  • Let's use Fusion 360 CAM to show four different 3D surfacing toolpaths! When Amish Solanki from SSCAD CAM wanted to hide an ugly door chime, we thought his idea was awesome. So, we decided to machine the same piece to get an in-depth look at different surface finishes. Let's walk step-by-step through the settings in Fusion 360 to create 4 different finishes that can make your parts look great. From faux knurling to radial toolpaths, we've got you covered!

    Cool test piece. I recently used the radial and spiral paths for a similar texturing step. The info about how to implement the tool paths is really helpful, but you need to devote more time to showing the results off. Watching this video I'd have a hard time seeing how each facet of the test piece came out since you only show the final surfaces for a second or two. Moreover, it would help to see from multiple angles and with a few different lighting setups.

    Boom! avoid surfaces selection. I was playing with rest machining but still got occasional air cut. thanks for the tip

    do yourself a favour, look up Drummond Masterton's Thesis, he did a whole Masters on just surfacing as an aesthetic tool. the work he produced was incredible

    Very nice! In future, could you add feeds in metric units? It would be very, very helpful Thanks in advance :)

      @@spikeypineapple552 No we are missing cutting feed rate to complete the formula. Normally I do not mind the thou and inch thing on american channels. With Fusion 360 videos I have to put the thing on pause constantly, so I can multiply everything by 25.4 (usually just by approximation by mentally multiplying by 2 and 3 and thinking ok, 10 times halfway between that). This is because Fusion 360 has the same settings pages in metric for us metric guys, so you really have no idea what 2 thou per tooth is compared to your own tool paths.
      Cutting feed rate of 30 inch/min equals 762 mm/min. I can relate to 762 because that is what I see in my version of Fusion 360. It is about half of max speed of my machine :-)

      @@BaldurNorddahl why is your machine so slow?

    • @urgamecshk
      @urgamecshk 5 лет назад

      @@BaldurNorddahl if you have rpm and feed per tooth you're all set....

    • @BaldurNorddahl
      @BaldurNorddahl 5 лет назад

      @@urgamecshk one can be calculated from the other, but they are both important. If he exceeds 1500 mm/min feed rate my machine will not be able to deliver the requested feed per tooth.
      As to why my machine is slow and weak, it is just a smaller machine. If you have the optimal feed and speeds for the HAAS this Tormach will not be able to keep up either.
      For one thing, the recommended depth of cut for that tool is twice the diameter but he is only doing one diameter. I assume that the machine is either not strong enough or not rigid enough.

    Do you do anything special to calculate the step over for the knurling? If you were using a different sized ball end mill for example.

    • @alexpinson3739
      @alexpinson3739 5 лет назад +1

      It all depends on how much stock to leave you have on the roughing op, as well as the diameter like you said. I don't calculate it so much as just watching the simulation to see if it creates the pattern I like

    • @AlistairPhillipsFolders
      @AlistairPhillipsFolders 5 лет назад

      @@alexpinson3739 Awesome cheers.. I hadn't really thought about the depth/remaining stock influencing the pattern.

    I'm a bit surprised you aren't using a v cutter for the pseudo-knurling.

    • @pprotory

      My thoughts as well. I also prefer 3 flute bull nose compared to ball for 3d contouring (extra rigidity)but I can see where that might be problematic given the geometry.

    I havent used any autodesk programs since we had 8088 computers and digitizers . lol . Thats a cool deal to have access to great software for 500 bucks a year , if I read correctly . My question is how much is available for that 500 a year since to get anything like mastercam or gibbs cost $17k+ ? Gibbs has been around for years and the learning aids you have on mastercam are just not there for gibbs . Are they there for Fusion360? I got great support for mastercam through cam-instructor in Oregon . Also nice project there to learn different tool paths

    1-1.5 diameter depth of cut and 10-15% radial cut is much easier on all things involved.

      ROFL because 1080p is so low res.... More than likely any issues you have seeing the detail is due to the device or connection you are watching their videos on. I could see it being an issue if it were filmed in low res but the detail looks just fine on 720p and 1080p playback.
