The door is the worst enemy of all adventures. Ask any DM 😂, the worst is magic doors. (or was it Unlockable doors hmmm I forget, damm memory wipe spells)
Yeah, tho the original quote wasn't a counter spell. It was Bigby's hand, which he used to hold down an adult white dragon who was trying to fly. Even more badass (and he almost died right after, but still, he succeeded xD")
If I had a nickel for every time Laura bailey left an award show to play DND in critical role, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's strange that it's happened twice
Those award shows are boring anyway. Hell I Would use It as an excuse to get out Of doing boring events. Even if I didn't have a game to actually go to.
Ashley Judd apparently refused hosting the Oscars because University Of Kentucky Basketball (of which she is a huge fan) was the same night. Laura Bailey just took it to the next level.
I see the briarwoods went to the bond villain school of "Hope the hero dies in your really convoluted death machine, but don't stay to make sure it happens"
@Agent Smith Thats pretty much the exact same kind of excuse bond villains give; they have more pressing matters to tend to, as they believe the hero has no way of surviving
This is why you never really want to anger the DM.. we can make death traps that actually get the job done, we just don't. The world should be glad that we aren't super-villains.
Me, 2 years after this happened: YOU'RE RAGING, YOU CAN'T BE CHARMED, YOU'RE RAGING, YOU CAN'T BE CHARMED Travis: Wait...I'm raging, can I be charmed? Me: Oh good, he heard me.
When I first started watching I didn’t realize that while he makes certain he is comic relief, Sam is a much better player than I at first thought. Not sure if he changed or I just let the good moves be blocked by the humor but he is making “the most useless class and race combo” work.
@@stevenweller9413 Bards are far from useless. They may be one of the most powerful being one of the few classes that can dip both arcane and divine spells like they can.
@@jameshopkinsipg “most useless class and race combo”is a direct quote from Sam Reigel talking about what he asked Liam when making Scanlan. Bard is very subtle but extremely powerful class with a good player. I was honestly saying I misread how good Sam was playing it when I first started watching.
It makes me think of something Taliesin said in the Between The Sheets interview. They were talking about choices, and Brian asked if he regretted any choices he made and if he'd rather not made them, but Tal said 'at least they were choices. If you don't choose, you're just at the whims of circumstance.' Or something to that effect. Sounds like that philosophy was already in place here too, that choosing something bad is still preferable over choosing nothing if there aren't any good choices available.
I've been binging this series and it's actually incredible to see how Pike has gone from being Everyone's fave Gnome Friend to being almost the party's patron saint or something
Clerics are the moral center of the group.. they almost always bring out the best of everyone. Plus she managed to get two references to crit role written into Blindspot, so you are not wrong.. she gave them their first mainstream pop culture references ever.
My party only has 1 Cleric....and she's an NPC. The very instant our DM introduced her, it was unanimously agreed (unspoken might I add!) That she is protected from harm at all costs.
I was my party's cleric.i was the relectant healer as everyone kept dropping and not calling out for help. So I would start every battle yelling out "stand on your fuckin feet people." We also judged that it was time to nope out of a dragon fight by how low I had gotten.
even though I watch it after campaign 2 I'm still a bit nervous about in game events in Whitestone. Also knowing Ashley is here means that there will be some dreadful fights
I know this is an old comment, but as a new fan catching up between episodes of campaign 3, I really miss Ashley being a constant cast member. She brings so much joy to the table and, much like Vox Machina, the viewer can feel the difference when she isn't there.
Keyleth: Can I water-bend acid?? Grog: Not a lot of hydrogen or oxygen there... For a split second Grog was possessed by Percy's great granny the chemist and nobody even noticed his big brain moment.
The way (most) acids work is by punting off hydrogen atoms. So there are a lot of H and O in there. He may have been possessed, but in peak Grogg fashion his science was wrong. 😂
@@brownkidnumber2,Are there any other kind? Because this is fascinating. Like what kind of acid is used to melt metal the most efficiently. Or why isn't Glass reactive to most acids? Chemistry is a passion Of mind that I find fascinating. Also, my warlock is an alchemist, so this would really help with Explaining a lot of the chemical science b s that I get up to.
Actually, there would be a lot of both. HNO3 contains both hydrogen and oxygen H2SO4 too HCl or HF contain hydrogen at the very least (and water in case of aqueous solutions). Therefore Keyleth could certainly try and bend the acid without any trouble.
The quietest "How do you want to do this?" From Matt I've heard yet. No one really cheered... They all just looked at Tal... The gentle yet dramatic music played... Wow.
I thought she was gonna go Wizard of Oz "You scared of a little fire?" But then "you scared of a little.... gnome and druid?" Bless her. She's not my fave character, but man Marisha is a fun player to watch. She is all in all the time, and I love it so much!
I get it! that's why Matthew dropped them into Percy's backstory!!! for anyone who's seen Matthews DM tips at one point he pointed out that if a character wasnt quite into the game you should bring them into the spotlight and make them the important ones for a while help them get a bit more comfortable with being in the foreground, in the first arc I didn't even know Percy's name now he's my favorite character who's been fleshed out more than anyone as far as I've seen, Matt is the most incredible DM I've ever seen by far
You haven't met many gm's did you? Matt is very good, I'm not trying to claim otherwise, but that particular trick is par for the course - nothing Matt does on it's own is unique to him as a GM, he is good because he rarely screws up the narrative and has excellent "crowd control" skills. He weaves the narrative like a pro - but he doesn't use any dark magic unknown to other gm's to do that.
How is that relevant to my comment? And no, I am not as good of a GM as Matt is, not by any capacity. In fact, I'm watching those videos to steal his tricks, aside of them being a lot of fun. I'm just saying that he isn't re-discovering America, is all.
The OP is fair enough though. They said Matt is the most incredible DM that they have seen. As you say, he's not creating new ways of DMing, he's just employing the core tenants masterfully. As I'm sure many do. But Matt does have a stage to display these skills to a very wide audience. OP might not have met many good DMs. And Matt does weave all the skills together very smoothly.
"As you approach the summit of the Ziggurat are there any preparations you would like to take" Reaches into bag of holding and retrieves sunglasses, puts them on. Grog, " I would like to rage."
When Laura/Vex is making her death saving throws and Liam/Vax says "Pike, please help her" and there's just that break in his voice as he says please......well if that didn't shatter my heart.....
And me screaming (the audience too, I'd imagine) at them to just stabilize her for the time being since the orb shrinking obviously cast some kind of anti magic field at the surrounding area. Man, they really should have had an intervention episode so that Matt could properly explain to them how KO, death saves, and stabilization works...
@@doihavetobeg i do agree that they could probably be a little more informed about all that stuff but also i feel like the desperate attempts at doing whatever they could immediately think of to save vex feels lore accurate in a way too. they probably can't think straight in the moment (character wise) and hindsight is always gonna be 20/20
I'm where u were at now. All caught up on season 2 though. I assume you've seen all of s1. I had such a hard time keeping myself from watching The search for Grog
the last npc that betrayed them was literally a mind flayer. they should not have trust issues at this point, other than realizing they were idiots for trusting him in the first place.
It's so weird, keeping up with the Mighty Nein, and then coming back to this. The shifts in personas being portrayed, particularly with Travis, are very impressive. Almost like they're actors or something. XD
@@rainbowdash-eq9le The mighty nein's(C2) story is 20 years after the end of this one (if i recall correctly). There are no real spoilers in C2 for C1, atleast none i caught not having seen C1 before

Props to Liam for playing his charmed character with honesty and integrity and to Sam for NOT meta gaming when he could easily have done so on several occasions.
Yeah, unfortunately Laura and especially Marisha have their metagame moments. Not quite as bad or disruptive as Orion by a longshot. But still causes a sigh every now and again.
@@piranhaplantX You're not wrong but it is important to remember that this was a live show and in the excitement of the moment it's easy to see how they might forget what their characters do and don't know. The fact that the two of them are the worst of the group in terms of staying in character only compounds that. It may be frustrating to watch in hind-sight but it's not something I can fault them for either. I think the biggest difference between them and the other guy is that they don't really argue when they get called out for it...which I take to mean it was accidental.
@@piranhaplantX honestly I don't get why that small level of metagaming is a problem. It's bad when it's super obvious like you talking to ppl when you aren't around them or knowing what a monster is as a player but not as a character. But for small things like healing Cassandra immediately and wanting to sunbeam the mist (as a druid and they've been fighting vampires and undead this whole time) it's kinda just like bruh let it go.
Yeah agreed. Taliesin is usually great at it too that’s why the trying to not kill lady briarwood felt like a real disappointment, felt like he only did it cause of group input and wasn’t in character.
Wow, that is pretty cool. Especially when the shadow ends, and you see the light brown underneath, it tends to line up with the end of Travis's sleeve.
@@sparklysapphic2556 You just made me realize why I like subtitles so much! As someone with ADD it can be hard to try to concentrate on the plot and who's speaking and also understand the words being said but reading them is so much better
I'm hard of hearing and have a difficult time following if multiple people are talking so the subtitles have been amazing. It makes the experience so much more enjoyable because I barely miss a thing.
Man, Liam was so intense during this episode. When Vex was dying he was legitimately stressing out and I think even crying. Everyone else was still kinda fooling around but Liam was just in the moment. That was...intense

I love the new campaign and content but these older episodes where they are eating hot wings and fries while playing really makes it still feel like a home game, I feel like there has been a palpable increase in professionalism which I think may improve content but I hope this never ever feels like a job to them.
I think they've focused on streamlining gameplay for minimal distractions and maximum playtime. They do still eat on set, just not as much, like that time Laura ordered a huge box of donuts.
To be fair, it was the chat that was buying all the food for them. That probably doesn't happen anymore, so they only have small things like cookies and donuts ect.
I mean, they definitely still eat on set. During the dinner with Essek, Laura and Jester get very distracted by cookies that she then frisbees to her friends on the other side of the table. Though Matt can't eat and can still barely drink because he's busy running the thing.
[spoilers] I love how each time one of Vex/Vax has almost died (here and the Jenga debacle in Emon), their twin has immediately busted out an epic natural 20 (or two). The dice gods appreciate drama!

I love the dynamic improvisation and imagination of not only the game itself, but how these players meld as a group and play individually.
It's amazing to watch all the little ways Travis adds to Grog through subtle stuff like this. Outside of combat Grog can't contribute that much due to low Int (and Travis never metagaming with ideas waaay above Grog's Int) so Travis adds loads of fun, silly little things.
I am ALL about these sibling moments between Vax and Vex Like how when Vex dialed Vax pretending to panic, and despite the charm he had a moment where he just stopped (despite when Keyleth tried to dial him, he literally had no response. Really emphasizes how close these two are)
i'm confused. what are you trying to say? like i said in my original comment ' that's a ' that's my wife she's so pretty ' face. cause you know, Laura and Travis are married.
This conversation is funny since I see only your posts. That being said, I totally agree. He's got that "She really cleans up pretty" look on his face. :)
Shows that passion can imitate love. True love is moral and always good. Whereas passion can be found across all alignments and is a strong and compelling emotion. Compels others to feel it as well.
Having Vex in this much danger made me realize how much I love her character. Vax's frantic attempts to save his sister really got to me. Liam is so good at the emotional moments
Liam O'brien is what I strive to be as a DnD player with the emotion he brings to his characters, as well as the character flaws that he portrays in his characters. He is the definition of the player at a table that gives so much more then they take when the moment demands it.

I imagine that in the first days of plotting out the animated series version of this section there was a whiteboard with a list of ideas, and at the top of that list were the words, “No f***ing Seeming spell.” 😉
@@Sistertotherain9 So I’m saying this as someone who watched the show first and then started working my way through this: the show made the right call not including the Seeming. It makes for some fun gags in the game, but story-wise the show handled this climax much better.

@@SoyDrinker first of all matt is no god, no one is. 2, please look up the definition of a joke, and finally consider that even online you are talking to real people and there is no reason to be a sack off dog shit, geez kiddo
First time watcher and I completely agree! He highlighted their love since the very beginning in Emon, with the way they interact with each other and look after each other in battle. Even some NPCs said that their affection for one-another is their main driving force. I think giving such a humanizing trait to such cruel villains is brilliant storytelling. It pushes the narrative a bit into more of a gray moral area, especially with their ultimate goal being shrouded in mystery, and makes us feel for them even if we disagree with their actions. "I broke the world for us."
Even though that's hilarious, I think they might drop that part because it would take away from the dramatic effect and intensity of the acid scene and subsequent battle. It would be nice if they have it as a bit somewhere but have it get dispelled before things kick into gear.
Travis: “She’s still next to me?” Matt: “Yeah.” Travis: “I’m gonna’ turn her into apple sauce.” Taliesin: “Uhhhgghh” Travis: “Sorry. Not really though.”
Considering how often they all (Grog especially) are charmed, posessed, or otherwise controlled, they're pretty quick to murder any one else under the same condition.
@@captin3149 From Grog's perspective she could've just switched sides. There was no clear indication she was being controlled. They knew Vax got charmed because he's a PC, they had no way of knowing with her. I myself initially thought that the Briarwoods trapping VM in the acid pit was the last straw that broke the camel's back, and she could no longer hold onto whatever little hope she had left, submitting to their influence. Only when she froze in battle and later acted stunned and confused when Sylas died, I figured it's possible it was only a charm effect.
I love how Matt will say “that misses unfortunately” when someone rolls to low to hit, because he has proven time and time again it isn’t the DM against the players, it’s the players against their enemies and Matt is guiding them along that path. I have never seen someone DM a campaign so well.
I keep forgetting that Liam and Laura aren't actual siblings. Edit: LOL Liam flustering both Marisha and Matt in the span of like two episodes is my new favorite thing
That line broke my heart a bit. It was clear the whole time that they loved each other but I didn't expect the heart ache. Didn't think I'd feel for such dark enemies.

Thank you so much for these! I'm watching this after watching the animated series because I enjoy seeing what's different and what's not, so knowing where the key moments are is awesome and saves me a lot of time. :)
Just for anyone who's doing a rerun of the show: god Mercer showed his mercy at the 4:20:01 mark, triggering Pike to try magic for them to discover that there is anti-magic afoot, which in turn giving them a chance to save Vex in time. It's the little things, Matt. We know, you softy.
Less that and more that Pike couldn't see the map so she doesn't know where she is in relation to Vex so it's only fair that he give her some option when she's asking "Can I get to them?".
Wouldn't be the first time he pulled his punches. In the ghost fight, he basically gifted a Turn Undead on Vax. The half-orc fighter at Vasselheim didnt finish Grog on the 2nd fight. So on and so forth It's clear that he wants the story to flow, as opposed to always obey the dice or encounter. IMO its ok, as long as players themselves dont intentionally do stupid stuff that jeopardize the team with no benefit. Also, because the encounters are challenging, he keeps players on their toes so as to prevent them from getting cocky and incentivizing strategy or clever thinking
He's a story DM, so he's ok with a little bit of plot armour for the characters, the added element of the show being live also means the characters become as established and as entrenched in a story as a TV show or film and this far in a new character being rolled could be extremely jarring for some fans. But at the same he won't break the rules to save them as the reason there was no saving Mollymauk with plot armour was because there was no cleric, druid or any kind of healer who could possibly save him from Lorenzo and thus no one to ressurect him.

You know the funny thing is, if they kept expanding the tunnel underneath the sun tree in trying to find a way to heal it or purge the corruption, they could have skipped right to the ziggurat (The thing corrupting the sun tree) and foiled the Briarwoods plan.
I wonder what might have happened if Pike cast her "Hallow/Hallowed(?)" spell near the sun tree. She mentioned it many episodes back when they were going to try and find safe camping grounds or something, but iirc it sounded like it would purify/consecrate the area around it for like a month or something crazy. I've no idea if it would do anything (first time watcher) but I kind of wish she'd been able to cast it. Maybe it would have hampered the Briarwoods or cleared some of their zombie giants and vampires out.
I'm sad they didn't look for the roots of the Sun Tree down here, when they were so focused on it being corrupted by the land (and then the ziggurat) earlier. Suppose my expectations were too high after watching the show, but maybe they find another way to heal it in canon.
@@tiril6681 Keyleth did look for the roots briefly but she rolled low on Perception in the darkness of the cavern (or possibly the roots don't reach quite this low)
Sam, Liam and Laura (and kinda Travis) are the only reason why I've made it in so far. They actually make the game fun. Percy and Keyleth try wayyyyyy too hard at making their storylines dramatic at every moment.
I only watch for hes shenanigans, after Orion left they have clearly lost the brains of the group, its like watching a bunch of chickens running around with their heads cut off.
ngl I've had a slight urge to make a red dragonborn sorcerer in BG3 specifically so I can waste every turn casting telekinesis and then quicken spell to cast it again for no apparent rational reason. only problem is that game actually counts your spellslots. maybe I'd need a mod that gives you infinite spell slots and sorcery points to truly represent the experience...
"This is why you read your abilities, I don't remember EVERYTHING!" an excellent thing to note down, and honestly I think that makes Game Masters all the better when they don't remember every skill their party has. This way hostile npcs can be genuinely surprised by charm effects failing or their spells fizzling out.
@@TheMeiliken cheating is a hard accusation, got any examples perhaps? And aren't DM's kind of supposed to metagame since the party having any challenge relies on their shoulders alone? I mean I'd get if he had direct counters to the party all the time but he barely has them ever
Not an accusation. A statement of fact. Really watch what he does, how he acts, how inconsistent he is. Then also read all of the actual d&d books, not his created 3rd party Taldorei system. You'll then see how he cheats. I'm not going to hand hold people through it.
@@TheMeiliken without proof it's not a statement of fact, and the accuser is responsible of providing said facts. I wouldn't consider homebrewed rules to be cheating at all, the fact that they use a homebrewed version of 5e in itself makes it pretty much impossible to know for certain what actions follow those rules and what don't. In addition to the actual rules also stating that the DM always has the final say no matter what RAW is.
Go ahead and look through all the videos. I've called out the cheating on multiple times as well as others have. It's not a claim. It's been proven many times. I'm not making a claim.

Maybe because a cleric in an undead campaign is basically godmode.
Clerics are the moral center of the group.. they almost always bring out the best of everyone. Plus she managed to get two references to crit role written into Blindspot, so you are not wrong.. she gave them their first mainstream pop culture references ever.
Welcome to high level Clerics *finger guns*
My party only has 1 Cleric....and she's an NPC. The very instant our DM introduced her, it was unanimously agreed (unspoken might I add!) That she is protected from harm at all costs.
I was my party's cleric.i was the relectant healer as everyone kept dropping and not calling out for help. So I would start every battle yelling out "stand on your fuckin feet people." We also judged that it was time to nope out of a dragon fight by how low I had gotten.

In another life he was clearly a master alchemist and would know lots about chemical makeup
The way (most) acids work is by punting off hydrogen atoms. So there are a lot of H and O in there. He may have been possessed, but in peak Grogg fashion his science was wrong. 😂

I get it! that's why Matthew dropped them into Percy's backstory!!! for anyone who's seen Matthews DM tips at one point he pointed out that if a character wasnt quite into the game you should bring them into the spotlight and make them the important ones for a while help them get a bit more comfortable with being in the foreground, in the first arc I didn't even know Percy's name now he's my favorite character who's been fleshed out more than anyone as far as I've seen, Matt is the most incredible DM I've ever seen by far
Jakub Janicki Matt being one of the greats doesn’t make you any worse, he’s just on camera. I’m sure you’re just as superb.
Now that I re-read my initial comment, it does sound much more abrasive than intended - I meant it as a rhetorical question, not a diss.

Scanlan’s “what was thaaat?” After Keyleth says she can’t lose Vax is legitimately the funniest thing.
I feel like I am learning from the whole group, especially the Mercer.
Daniel Boatright also the camera doesn’t focus on the table as much in the second campaign so they can hide sweets more easily
To be fair, it was the chat that was buying all the food for them. That probably doesn't happen anymore, so they only have small things like cookies and donuts ect.

It's amazing to watch all the little ways Travis adds to Grog through subtle stuff like this. Outside of combat Grog can't contribute that much due to low Int (and Travis never metagaming with ideas waaay above Grog's Int) so Travis adds loads of fun, silly little things.
Even with nobody else paying attention he was still roleplaying. Awesome dude
I am ALL about these sibling moments between Vax and Vex

I may be in the minority, but I really freaking hope so. Maybe for a gag, even up to the crypt fight, but not for the climactic battle.
@@Sistertotherain9 So I’m saying this as someone who watched the show first and then started working my way through this: the show made the right call not including the Seeming. It makes for some fun gags in the game, but story-wise the show handled this climax much better.

Here's the brilliance of Mercer. I was joyful when Sylas got his. But when Delilah reacted, my heart actually broke for her. That's acting, folks.

So on and so forth
It's clear that he wants the story to flow, as opposed to always obey the dice or encounter. IMO its ok, as long as players themselves dont intentionally do stupid stuff that jeopardize the team with no benefit. Also, because the encounters are challenging, he keeps players on their toes so as to prevent them from getting cocky and incentivizing strategy or clever thinking
@@mrcopycat2355 so Keyleth in the Kraken fight

Not an accusation. A statement of fact. Really watch what he does, how he acts, how inconsistent he is. Then also read all of the actual d&d books, not his created 3rd party Taldorei system. You'll then see how he cheats. I'm not going to hand hold people through it.
