I swear, on Matt's tombstone it will say, "he was looking pretty rough" Edit: 7 years later and I'm still getting notifications about these comments I left. I've long since stopped watching CR but damn is it fun to come back and see time capsules like this.
Matt miming eating popcorn while Keyleth fluster-heals Vax is gotta be one of the funniest background events. It's good to be the DM, you can see your friends embarass your girlfriend while at the same time see romance happen in the story you're telling together.
"YOU! DON'T (smack) GO INTO (smack) ROOMS (smack) BY (smack) YOURSELF (smack) GOD (smack) DAMN IT!" (smack) - Percy, echoing the feelings of all of Vox Machina and the entire audience
To be fair, in this instance, Vax was explicitly told to go into that room alone, by the very sister who also made him promise to stay close. Yes, he should have waited a little longer to avoid getting his ass beat as badly as it was, but it's not 100% his fault he was there solo this time.
@@AlmostOtaku7 I mean what I'm hearing here is that Vex would be just as bad as her brother, were she a rogue /j. Gotta love that sibling dynamic of mutual bad influence XD
I took it as coming purely out of concern for his safety. Logically Percy knows Vax was doing what he was supposed to, but when trouble befell him it was enough to elicit this response
So... just watched blind spot 1x19 and there's this bit about DnD at the start. Ashley calls her colleague a wizard, who calls her an elf. Then she says "Actually, I'm a gnome cleric"... So got in a reference at last! So cool ;)
I love everything about this group. Matt laughing his ass off about Vax kissing Keyleth shows what kind of amazing people they really are. Also remember that Vex is a VORACIOUS flirt with every NPC and Travis always shrugs it away with a tease. There's no drama or weirdness that they bring in from the outside. Their characters are their own entities, and they control them as such. Just beautiful.
+Cadaverific Gaming Indeed. I think we're familiar enough with the cast at this point to know that Liam has probably consulted Matt about it off-stream by now (it's been pretty obviously brewing for many episodes) and they'd have amicably put a stop to it if there were any problem.
+gjaddajg I also thought Travis had a funny expression when Vax was giving Vex his cloak, to be honest that's the only time I noticed him with an odd expression towards Liam.
+gjaddajg Rewatching it I honestly don't think any one other than Liam and Matt knew this was going to happen. At least based off of all their reactions. I think Travis' comment was just a joke, they're always jabbing at each other. or maybe Liam is bored of rogue and they're just leading up to a traumatic death xD
randomnessocity Travis is Grog, and remember, above all else, Grog HATES SOAP OPERA CRAP! Travis doesnt wanna no about Vax-leth or shopping episodes or whatnot. He just wants to go hit something! Remember Shopping & Shipping? Although it was important to go thru the dialogue and evolve the characters, Grog does not require that much evolving. And when the DM does make it an event, it HAS to be surrounded by fighting (The Crucible and Grog potentially going to learn new skills there). I think thats what it was supposed to be but Travis ignored it for now.
@@quinnquazy876 Pretty sure she never thought she was the reason for Molly's death, a bunch of completely trash people just decided it was her fault and yelled at her on twitter and shit about how she caused his death.
“You know I’m in love with you” _raucous laughter, coughing, and going on break_ Cut to “In light of the attacks in France” That is a tone change alright.
Percy: Which one of my ancestors did you just shame to death? Scanlan: The one that possessed you! Percy: Okay fair. this is the best moment in this episode.
So funny, but at the same time, Percy is LITERALLY fighting off a smoke demon whispering in his ear and corntoring his thoughts, and is riding a high a vengence, and yet he STILL is concerned for his friends, still gets upset when his friend rushes in by himself and nearly gets himself killed AGAIN. Percy is such a sweetheart. Sadist, but a sadistic sweetheart. XD
I love Marisha’s note-taking. She has a tiny notebook that I think is where she writes notes on plot stuff, so whenever someone new shows up as Matt’s describing them, she always pulls it out to read to see if she knows them. I think that’s how she remembered it was Ripley too, it’s so cool.
I love how this trait of hers really shows well in campaign 2! I love it when people observe and write down anything that could be important (and it usually later on is), so I'm super happy when I see Marisha catch onto things and clues very quickly!
Every time I see comments of her note taking I get reminded of campaign 2 where she basically solved the whole campaign. Don’t watch it if you haven’t finished c2 but theres a video called ‘Marisha is proficient in note taking” and it shows clips of the things she’s referencing. Its insane.
Yeah he had done monster voices. But damn it was hard to listen to him! Even Laura at one point said something quietly to him about it and he was like "ehhh I'll be fine in a week" and she winced. Then he came back with a cup of tea after break. But he still didn't minimize his talking!! XD I think honestly he just loves this game that much.
That kiss had me screaming, & the moment being interrupted by Percy whacking Vax with a bunch of arrows for reckless endangerment yet again was almost better. Also, I love that Taliesin basically decided 'ok, now it's just unfair' by rolling that many Nat 20s, retired his own die from the rest of the game, and then proceeded to roll more Nat 20's with a different die. Like that's so cute & also such a nice thing as a player to say "Okay, someone else deserves a turn here" even if it's just your golden hand.
"Wait. As that happens, and my consciousness fades away, I don't say anything, but here's what I think in a split second. I think of my friends that I have spent so much time with. *I think of Keyleth, beautiful, walking under the trees.* I think of my twin sister..." OHMIGOD IT MAKES SENSE NOW. When he said that, I was like, *really *, you think of * her * before you think of Vex, but now-- I SEE THE LIGHT
I think Vex knew for a while When Vax was telling everyone about how him and Keyleth pretended to be married Vex was like "oh you did?" (Paraphrasing) in that tone lol
During the trial of the take, when Kash was getting annoyed with Keyleth, Tibs said "She's like that" and Keyleth said "Is that how people see me?" Vax looked at her and softly said "I don't". He was showing it way back then, but a lot of it is only caught in hindsight.
Oh yeah I forgot about that, not as awkward anymore cuz obviously Matt was in on it, idk of a player of mine just dropped something like that out of the blue I might be a bit weird about it
@@impastabowl2328 Not from my first watch through. I've listened again multiple times since, and have come to appreciate Liam's long games, like this one.
Why are people so weird about Vax and Keyleth? Or more accurately about Liam and Marisha playing there characters as having a romance? If this was a tv show and they were acting it wouldn't be weird. Vax is not Liam, Liam is not Vax it makes sense and makes for a good story. Plus they are all actors professionally and can separate character from self. Nobody acted like it was weird when Matt as Gilmore layed on the flirt with Vax so why is this weird? The answer is, its not.
If you mean the rest of the players then in a Q&A they will answer it, but it was the first time they ever experienced this in their game, hell I don't really see this between any players in any game I have been (because some people think it's weird, but for me could be entertaining like this). It's just those weird giddy feeling people get when they are in the middle of seeing an intimate moment and don't know how to react. Also they didn't act like that with Gilmore as it was just flirting and no one outright expressed love to each other yet. Also it could be between the two single player characters as opposed to the many DMs characters. If you mean the people in comments, then my previous long post can be ignored.
Well you see actors play romantic roles in every fucking movie, this is no diffrent. They are RPGing, they are making a store, just like any other book, movie or play.
To be fair, I'm pretty sure a lot of that was Marisha being legit flustered at this new development she wasn't prepared for. Her boyfriend and Sam teasing her didn't help.
1:57:06 That feel when you realise that if Percy had failed that first death saving throw, he would've been DEAD. Just imagine, Percy dead before facing the Briarwoods. That would've been horrible.
You never know. He tries to be as fair as possible, and the party has come VERY close to death several times already, like Vax against Anders, and in the Underdark escape Pike came one roll away from having her brain eaten by a Mindflayer. (Which I'm guessing would've made resurrection extremely difficult)
BigKlingy Yeah, I realize that. Same thing with the first fight with the Briarwoods, Vax came extremely close to dying. He had saving throw left, if I recall correctly. It does keep it exciting, the never knowing if a TPK is just around the corner.
I freaking love that Pike close call, because Matt breaks down when it happens. The second Percy kills the Mind Flayer Matt looks at the initiative order, takes a huge gasp and goes "oh my GOD! Because that guy was next, he was gonna kill Pike o.o". Perfect reaction of a DM who loves his PCs but would still kill them, no problem.
I think that its just some of the foes Matt/Critters choose(Critters when there is a vote) need serious work for balances sake. I mean just like in the episode you literally have to kill each other to stop possesion unless you have a cleric around. So you party is just screwed without one. Then how are you supposed to fight the big boss having most of your spells/abilities drained having to deal with possesion?
Odds are, unless your campaign has a very specific theme, you run into at most one vampire/one clan of them per campaign. Since the world is presumably not ruled by vampires when you start, they seem to be a rare enough occurrence.
That is something I wondered with clerics And necromancers being able to raise dead to undead. If I knew it was possible all corpses would be mandatory to burn to a god of light and fire.
@@melissawardjohns220 If the person that died didn't want to be burned, it could be considered disrespectful to still do it, but, yeah, it should be the opposite of what we have IRL(burning is standard, other stuff, including burials, are the exception).
I was super surprised to see him pull out three extremely lethal creatures without having a cleric around. I actually thought it was three banshees for a brief moment and REALLY was concerned.

@@ianglotfelty3639 Would have been funny but I'll take the way they restructured the entire fight over that one joke, Vax running in solo and needing to be rescued twice within a couple episodes would have felt like bad writing more than anything else.
Every time I reminded myself that everyone looked like Percy and Cassandra during that ghost fight I burst out laughing, like at 1:54:22 , Percy basically gets charged at by a larger version of himself that says "Percyyy".
The dice gods even reached down TWICE to tell them to stop messing with the rolls. The one keyleth rolled and two 20s on the new die. The dice tell the tale, and this is Percy's story
56:44 We see Laura asking Liam about his throat, and he shrugs it off saying he'll be better next week and jokes that now his voice is deep enough to do a Grog impression. Like a minute later all the guys are impersonating Vax which sets up Vax impersonating Grog and guys I flipping love these people and this story it's all too perfect.
1:36:40 Matt: You are being attacked and stabbed by yourself. It's weird Tal: I'm not reading too much into this. This is not a metaphor! Marisha: dies
I love that Matt gave them the opportunity for a short rest while Cassandra was getting her things. I love that he doesn' t play DnD as DM vs. Players, it's a story they're telling together and he wants it to be as good as it can be.
Jack Shade then he sends in three ghosts that completely deplete all their abilities right before the boss fight. Yeah, sure he doesn’t play dm-v-players...
@@clayxros576 Yeah, he realized it was way harder than he intended and started making up things to let it be easier, like Pike's intervention and allowing the spirit guardians to damage ghosts while they're possessing someone. To be fair, the fight would have been much easier if they hadn't failed every single one of their saves against possession.
Percy is literally the Anti-Wheaton. They both exist as entities only for the sake of the other's existence. They are literally yin and yang, positive and negative. I am gonna call it that when one of them dies (Either of old age, or otherwise), the other will die on the same day. Simply because one cannot exist without the other to balance them out.
Laura: "We really need a cleric." And then she played a cleric next campaign... Who became notorious for never healing her allies. Thank Melora for Caduceus!
Funny thing, she was going to play Warlock but Travis wanted to also so she took Cleric, and it all worked out beautifully in campaign anyway forJesters personality believing in her God
I did some calculations, and seven natural twenties, rolling that frequently, would amount to a 0.05% possible chance of it occurring. Congratulations, you've official earned the title of Nega-Wheaton.
I mean he makes 3 rolls an attack initiative saves with advantage skill checks. The. Add in that's 7 on 1 of them but it would be just as impressive if it was on nay of them so do that math foe each player. Then we are impressed this game but this is episode 33 so add in those odds for every roll up to date It's super impressive and tal for hundreds of episodes keeps up the anti wheaton I just don't thin .05% really is a fair assessment when your actually count the real rolls
WOW! Sam just continues to astound me with his ideas. No DM, no matter how many unholy pacts they may have made, can hope to match that sort of unexpected out of the box thinking, and you can *see* it on Matt's face, too.
Every DM has had their fair share.. I've had a wizard use polymorph to put out a town on fire by turning into a giant, and emptying their bladder. I've had a barbarian jump on top a boulder and "lumberjack run" it down a mountain so they could get enough speed to jump a ravine and get a "strike" on the orc formation on the other side (the party now calls the move Orc Bowling). I've even had a goblin druid talk an elder Red Dragon into sticking it's head into a tiny tunnel by swearing the dragon could fit and once stuck, insulting it so bad the angry dragon brought the mountain down on itself
@@azarinevil or once a halflimg druid we had on the team did an antman by turning into a fly and flew into an enemy npc's nose and proceeded to rip their face apart by then wild forming into a bear Most bat shit crazy/awesome thing I've ever seen
I love how Matt does things. 1:22:00 ish, he saw the 3 ghosts all taking over the players was a shit situation. And reading this, he took something heavily in character - Vax embracing religion somewhat following Pike, him having put time into it, and rewarded it by giving a chance to shake the ghost and help rebalance the odds in a very in-character, balanced, flavorful way. It didn't feel like an "Oh shit I gotta fix this" thing, but natural, one of those situations where the DM bending the rules is nice.
And he also rewarded Scanlan use of Spirit Guardian by homeruling posession like the ghosts were also taking damages as long as radiant damages were used. It works thematically and doesn't punish Sam for "wasting" a precious scroll because he couldn't have known better.
I always try to keep in mind that when I'm running a game I'm there to entertain the players and let them have fun. Sure my party running into a Zombie T-Rex in the jungles of Chult could be a regular combat where they get torn to shreds in like 4 rounds OR I can let them make perception checks and notice the loose rocks barely held in place by gnarled vines growing out of the cliff face. Technically it would take crazy good luck and the Zombie T-Rex not being resistant to bludgeoning damage to bury it and win but hey it makes for a cool moment and everyone has a great time. Besides I can always have it dig it's way out...
@@iank472 Yup, a good DM knows when to put a wall against their player, and when to let that wall crumble. Sometimes, it's funnier for everyone to play loose with the rules.
All of the above and this is being streamed, there has to be some level of entertainment value to keep people watching. You can't let rules (or dice roles) ruin a good plot in these cases. Plus, it's a game and why have rules if they're not mean to be broken?
4:13 The reaction by Marisha and how flustered she gets when Liam as Vex confesses his love to Keyleth is fantastic. Re-watching C1 and seeing the start of the Keyleth/Vax relationship is still just as adorable as it was the first time. What a moment.

1:59:57 Is the best part "You're not even corporeal! You have no substance! You're a nothin!" hahaha I love Scanlan. Favorite character for sure. How many kills has Scanlan gotten now just using cutting words? He's shamed like 4 things to death so far.
I love how Matt can take a ridiculous "how do you wanna do this" directive like a ghost crying from being viciously mocked to death (again) and turn it into something where _you're_ the one who almost feels like tearing up. A ghost recovering its senses -- its awareness of who it is and was -- and in that moment realizing that it has done something horrible that it can never forgive itself for. It's also great foreshadowing for events that are to come. I think this is one of my favorite smaller moments in the Briarwoods arc -- both when I first went through the episodes and on rewatch.
Watching in 2022 is such a different experience than the original critters. I've watched almost 10 months of videos in a little over a week and actually watched the show before any of the campaigns. It makes me so happy to know I have hundreds of hours of Critical Role left to enjoy.
It's really an embarrassment of riches! The one-shots are (very nearly all) fantastic too, and they did a slew of "Everything Is Content" experimental stuff at one point that was highly entertaining. (The most recent one with the VR headsets is NOT representative.) And then there's Sam and Liam's bromance podcast (All Work No Play), and at some point you will probably fall in love with some of their guests or the cast's appearances on other game streams which leads to going and finding more of those people's content, and soon enough you'll be digging through old Geek & Sundry content like that time they all failed hilariously at a For Honor beta, or the pajama card parties, or the Sagas of Sundry jenga-pull-based horror miniseries... Once you're hooked on this stuff & these people it kind of never ends, in the best way XD

An accurate description for chaotic good lol
@@OmniValor never before, have I heard something I took _SO personally,_ SO offensive, and _ONE-HUNDRED percent AGREE with_
I've always been partial to good adjacent when describing my chaotic good alignment.

Good players take notes!
I love how this trait of hers really shows well in campaign 2! I love it when people observe and write down anything that could be important (and it usually later on is), so I'm super happy when I see Marisha catch onto things and clues very quickly!
She should study her spells
Every time I see comments of her note taking I get reminded of campaign 2 where she basically solved the whole campaign.
Don’t watch it if you haven’t finished c2 but theres a video called ‘Marisha is proficient in note taking” and it shows clips of the things she’s referencing. Its insane.

Scarlett Kara lol u didn’t realize before
@@impastabowl2328 Not from my first watch through.
If you mean the people in comments, then my previous long post can be ignored.
well it's keyleth who is being weird but that's BC her character is that way
Well you see actors play romantic roles in every fucking movie, this is no diffrent. They are RPGing, they are making a store, just like any other book, movie or play.
To be fair, I'm pretty sure a lot of that was Marisha being legit flustered at this new development she wasn't prepared for. Her boyfriend and Sam teasing her didn't help.
+Jonathan Bethea I'm sure there was some background oks before it went ahead too.

1:57:06 That feel when you realise that if Percy had failed that first death saving throw, he would've been DEAD. Just imagine, Percy dead before facing the Briarwoods. That would've been horrible.
I seriously doubt Mercer would have struck Percy and take out two death saving throws had he failed it.
You never know. He tries to be as fair as possible, and the party has come VERY close to death several times already, like Vax against Anders, and in the Underdark escape Pike came one roll away from having her brain eaten by a Mindflayer. (Which I'm guessing would've made resurrection extremely difficult)
BigKlingy
Yeah, I realize that.
Percy just saying no to Cass and Scanlan's interaction is just amazing and never fails to make me laugh.
“It’s a series of words that I know individually but he strings them together in ways that don’t make sense.” I love Tahliesin
I am thinking that Whitestone will resort to burning their dead instead of burying them as a custom for a really long time to come.
I wonder why every D&D community doesn't do this as standard practice.
I know that if undeath were a thing in real life then cremation would likely be mandated by law.
That awkward moment when all 3 players fail their charisma saving throws and the DM has to intervene to stop it from being a massacre.

To be fair, the fight would have been much easier if they hadn't failed every single one of their saves against possession.
@@ultrawaffle Taliesin was draining all of their luck from their dice.
Either that or the universe will fall into chaos
luck cannot be created nor destroyed only transferred from one holder to another.

Or they are both immortal eldridge beings

But Vax, what about Gilmore and his glorious goods?
Goblinfoo Vax wants to tap that tree rather than take Gilmore's staff if you catch my drift
Bongibot Nah man, the glorious Gilmore threeway is the only option.
I kinda want that. WE MUST WRITE THE FANFIC
Vax has two hands.
When you swing both ways don’t you get one of each?
I did some calculations, and seven natural twenties, rolling that frequently, would amount to a 0.05% possible chance of it occurring. Congratulations, you've official earned the title of Nega-Wheaton.

The. Add in that's 7 on 1 of them but it would be just as impressive if it was on nay of them so do that math foe each player.
Then we are impressed this game but this is episode 33 so add in those odds for every roll up to date
It's super impressive and tal for hundreds of episodes keeps up the anti wheaton I just don't thin .05% really is a fair assessment when your actually count the real rolls

Grudgingly, have an internet point.
Liam rolling sleight of hand to take the gun and smirking telling Sam “you go first” was just immaculate
57:17 I know he's hurting, but Liam's voice as Vax tries to get Kiki's attention absolutely MELTS ME
WOW! Sam just continues to astound me with his ideas. No DM, no matter how many unholy pacts they may have made, can hope to match that sort of unexpected out of the box thinking, and you can *see* it on Matt's face, too.
I don't think MrTingles meant to say that Sam somehow "bested" Matt - he just wanted to say that Sam can even impress Matt, who is an incredible GM.
@@azarinevil ORC BOWLING?! I love it!

"Abrasiveness is his most powerful weapon"
"You know I'm in love with you, right?"
Oh my god, that bomb drop right before break! I actually felt MYSELF blush!
@@bdletoast09 rule of cool wins 10 times outta 10 😀
All of the above and this is being streamed, there has to be some level of entertainment value to keep people watching. You can't let rules (or dice roles) ruin a good plot in these cases. Plus, it's a game and why have rules if they're not mean to be broken?
4:13 The reaction by Marisha and how flustered she gets when Liam as Vex confesses his love to Keyleth is fantastic. Re-watching C1 and seeing the start of the Keyleth/Vax relationship is still just as adorable as it was the first time. What a moment.
Is this the second time Scanlan has gotten, "How do you want to do this" by mocking them to death?
+UnNuclear Third if you count the dark dwarf he drowned
Third I think
Third.
Notice how every time he mocks someone, they die?
Definitely three.. A duergar guard, a lesser vampire, and this episode's victim. Starting to think Scanlan's making up for being bullied as a child.
Is Taliesin like the RNGesus or something? because 7 crit's is unheard of, not to mention when he reach out to "suck matts luck away" Matt ended up getting two natural twenties in a row.
+pixiedragon The Universe needs a way to balance out Wheaton rolls.
that it does, I fear the day those two are in the same room.
Have a friend we nicknamed Crit Joe. Because 80% of the time he rolls a Crit. Either a fail or success it's usually a Crit.
+pixiedragon RNGesus is the RNGoddess's child, RNGesus is a spoiled brat that likes to give good rolls when it doesnt matter but gleefully takes it away when it matters most, RNGoddess however grants good rolls when needed
+pixiedragon but... but... RNGesus has no power in real live. He holds the power over Digital Randomness.

"You're not even corporeal! You have no substance! You're a nothin!" hahaha I love Scanlan. Favorite character for sure. How many kills has Scanlan gotten now just using cutting words? He's shamed like 4 things to death so far.
When Keyleth cast cure wounds on Vax at the beginning Scanlan should have sang "Sexual Healing" for inspiration.
