents lived in Canada, and this is bringing back all the memories of the difficulties they experienced just buying a house! All the very best to you both. Just another adventure in life. ❤❤
Dumpie is a sweet guy and so helpful when it comes to helping out with work. You guys are so lucky to work with him. Very friendly and easy going guy. It will be a great idea to invite Dumpie for a Barby dinner on that beautiful deck on a Sunday. Thanks guys for the vlog. ❤😊
Everyone should have a Dumpy in their life, such a great guy. Well done gentlemen, and doggos ( for supervising) 🎉
You have been blessed having Dumpy around to help and teach you. You will pass inspection just not that day. You are both doing an amazing job. xxxx
It is so great to see Dumpy !! Love his sense of humor. It's Always great when you guys post a video And it's wonderful to see Charlie and Eddie.❤
So beautiful guys. You planned this so very nice. It looks amazing. I have to tell you though, I could not get work done working with Todd, those one liners and jokes and comments would have me rolling. I was in tears laughing during this video. He is that way almost in everyone. I also have to commend him for always having the positive attitude when you have a crisis come up. And Tyler, what you said in the first of the video about if something does come up, you will work it out. Always go into things with positive attitudes. We are who we are from our mistakes and how we learned things in this life. And always remember to live each day to the fullest we do not know what the next will bring. I know the boys love the dock and patio area. It is so beautiful. Thank you again for sharing with us all our here. Much love from Switzerland.
Howdy to Y’all! WOW! The deck & dock are Stunning! Sooo Fun! Your new Cabin on The Land is really fabulous as well! You both are Living Large and I LOVE your helper, and all the teasing! 😂Regards to Glass Windows & Potential Concerns…I would’ve been flustered too. But more due to All the Issues up to this point. You have been soo patient & strong! May I share something real? Years ago, before “Tempered Glass”, my brother was getting ready for a meeting. He was in a hurry, went to “push open” the Glass Shower Door, and fell thru it! The loud crash heard from downstairs, we thought fersure the roof had caved in. We thought he was dead! He was severely cut, rushed to ER, lucky to have not lost his knee nor leg. He healed and continued to play Sports, but it was scary. I love the Grandness of your Tower! But, after hearing the inspection dilemma, I could see the concern. Thats why they are called “Accidents”. The stupidest incidents can happen, like a headlock in between the banister rails.🤦🏻♀️You both have impeccable taste from a design perspective and will figure clever way for safety! Maybe a cool rustic looking, yet beautiful wood, wrought iron, or bronze planter box (narrow) in the window? Plants would love those gorgeous windows. I like the comment too-“make do” thru inspection, but “slip & falls”, especially on stairs, tho bizarre, is reality. As always, a simple thought. I love your Cabin Life! Both Places are so Magnificent🕊️! Thank you for Sharing! xoxo❤🎉
I know another setback is so frustrating for them, but this one has a reason. Tempered glass has been a requirement for a while, so stories like yours are fewer...which is the purpose, but the reasoning behind the need for the requirement is not as well known.
Excellent job boys and Todd you are a star! But Dumpy gets the off-the-charts Comet Award!! Enjoy your new homes!!!
That deck is incredible! Beautiful and functional. Thank goodness for Dumpy. And the landscaping! Todd, you amaze me with your vision and energy.
Todd here's the love Tyler asked us to give you. But, I don't need to be told to tell you what a great job your did, you never cease to amaze me with your talents and your magical way of getting it done!
Todd continues to absolutely crack me up every week! His quick humor, you understand, is the sign of a genius!
"Who's Joyce?" Oh Todd, I love your sense of humor !!! ☺😆🤣
"JOYCE" is the New Lesbian "GUARD" for Security 🤣
Love the deck and stairs guys. You amazed me with how quickly you built it without any disasters. Great work. Love how Todd throws in his hilarious comments.
Absolute adore Todd's landscaping skills, it looks stunning .. wish I could have something like this for my morning coffee, very well done
The landscaping is stellar, and I love the red deck furniture.
You guys scored big getting Dumpy for help in so much. The dock & deck turned out great! Bummer about the inspection! I KNOW what you'd be saying if it was just us, I totally get it about the window. You can vent with us anytime. I'd put in thick tempered glass before I'd put rails where I don't want them. I loved Tangents so I look forward to it coming back when you get time.
I agree. Bite the bullet. Get the glass. That way you won't have railings where you don't want them. Keep the lines clean. Then, if you tumble down the stairs, bounce up from the landing and smash through the glass, it will shatter, and you'll be saved. I only hope it's recorded because that'd be quite the feat. Might take several tries.
@@jackc5315 I just had an idea: they could buy enough tempered glass to form the railing and place it inside with a very minimal, decorative frame. They don't need to put tempered glass all the way up ($$$$) just high enough to protect a pedestrian from going through the window.
Hooray Todd and Dumpy! The deck and stairs are fabulous! 🎉🎊🫶
The new deck and dock are both gorgeous! Looks like a lovely place to enjoy a bottle of wine and watch the sunset! ❤
The dock you have is perfect especially since you will have to take it in for the winter. Being light and portable is the way to go. Floating docks can be dangerous and can get messed up if there are big waves. I love you boys and I also love Dumpy. He is a true Nova Scotia treasure. ❤
The vent is needed. You guys have had so many setbacks, I am actually surprised you are as positive as you are. BUT in saying that, the deck looks FANTASTIC! Movement forward, even if not in the place you thought, is still forward!
Keep going! You got this!!
The deck is just stunning. That human hands and brains can make such perfection in safety and beauty.
One railing before the staircase window was the only (annoying) problem? So, you almost passed a whole day of inspections. That huge too.
"We're extremely shallow." Taken completely out of context, it still made me smile big time. The dock can be seen from the moon, by the way. What a treat!
Tyler I felt your anger!!! You and Todd work so hard and it sucks to see you guys putting so much into your properties and constantly get knocked back down! Love you guys!
glad to see that dumpy is there to help and advise - not having knowledge of building "docks/decks"" his help and advise is enormous - what comes next - a boat? A quick comment about the inspection failure - please understand that the concern is not only for your safety but the safety of any quests you have in your home - yes it is an annoyance and an ass pain but realize it is for your safety and protection.
Probably no boat this year - we're going to be pretty busy with the land!
Okkkk, that too.
During restoration on our 1946 house, we installed large picture windows in the front of the house. The contractors made sure that it was tempered glass.
Tyler, I am glad you "railed" about the railing. It is important to vent these things before they erode our psyche. Todd, the stairs, deck and red chairs look amazing. And your dock is beyond words! You two made so much progress in this vid. I wish things had gone better with the land, but that's how our governments work these days. It can often be very exasperating. I'm glad you both took a couple of days to recover. We all need our down time. As always, love to you, the boys and Squirrel. -- Randy
Deep breath, Ty... Lots of good suggestions here for easy fixes that can be just as easily undone. Another suggestion? Another YTer was faced with the same problem due to having small children running around. They re-purposed a beautiful wrought-iron decorative grate that they put across the bottom of the window. Something like that in black would be gorgeous, but I'm sure not what the inspector had in mind! You will be fine. You guys always manage to get where you want to go! And for the millionth time, I wish I had a Todd, an amazingly creative and ambitious soul! The deck space came out beautifully! Yes...take a break. Much love ❤❤You know you can vent to us anytime.
I know it can be frustrating, but you two have worked so hard, and in the end, everything always turns out so beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
If you have to build a rail for the window on the stairs, maybe you can just make it into a little planter box. Plant some succulents that don’t get very big or need much water, but have it so it functions as the rail but looks decorative. Just an idea.
Your dedication and creativity shine as you craft the ultimate dock and deck. Here's to transforming the lakefront with joy and craftsmanship, making every moment a floating village delight!
And I'm am floating village life.
Ignore the weird things the world “makes us do” and just smile and ignore it and keep being love and fun just as you are. ❤️ Your blissing are endless. You’re two beautiful humans. ❤❤❤❤
Todd you and the contractor did a fantastic job on the deck! Looks amazing!
Without question, the two of you together can conquer the world. You guys never cease to amaze me with everything you do. .. both successfully and to completion.
Dumpy is a legend. You guys are amazing.
You are getting there, meteorites love it ❤

Ohhhh it's 100% necessary!
@@tylerandtodd OH! He Left Off Todds DUCKS! We Must Have DUCKS! 🦆

For the window at the bottom of the staircase, design a decorative iron grate that protects the whole window. It will look beautiful from the outside, as well.
I agree and if you put the frame on hinges it could be opened easily for cleaning
This was going to be my suggestion... just had to make sure someone else hadn't already mentioned it. I agree with @ildihughes2042 too... maybe one that opens like shutters, hinged on each side and a decorative clasp of some sort in the middle that's part of the design. BTW guys, love the deck!
I had the same thought! I envision it black wrought-iron, curly like vines growing. That was inspired by the conduit you can see on the left when he explains it at the bottom of the stairs.
Dumpy is an excellent man and he fits in with the two of you so well. It’s like you’ve known each other forever. The stairs, deck and dock are gorgeous. Thank you for this wonderful video. Cheers.
Todd!!!!!! It’s beautiful! Literally everything y’all do is gorgeous! GOALS!!!! And Dumpy is absolutely awesome and funny!!!
You guys!! That deck area is GORGEOUS. Great job Todd. Great job Duffy. Wishing you many, many beautiful sunset happy hours and morning coffees out there. ❤
Looks good. BTW - here in Houston and having built several homes I lived in, you would have to do the same thing in regards to railing in front of that window. The person who did the drawings should have know the code and caught that. You're probably right, some drunk probably at one time keeled over and went through a window and sued somebody, including some building code department somewhere and now, we have another code to live by.
Great job! Love the deck and the dock. You guys work hard, you should be proud!😊
Boys , the decking and dock look amazing. Sometimes you have to ask for a bit of help and Dumpy does a great job, looks like he takes the pressure off too! Enjoy your summer.
Huge sigh of relief when I say that Dumpy was at the helm!
Holy cow that is quite the dock! Incredible! Love it!
Canada is not the only country where ONE person can cause EVERYONE to suffer. Although, to be fair, ANY and EVERY architectural designer SHOULD have warned you about that window. Even I wondered about it when I saw what you were doing.
You could also install a cute, decorative wrought iron railing or narrow plant box across the inside of the window sill. Make a wonderful iron window insert as a piece of art...
Your carpenter is stellar
He’s their contractor, and he’s definitely stellar! 🙂
Yes my favorite couple, love your videos so much, wish you a great summer ahead❤️🇨🇦👍
Todd, what a professional and beautiful landscape job! The deck, stairs, rock wall - I'm so envious of your skill and talents!!
Wow, you two just never stop. I love the lake house so much! I can see it being your forever home. You've put so much into the larger property, but as you get older it will make nice vacation rentals. You two are amazing! Thanks for sharing your lives with us. Love to the furbabies & hi to Dumpie!
Just by way of commiserating, on Cape Cod my son in law had no choice but to replace multiple windows in his addition after paying for first set approved by building commission and permitted. First set did not have safety glass so he had to reorder windows and have one set removed and next set installed at a cost of thousands. At least you had a choice, not a great set of options but a choice none the less. Wishing you clear sailing from here on out. Thank you for making my Sunday.
Hi I’m here Joyce! 😂 sitting in the air conditioning wishing I could jump into that water! Love you guys!
LOL HI JOYCE!!!
I love how you guys do as much of the work you can. It is very inspiring. If i weren't disabled I would do so much improvement to my yard and home. That's how inspiring you both are.

"We are extremely shallow." No, Cupcake, you aren't shallow, but your lake is.
This comment made me smile 😊 💕🇦🇺💕
Me too 😂
Yes it’s Tyler and Todd time love seeing the progress you are making 👏
Dumpy is a gem! Love his chill attitude. The deck and the Adirondack chairs are really great. Never apologize for venting. You need to get frustrations out. When we had our inspection at our home, they too told us that we needed a rail in a space that didn't need it. We cobbled something together from off-cuts, then pulled it down after final inspection. It did feel like a big middle finger to the sometimes wonky laws. You guys are so awesome and you make my Sundays better..
Hi, I love your channel and its been wonderful to follow all your adventures. Can I just say what a lovely man your builder is...I want to bottle his chuckle and hear it on those bleak days when I need a smile😊. Sending best wishes from Edinburgh Scotland.❤
For Pete's sakes. It's always something. The window at the container house, I mean you want that view, so a bar or whatever would for sure mess that up. But having to replace that window would to me also be a pain in the ass. But after some thought I think replacing the window would be better option in the long run. It's still about the view. The dock looks great. Now, with all the work done on both places, which one would you pick to live in, I seriously don't know. The Lake house is mostly done for the most part. The container house I know when you guys get done it's going to look Beautiful as well. So, I don't know which house I'd want to live in. I want to give you both a big hug. I mean with all the ups and downs and the crap you've gone through. WHEW!!! Well, again, you've done your Magic. Thank you for letting us ride along on this journey. See you next Sunday. Take care! P.S. Hug the boys for me!👍
Great job guys on the deck, sorry about the bad news on the house. Don't lose faith it will work out. Big hugs to you!

hey guys... Much love and respect to the both of you.. Keep your head and don't let the bastards get you down.. Much love and respect. From Montana
Todd, the deck and landscaping is BEAUTIFUL!!!💚 You are a natural landscape designer! Well done!
The fast forward view of the lake makes it look like the beach is driving at top speed out over the lake. Nice special effect!
As for the window, it's about time for Tyler to buy a boxing ball!
If I tell you that you need to install rails for the dock, because a gusty wind might throw somebody into the water and drown, I'm sure you will kill me for it.
Hmm... That dock looks great. Next project for it would be to develop it into a lakeside marina, renting boats and having lots of paying guests...
And yes, I'd love for the Tangents to be back in the winter.
Hugs to both of you, and kudos to Dumpy for helping you.
